Office of the President Lee Landers 704-252-2656 759 182nd Avenue E. [email protected] Redington Shores, FL 33708 Dear Fans: Welcome back to the ballpark for another season of Appalachian League baseball. We are excited to have you join us for our 107th season of league play and our 61st season as an advanced rookie league. Through the support of fans like you, the Appy League has found continued success in Minor League Baseball, and we appreciation your dedication to the league and your favorite team, win or lose. A number of great players, including 2017 World Champions Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, potential Hall of Famers Joe Mauer and Yadier Molina, and top prospects Ronald Acuna, Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., have played in the Appalachian League. Like these players, those you’re seeing tonight will look back years from now and remember the time they spent in your ballpark and your community. Minor League Baseball is known for its affordable, family-fun entertainment, a standard we strive to maintain in the Appalachian League. Our front office staffs have worked diligently over the off season to ensure fans will have the best experience possible each time they walk through the gate at an Appy League ballpark. Be sure to keep an eye out for new promotions, concessions items, and ballpark offerings. And, of course, before you leave the ballpark, stop by the gift shop to pick up a few items to remember the time spent with your favorite team. The Appalachian League has continued to find success both on the field and off, as our clubs are involved in numerous local charities and fundraising initiatives. We value the opportunity to give back to the communities that support the Appy League through volunteerism, donations, and capital improvements to our ballparks and facilities. We applaud our clubs and the organizations they support for their commitment to be an integral part of the communities in which they play and operate. Equally important, we thank the businesses who partner with each team and encourage you to support these sponsors who help make our operations possible. Now sit back, grab a hot dog and a cold drink, and watch the stars of tomorrow play tonight. We thank you for your support of the Appalachian League and look forward to helping make your summer a great one. Sincerely, Lee Landers, President League History The Appalachian League was born in 1911 with teams in Asheville, N.C.; Bristol, Va.; Cleveland, Tenn.; Johnson City, Tenn.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Morristown, Tenn. That first version of the league lasted just four years, with the league disbanding in the middle of the 1914 season when Morristown and Mid- dlesboro, Ky., folded on June 17. The league reformed in 1921 with six teams: Bristol; Cleveland; Greeneville, Tenn.; Johnson City; Kingsport, Tenn.; and Knoxville. That incarnation of the league managed five seasons, before again closing up shop midway through 1925. In 1937, the league was restarted with teams in Elizabethton, Tenn.; Johnson City; Newport, Tenn.; and Pennington Gap, Va. During World War II, while most other minor leagues ceased operations, the Ap- palachian League played on. It continued right up until 1955. That year legendary minor league slugger Leo “Muscle” Shoals led the league with 33 homers and 134 RBIs in a 126-game season for Kingsport. It was the fifth Appalachian League home run title for Shoals, who had also led in 1939, 1946, 1947 and 1951. The modern Appalachian League began in 1957, its first year as a short-season league. Six teams played that year, in Bluefield, W.Va.; Johnson City; Kingsport; Pulaski, Va.; Salem, Va.; and Wytheville, Va. This record book focuses on the league since 1957. 4 • 2018 APPALACHIAN LEAGUE RECORD BOOK League Cities Asheville, N.C. 1911-12 Lynchburg, Va. 1959 Bluefield, W.Va. 1946-55, ‘57- Marion, Va. 1955, ‘65-76 Bristol, Va. 1911-13, ‘21-25, ‘40-55, Martinsville, Va. 1988-2003 ‘69- Middlesboro, Ky. 1913-14, ‘61-63 Burlington, N.C. 1986- Morristown, Tenn. 1911-14, ‘23-25,‘59-61 Cleveland, Tenn. 1911-13, ‘21-22 New River, Va. 1946-50 Covington, Va. 1966-76 Newport, Tenn. 1937-42 Danville, Va. 1993- Paintsville, Ky. 1978-84 Elizabethton, Tenn. 1937-42, ‘45-51, ‘74- Pennington Gap, Va. 1937-40 Erwin, Tenn. 1940, ‘43-44 Pikeville, Ky. 1982-84 Greeneville, Tenn. 1921-25, ‘38-42, 2004- Princeton, W.Va. 1988- Harlan, Ky. 1961-63, ‘65 Pulaski, Va. 1946-50, ‘52-55, ‘57-58, Harriman, Tenn. 1914 ‘69-77, ‘82-92, ‘97-06,‘08- Huntington, W.Va. 1990-95 Rome, Ga. 1913 Johnson City, Tenn. 1911-13, ‘21-24, ‘37-55, Salem, Va. 1955, 1957-67 ‘57-61, ‘64- Welch, W.Va. 1946-55 Kingsport, Tenn. 1921-25, ‘38-52, ‘57, ‘60- Wytheville, Va. 1953-55, ‘57-65, 63, ‘69-82, ‘84- ‘67, ‘69, ‘71-73, ‘85-89 Knoxville, Tenn. 1911-14, ‘21-24 League Presidents 1911 W.
