JAY STAYS HOT IN MAY--One of baseball’s hottest hitters in May, Jon Jay, was 1-for-4 yesterday and has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games at a .346 clip (18-for-52)...now a .291 hitter on the year, he has raised his season average 53 points since the month began by hitting .365 (27-for-74) in 18 games, which is the fourth best mark in the American League in May. WALK FREE ZONE--Kelvin Herrera recorded his ninth save in 10 tries with Friday night’s 1-2-3 ninth inning to lower his season ERA to 1.08 (2 earned runs in 16.2 innings)...he has yet to yield a walk thru his first 18 appearances of 2018, spanning 16.2 innings...it’s the second longest streak by a Royal to open the year, trailing Dan Quisenberry, who did not allow a free pass in his first 19 outings, spanning 37.2 innings in 1982. RUGGED RISP SERIES--Kansas City was just 3-for-24 (.125) with runners in scoring position against the Yankees, a stretch that included a 5-2 victory on Friday, with the club going 0-for-8 in RISP situations...including the last three games the Royals are still hitting .280 (44-for-157) with runners in scoring position over the last 19 games...KC was hitting a Major League low .175 in RISP situations after the first game of an April 28 split-doubleheader vs. the White Sox, but has upped that mark to .216 on the year, which is 27th in the Majors. 1,100 AND COUNTING--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost recorded his 1,100th career win with Friday night’s victory, good for sixth among active managers...he has a 643-664 regular season record at the helm for the Royals, surpassing Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is also sixth among active managers in games (2,266)...his postseason winning pct. of .710 (22-9) is tops among all managers in history who have worked at least 20 playoff games...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002). ROUGH NIGHT FOR REPLAY--Saturday night’s game featured three replay reviews and the Royals took it on the nose in all three, losing their own challenge of Mike Moustakas attempting to score in the fifth inning and then two by the Yankees that went their way...despite the “stands” call on Saturday, Kansas City replay review expert Bill Duplissea is still a big league best (tied with the Phillies) 11 for 13 this year for an 84.6% success rate...he has made good on 67% of his challenges in his career (110-for-164), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 71.6% success rate over the last three seasons (63-for-88). NOT JUST THE TEAM’S 50TH SEASON--One common denominator with the Royals and this 50th season of baseball in Kansas City is Hall of Fame announcer Denny Matthews, who was in the booth with Buddy Blattner on April 8, 1969 and is once again calling the play-by-play during this milestone season...the Ford Frick Award winner in Cooperstown, NY in 2007, Matthews has been the one constant since the franchise came to be in ‘69...with this his 50th season, he trails only Los Angeles Dodger broadcasting icons Vin Scully (67 years prior to retiring) and Jaime Jarrin (59th season). RULE 5 HURLERS ON ROSTER--The Royals are carrying a pair of Rule 5 acquisitions on the roster with right-handed hurlers Brad Keller and Burch Smith...Keller, 22, was selected in last December’s Rule 5 draft from Arizona by Cincinnati and then dealt to KC, while the 28-year old Smith was acquired from the after being selected in the draft...Keller spent the year in AA Jackson last year, while Smith has big league time with San Diego in 2013.
