In the late eighteenth century, pamphlets electrified the colonies and helped to forge American democracy, ringing the alarm for what was wrong and what needed to be done. Nunes warns that something needs to be done now before our country loses it morals and values. He writes, “The Left has wholly rejected the fundamental principles that bound Americans together and allowed us to work out our differences democratically and peacefully.” The Left now rejects free speech, a fair voting system, private property, and the rule of law. They don’t dare yet admit it publicly, but as you’ll see in this book, their policies and rhetoric are incompatible with any of these principles as we understand them today. *Adapted from an Elise Cooper book review in American Thinker December 19, 2020 Americanism Anna Mae Maly, Americanism Chair Visit us on the web at www.mrwf.org THE PRICE OF LIBERTY IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE—THOMAS JEFFERSON Page 3 Marin Republican Women, Federated Voter Registration February Volunteers Community Action Reports Our next Voter Registration effort will be in February 2021 CALLING YOU to join in. after things settle down. • Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths.

Rowland Date Approved: 5 September 7 2019 iii Abstract On February 19, 2009, CNBC journalist Rick Santelli’s fiery outburst against the Obama Administration on national television gave the Tea Party Movement (TPM) its namesake. Soon after rallies were organized across the U.S. under the Tea Party banner. From its inception in 2009, the TPM became an essential player in U.S. politics and pivotal in flipping control of the Senate and House to the Republican Party during the 2010 midterm elections. The movement faced controversy on both sides of the political spectrum for its beliefs and fervent stance against compromising with political adversaries. Researchers argued that the TPM was an example of Richard Hofstadter’s Paranoid Style. Others claimed that the movement’s rhetoric, member demographics, and political success demonstrated it was outside the boundaries of the Paranoid Style.

A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 1 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Alicia Wanless Michael Berk Director of Strategic Communications, Visiting Research Fellow, SecDev Foundation Centre for Cyber Security and International [email protected] Relations Studies, University of Florence [email protected] Paper presented at the "Social Media & Social Order, Culture Conflict 2.0" conference organized by Cultural Conflict 2.0 and sponsored by the Research Council of Norway on 1 December 2017, Oslo. To be published as part of the conference proceedings in 2018. A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 2 Abstract Existing research on aspects of propaganda in a digital age tend to focus on isolated techniques or phenomena, such as fake news, trolls, memes, or botnets. Providing invaluable insight on the evolving human-technology interaction in creating new formats of persuasive messaging, these studies lend to an enriched understanding of modern propaganda methods. At the same time, the true effects and magnitude of successful influencing of large audiences in the digital age can only be understood if target audiences are perceived not only as ‘objects’ of influence, but as ‘subjects’ of persuasive communications as well. Drawing from vast available research, as well as original social network and content analyses conducted during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, this paper presents a new, qualitatively enhanced, model of modern propaganda – “participatory propaganda” - and discusses its effects on modern democratic societies. Keywords: propaganda, Facebook, social network analysis, content analysis, politics A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 3 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Rapidly evolving information communications technologies (ICTs) have drastically altered the ways individuals engage in the public information domain, including news ways of becoming subjected to external influencing.

  • Textualization of Pat Tillman: Understanding the Relationships Between Person, Discourse, and Ideology
Abstract Title of dissertation: TEXTUALIZATION OF PAT TILLMAN: UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PERSON, DISCOURSE, AND IDEOLOGY Arthur W. Herbig, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Robert N. Gaines Department of Communication This project is a critical examination of the ways in which the life and death of Pat Tillman were shaped into a discursive Pat Tillman. This is not a project that examines the life led by the person Pat Tillman. The discursive Pat Tillman can be found in the pages of magazines, on television, invoked by politicians, and even memorialized in song. It is Pat Tillman, the discursive creation, that is my focus. In this project I take for granted that Pat Tillman only existed in places like the pages of books or on film. What is not lost on me and should not be lost on the reader of this project is my own participation in this process. With this project I have entered into the very discourses that I seek to critique. This is an analysis of the existence of a Pat Tillman that many people still know and the ideas that help shape how that existence is communicated. My critique focuses on the existence of a discursive Pat Tillman as a rhetorical phenomenon, drawing upon scholarship that can inform an understanding of how the life of Pat Tillman became the material for public discourse. My analysis interconnects Michel Foucault’s (1972) work on knowledge and discourse with Michael Calvin McGee (1990) referred to as rhetorical fragments, in order to provide a foundation for understanding the discursive existence of Pat Tillman.

  • Beating the Bushes
Beating the Bushes: All Politics, All The Time January 09, 2008 The Swift Boating of Barak Obama While hosting a dinner party at our home the other night, one of our guests -- a 30ish attorney with an MBA -- asked me out of the blue: "So what do you think about Osama?" Catching the devilish glint in his eye, and knowing of his penchant for being a contrarian, I quickly gleaned that he was referring not to Osama bin Laden, but rather to Barak Obama. Initially, I decided to play dumb: "I think he is a mass murderer masquerading as a Muslim Messiah." From the look on his face, I could tell he was disappointed that I hadn't taken the bait. "No, I'm talking about Osama, the guy running for president," he said somewhat churlishly. "First of all," I said, a bit heatedly, "his name is SENATOR Barak Hussein OBAMA, not OSAMA, and secondly, please don't tell me you're one of those unfortunate souls who've fallen for this barrel of b.s." "All I know is what I hear," he said, "and from what I've heard, this guy's bad news." The conversation didn't get much better. The only saving grace was that I knew he was living up to his contrarian self, and probably didn't really believe what he was saying. He was likely just trying to get a rise out of me. Nonetheless, it was terribly unsettling. The very next morning, I received an email from my assistant and man- of-all-work Art.
