INDIANS COMPLETE 2013 FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT CLEVELAND, OH - Information on Cleveland Indians 2013 First-Year Player Draft selections, rounds 1 thru 10. *Signed 6/15 Round 1 (#5 overall) OF CLINT FRAZIER AGE/DOB: 18, September 6, 1994 High School: Loganville HS (GA) BATS/THROWS: R/R HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-11/185 Prep outfielder, recently graduated from Loganville High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he batted .485 in his senior campaign (47-for-97) with 17 homers, 45 RBI, 56 runs scored, a .561 on-base pct. and a 1.134 slugging pct. in 32 games. Following the season, the 5’11” right-handed hitter was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. He has a verbal commit to attend the University of Georgia and is the first overall high school position player selected in the 2013 draft. From MLB.com on Frazier Comments: Everything you say about Austin Meadows, you can say about Frazier, except for one thing: his size. Frazier doesn't "look the part" quite as much, but he still has just as many tools as his fellow Georgia prepster. A right-handed hitter, Frazier ran a 6.6 second 60 at the East Coast Pro Showcase over the summer. He also might have a more advanced bat than most of the high schoolers in the class, with a quick, short stroke that generates more power than you might expect given his frame. The lack of physicality might concern some, but his collection of tools should keep him high on Draft boards all spring. Like Meadows, Frazier made the rounds this past summer and played well. That continued into the spring, including a two-homer game when he faced off against his Georgia contemporary. Meadows might have the higher upside, but some scouts said watching Frazier was like evaluating a college hitter because of his "now" tools. *Signed 6/21 Round 3 (#79 overall) RHP DACE KIME AGE/DOB: 21, March 6, 1992 College: University of Louisville BATS/THROWS: R/R HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-5/220 Kime, 21, is 6-1 with a 2.99 ERA in 27 games/8 starts this year for the University of Louisville (69.1IP, 64H, 23ER, 20BB, 83K, 1HR, .250AVG).Kime began the season in the bullpen before entering the starting rotation mid-year and had a three start stretch from April 30-May 12 where he had a 0.96 ERA over 18.2 innings (3-0, 2ER, 25K). He has recorded 150 strikeouts in 136.0 innings during his 3-year Louisville career (10SO/9.0IP).Dace was previously selected in the eighth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates after earning All-American, All-State and All-League honors during his career at Defiance (OH) High School. As a senior, he was 7-1 on the mound with a 1.31 ERA and 108 strikeouts after being named a Preseason Louisville Slugger All-American…Ranked #91 according to Baseball America among amateur players entering the 2013 draft. From MLB.com on Kime Comments: The Pirates drafted Kime out of Definance (Ohio) High School, also the alma mater of Chad Billingsley and Jon Niese, in 2010, but he chose to attend college instead of sign. Kime, a right-handed pitcher, spent much of his career at Louisville as a reliever, but was moved into the rotation in late April. Scouts believe he has the potential to remain a starter as a professional. His fastball sits in the low- to mid-90s and he mixes it with a curveball, cutter and changeup. Kime uses his 6-foot-5, 219-pound frame to get a good downhill angle and creates a lot of groundballs as a result. *Signed 6/22 Round 4 (#111 overall) LHP KYLE CROCKETT AGE/DOB: 21, December 15, 1991 College: University of Virginia BATS/THROWS: L/L HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2/170 The Poquoson, VA native is 4-1 with 12 saves and a 1.68ERA in 28 relief outings this year for the Cavaliers (53.2IP, 39H, 10ER, 6BB, 68K). In his 3-year career at UVa he is 12-3 w/a 1.98 ERA in 87 games (145.2IP, 110H, 32ER, 27BB, 157K). He has a collegiate walk to strikeout ratio of 5.8, including just 6 walks and 68 strikeouts in 53.2 innings during his junior year. The 6-2, 170-pound lefty was the 2010 Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year and a two-time State Player of the Year (2009, 2010) at Poquoson High School… Ranked #103 according to Baseball America among amateur players entering the 2013 draft From MLB.com on Crockett Comments: Crockett has been a mainstay of Virginia's bullpen for three years. This year he moved into the closer's role, where he excelled. Crockett increased his velocity this spring and his fastball now is clocked in the low-90s. Hitters find his sweeping slider hard to lay off of. But Crockett's best asset is his excellent command. He didn't issue his first unintentional walk this year until May 12, 39 innings into the season. Crockett's deceptive, low-three-quarters delivery makes him tough on left-handers. He has a steady demeanor on the mound and could quickly pitch his way to the Major Leagues. *Signed 6/19 Round 5 (#141 overall) LHP SEAN BRADY AGE/DOB: 19, June 9, 1994 High School: Ida S Baker HS (FL) BATS/THROWS: L/L HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-10/180 The 6’1”, 185-pound lefty went 7-1 w/a 0.68 ERA (51.2IP, 104K) for the District 6A-13 runner-up Ida Baker Bulldogs. The 19-year old University of Florida commit was recently named the Fort Myers News-Press All-Area Baseball Player of the Year in addition to being named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association District 18 Most Valuable Player. From MLB.com on Brady Comments: Brady, a left-hander out of Baker H.S. (Fla.), is among the top Florida high school pitchers in this year's Draft class. He is polished for a high schooler and has the potential for three Major League-average pitches. Brady's fastball sits in the upper-80s to low-90s. He mixes it with a curveball and changeup, both of which are promising. He has a clean delivery and has a good feel for his whole arsenal. Brady turns 19 the day after the conclusion of the Draft, meaning he will be eligible again in two years if he chooses to uphold his commitment and play for Florida. *Signed 6/14 Round 6 (#171 overall) RHP CASEY SHANE AGE/DOB: 17, August 23, 1995 High School: Centennial(TX) BATS/THROWS: R/R HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-4/220 The 6'4', 200-pound right-hander went 5-2 with a 1.60 ERA (9ER/39.1 IP) with 77 strikeouts as opposed to just 8 walks for the 2013 Centennial Spartans. He held opposing batters to a .143 average against and a .205 OBP. Shane, 17, did not allow a single home run in 39.1 innings as a senior. The Texas A&M commit was recently named to the Rawlings All-American First Team. From MLB.com on Shane Comments: One of the youngest players in this draft class, Shane, a right-hander, won't turn 18 until August. Still, he has shown an advanced feel for pitching at Centennial High School. Shane's fastball sits in the low-90s with heavy sink. His 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame allows him to throw from a good downward plane. Shane also throws a biting slider and good changeup. All three of his pitches have a chance to be at least Major League- average offerings. He isn't afraid to come after hitters with any of his three pitches, but he relies heavily on his fastball. Shane is committed to Texas A&M. *Signed 6/21 Round 7 (#201 overall) LHP KENNY MATHEWS AGE/DOB: 19, August 6, 1993 College: Riverside City College (CA) BATS/THROWS: L/L HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-3/200 The 6'3', 200-pound lefty began his college career at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Riverside City College prior to his senior season. Mathews, 19, appeared in 12 games/9 starts for the Riverside Tigers going 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA (8 ER/58.1 IP) with 52 strikeouts compared to just 2 walks. He limited opposing batters to a .228 average against and allowed just 8 extra base hits. Mathews, went 5-4 with a 1.24 ERA (80 SO, 7 BB) in 62.0 innings as a senior at Diamond Bar High School and was selected in the 12th round of the First-Year-Player Draft in 2011 by the New York Mets. From MLB.com on Matthews Comments: Mathews began his college career at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Riverside City College this year. Despite lacking premium velocity, he succeeded at both Fullerton and Riverside. Mathews’ fastball sits in the mid-80s and occasionally touches 89 mph. But his ability to command his fastball allows him to compete without better velocity. Mathews also throws a curveball and a changeup. He can locate his offspeed pitches as well as his fastball, and he earns high marks for his pitchability. Mathews is listed at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds and has proven to be a workhorse, pitching in the rotation and out of the bullpen this season. *Signed 6/12 Round 8 (#231 overall) RHP TREVOR FRANK AGE/DOB: 21, June 23, 1991 College: University of California Riverside BATS/THROWS: R/R HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-0/195 The senior, 6’0”, 195-pound right-handed pitcher went 4-2 with 10 saves and a 2.45ERA in 26 relief outings (44.0IP, 37H, 12ER, 9BB, 44K, .215AVG).
