Contribuþia înaintaºilor. Metodologia ºi izvoarele Actualitatea temei investigate ºi contribuþiile înaintaºilor. Realizãrile ºtiinþelor istorice, arhe- ologice ºi arhitecturale confirmã importanþa acestor obiective ca surse preþioase despre trecut. Ele contribuie la dezvoltatea gusturilor estetice ºi formarea universului emoþional uman. Printre comanditarii lor se numãrã Petru I Muºat, Roman I Muºat, Alexandru cel Bun, ªtefan cel Mare, Petru Rareº º.a. Primii le-au acor- dat atenþie cronicarii moldoveni Grigore Ureche1, Miron Costin2 ºi Ion Neculce3, precum ºi ilustrul cãrturar enciclopedist, domnitorul Moldovei, Dimitrie Cantemir4. Batiuºkov6 ºi articolele memb- rilor Societãþii Imperiale de Istorie ºi Antichitãþi din Odessa7 (A.L. Bertier-Delagarde, A.A. Ciobanu15, Gh.I. Brãtianu16, N. Bãnescu17, F. Hann18, O.G. Lecca19, A.D. Culea20, N. Grigo- raº21 º.a. Ionescu26, Gh. Curinschi27, V. Florea28, C.C. Giurescu29 º.a. Diaconu ºi N. Constantinescu despre cetatea ªcheia33, monogra- fia lui M.D. Matei ºi Em.I. Datoritã investigaþiilor acestui cercetãtor s-a schimbat esenþial imag- inea noastrã despre istoria ºi arheologia mai multor cetãþi medievale. Trebuie sã amintim aici ºi fundamentala monografie a lui T.O. O altã lucrare valoroasã a aceluiaºi cercetãtor urmãreºte specificul apãrãrii urbane medievale, inclusiv pe teritoriul Transilvaniei, Þãrii Româneºti ºi Moldovei38. Prezintã interes ºi cîteva articole cu acelaºi subiect publicate de T.O. Gheorghiu39. Gorovei41, A. Husar42, P. Diaconu43, O. Iliescu44, ªt. Andreescu45, I. Cândea46, A. Andronic47, Gh. Anghel48, A. Pippidi49, P.V. Bârnea ºi T.F. Reaboi53, V.A. Voiþehovski54, M. ªlapac55, T.Nesterov56 º.a. Smirnov57, G.F. Cebotaren- co58, I. Hâncu59, A. Eºanu ºi V. Eºanu60 º.a. Kravcenko66, B.A. Timoºciuk67, G.G. Mezenþeva68, A. Kuniþa69, I.G. Konovalova70 º.a. Logvin71, G.G. Mezenþeva ºi I.A. Ivanenko72 B. Kolosok73 º.a. Printre lucrãrile autorilor din Franþa, Germania, Italia, Bulgaria, Polonia ºi Turcia cele mai însemnate aparþin lui M. Balard74, M. Cazacu75, P. Nãsturel76, N. Beldiceanu77, G. AN ATTEMPT TO RECOVER THE PLANS OF THE CASTLE OF LIVERPOOL FROM AUTHENTIC RECORDS; CONSIDERED IN CONNEXION WITH MEDI/EVAL PRINCIPLES OF DEFENCE AND CON STRUCTION. By Edward W. Cox. (Read 6di November, 1890.) DESCRIPTION OF THE FEATURES AND BUILDINGS OF THE CASTLE. T TPON a rock}'knoll, washed by the Mersey on its V_J western side, and cut off from the mainland on the south and east by the tidal waters of the old Pool, forming the estuary of a small stream falling from the Moss Lake that lay in a fold of the Great Heath, at the foot of the hills which environ the town on the east, was built the Castle of Liverpool. The rocky platform on which it stood sloped westward towards the river, and was approached only from the north. About the centre of the promontory, and commanding its area and shores on every side, the castle was set on the highest point, and was defended by a ditch cut in the rock, varying from 30 to 40 feet in width, and from 24 to 30 feet in depth. Beyond this ditch to the northward, earth works were thrown across the peninsula, and from O 2 ig6 Liverpool Castle. notices in early records of the herbage on these defences, they seemed to have formed a line of outworks surrounding the castle. From the western side of the rock-cut ditch, which formed the castle's second line of defence, near the northern corner, an underground passage, ten feet high, was cut in the rock down to the shore of the Mersey, which still exists below the pave ment of James Street, and was seen by the writer when it was opened some thirty years since.

SLSA Jahresbericht 2009 Bhutan-Swiss archaeological excavation project 200 8–2010 Drapham Dzong, Bhutan. Report 2009 . Werner Meyer Introduction Silvia Scheuerer and Kuenga Wangmo In collaboration with Nagtsho Dorji and Sonam Tashi The Drapham Dzong is located in the Bumthang district in Central Bhutan on a moun - tain ledge in the Chamkhar Chhu valley (exact positio n: N27° 39 ' 15.4", E 90 º 45 ' 14.9", heigh t: approx. 2,930 m.a.s.l .). The elongated mountain ledge is steep on all sides and in places, the rock forms the foundation of the wall. An ancient valley path leads across the col, east of the fortress hill. The entire site is divided into two topographical parts – a mountain fortress and a projecting, fortified settlement in the south-east. The fortress consists of three layer s: a main and an upper castle, a lower castle, and advanced outer baileys situated in the north and the south. Two staircases fortified by towers connect the southern outer bailey with the valley settlement. The mountain fortress is 200 m long, measured along the longitudinal axis which approximately lies in the north-south direction. The archaeological excavation of Drapham Dzong is a major project, undertaken by the Ministry of Home and Culture Affairs of the Royal Government of Bhutan and Hel vetas Bhutan, in collaboration with the SLSA . It successfully began its first excava - tion in autumn 2008 under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Werner Meyer from the University of Basel. The compensation of salaries for the Basle team during the exca - vation period in 2009 was taken over by the Basle foundation FAG (Freiwillige Aka de - mi sche Gesellschaf t).

362 LEICESTERSHIRE ARCHITECTURAL SOCIETY. which it is conjectured, from the absence of metal tools, was worked previously to the Roman invasion. It contained chisels formed from bones, and stone hammers or pounders, varying in weight from one pound to fifty. The specimen now exhibited weighs lOtbs. 9oz. It is of a hard bluish stone, nine inches long, and is ornamented near the top and round the centre by rings of various widths encircling it. In the catalogue of the museum of Thomas Bateman, Esq., at Youlgrave, p. 26, a description is given of other articles from this old mine, of the discovery of which an account was published in the Gentleman's Magazine for December, 1849. MR. THOMPSON read the fpllowing paper upon the remains of THE CASTLE OF KIRBY MUXLOE. LEAVING the, town of Leicester by the Hinckley road, a pedestrian will walk about two miles before he will reach the gateway con ducting through the demesne of J. B. Winstanley, Esq., to Brauustone Hall. A few hundred yards further he will notice, on the right hand, a stile and gate. This is the commencement of the foot road to Kirby' Muxloe. Passing over the field, the pedes trian will find the path continues over the Leicester and Burton Railway, and beyond there, over five fields to Braunstone Frith— a substantial farmhouse built of brick. Here the footpath deviates a little to the left, to clear the house and buildings, and then it runs on again behind the house, either along a lane, or over a field by the side of the lane.
