2018 MEDIA GUIDE 14 2017 FISHER CATS NOTEBOOK

ALLENSON RETURNS: The 2017 Fisher Cats were managed by former and Toronto Blue Jays , who swapped posi ons within the organi- za on with . Meacham managed the Fisher Cats from 2014-2016. Allenson returned to New Hampshire where he was the skipper in the 2013 season, his fi rst season as a Manager in the Blue Jays organiza on. New Hampshire went 68-72 that year. As a player, Allenson appeared in 402 games with Boston from 1979-1984. His fi nal season as a player, 1985, included 62 games with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs and 14 games with the Blue Jays. He also coached for all or part of seven seasons in the Major Leagues with the Red Sox, Brewers and Orioles. TOP PROSPECTS PLAY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE: The Blue Jays sent many high-rated prospects to New Hampshire to start the season, genera ng a lot of pre-season excitement. While the team’s off ense showed steady improvement through the season despite not having a real threat, the young star ng staff struggled to fi nd the consis- tency needed to avoid the worst record in franchise history (59-80). That noted, there were solid performances from several pitchers and six players from the 2017 team made Major League debuts with the Blue Jays. (Anthony Alford, Richard Urena, Chris Rowley, Tim Mayza, Carlos Ramirez, and Luis Santos). ALL-STARS CONVERGE IN MANCHESTER: For the third me, New Hampshire hosted the Eastern League All-Stars on Wednesday July 12 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. An exci ng home run derby was won by Bowie’s Aderlin Rodriguez 14-13 in the fi nals over Erie’s Gabriel Quintana. The East scored seven mes in the sixth inning in a 7-1 win over the West. New Hampshire’s Gunnar Heidt drove in two runs with a double and Ryan McBroom of the Fisher Cats also knocked in a run before the home crowd of 6,012. WHO’S THE ACE?: Four pitchers were in the conversa on as being the “best” of 2017. Army veteran Chris Rowley started the season in the , but dominated when moved into the star ng rota on on May 20. He allowed three ER in 25.1 IP in his last four New Hampshire starts. Reliever Carlos Ramirez, while injured for a long stretch of the season, did not allow an in 18 games with New Hampshire while holding opponents to a .123 average. Southpaw Tim Mayza struggled at the start of the season, but pitched well enough in June to earn a Triple-A promo on, and eventually a job in the bullpen for the Blue Jays. Late in the season, southpaw Ryan Borucki was the best star ng . In his fi nal start with the Fisher Cats on August 26, he blanked Har ord over seven with seven . MOST IMPROVED PLAYERS: Richard Urena probably developed more than any player on the team. He con nued to show improvement defensively and has about the best range we’ve seen at shortstop. Off ensively, he was hi ng as low as .217 by late May, and fi nished at .247. His 36 doubles fell one short of the franchise record and indicate he may be developing a power stroke. In his fi rst season in the Blue Jays organiza on, Tim Lopes put together a solid season and could eventually fi nd his way onto a Major League roster. He fi nished with 50 RBI and stole 19 bases. With 111 hits and 69 walks, Jonathan Davis had a .361 OBP. He covers a lot of ground in centerfi eld and can move forward with a be er success rate stealing bases. DOUBLE-A FOR AA: Anthony Alford, injuries aside, had a terrifi c 2017 season.. In May, he became the fi rst posi on player in Fisher Cats history to be promoted from Double-A to the Majors. His .310 average with the Fisher Cats would have been .001 off the all- me best (he didn’t qualify on AB). Alford showed tremendous speed, almost leading the team in stolen bases (18 for 21), fi elded his posi on well, and had a .406 OBP.

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT, HERE AND IN TORONTO: , Jr. and Bo Biche e, two of Baseball America’s Top 10 prospects, will suit up for New Hampshire in 2018, along with an addi onal fi ve of the Top 30 prospects in the Blue Jays organiza on, and a total of six players taken in the fi rst fi ve rounds of the MLB Dra .

3B Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. enters the season as the highest-rated prospect in Fisher Cats history, ranked No. 3 in all of baseball by Baseball America and MLB.com. The 19-year-old made headlines on Tuesday, March 27, hi ng a walk-off home run in the Blue Jays fi nale at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, where his Hall of Fame father played for eight seasons. Guerrero, Jr. .323 with 21 home runs between Class-A Lansing and Advanced-A Dunedin last year, and was named the best hi ng prospect in baseball in the latest issue of Baseball America magazine. The Blue Jays signed Guerrero, Jr. for $3.9 million on July 2, 2015.

SS Bo Biche e is the No. 8 prospect in the game according to Baseball America, and won the 2017 Minor League Ba ng Title with a .362 average as a member of the Lansing Lugnuts and Dunedin Blue Jays. His father Dante Biche e spent 14 seasons in the major leagues (including two with the Boston Red Sox in 2000-2001), and hit .299 with 274 career home runs. The 20-year-old Biche e was taken in the second round of the 2016 Dra out of Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, Fla.

EASTERN LEAGUE NEWS: The 2017 Championship won by the Altoona Curve was the second in team history. Akron defeated Trenton for the tle a er dispatching Bowie in the Western Division Championship series. Trenton held off Binghamton in a ba le of the Eastern Division’s top two teams. ..A er years of delays, the Har ord Yard Goats opened 2017 in the beau ful Dunkin’ Donuts Park and averaged more than 5,800 per game. The team remained the Double-A affi liate for the Rockies...The Eastern League schedule, which had been at 142 games since the Fisher Cats joined in 2004, was been trimmed to 140 games for the 2017 season. Each team now plays 70 home games and 70 away. The playoff structure remains unchanged with the top two teams in each division playing each other in a best-of-fi ve series in advance of a best- of-fi ve Championship series. The Western Division will host Games 1 and 2 of the fi nals in 2018. There were no no-hi ers in the Eastern League in 2017.
