Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths. -

Edgar' AP From left, Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer and director Clint Eastwood at the premiere of "J. Edgar" last week in Los Angeles (You can download an MP3 of this story at voaspecialenglish.com) DOUG JOHNSON: Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC in VOA Special English. (MUSIC) I’m Doug Johnson. Today we play music from American Idol winner Scotty McCreery ... And we answer a question about American whiskey ... But first, it is history at the movie theater where a new film opens about former law enforcement chief J. Edgar Hoover. "J. Edgar" DOUG JOHNSON: The movie "J. Edgar" opens across America today. The film is about J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hoover was a complex and powerful man. He helped develop the FBI into an efficient and effective crime solving agency. However, in later years, many people 2 questioned the methods used by Hoover and his investigators. Bob Doughty tells more about the man and the movie. BOB DOUGHTY: Clint Eastwood directed the movie "J. Edgar." He grew up in the time when, in his words, "Hoover was always top cop." Eastwood said he had heard different stories about the former FBI director. Some of them were very critical. But Eastwood said anybody who stays in a job as long as Hoover did is going to create some enemies. J. Edgar Hoover was the leader of the FBI and the agency it developed from for almost fifty years. -

Requiring Videotaped Interrogations Has Broad Support from Law
Requiring Videotaped Interrogations Has Broad Support From law enforcement: • "We don't object to any recordation of interviews or interrogations which would result in a clearer picture of what the defendant or the witness told the police officer. After all, it is our firm belief that in an extraordinarily overwhelming number of cases, the information being reported out of those cases is accurate and correct, and we believe that a recording would help us to prove that." - Jim Pasco, Executive Director, Fraternal Order of Police (NPR Tavis Smiley Show, Jan. 17, 2003.) • "Police and prosecutors have little to fear from a requirement to videotape all interrogations. Recording not only protects the innocent, it helps convict the guilty and sustain the public's faith in our criminal justice system." - Amy Klobuchar, Hennepin County, MN, County Attorney (Klobuchar, "Eye on Interrogations: How Videotaping Serves the Cause of Justice," Washington Post op-ed, June 10, 2002.) • "' [The tapes] usually corroborate and bolster the police version [ of an interrogation and confession.]" - Kankakee County, IL, State Attorney Edward Smith (Eric Zorn, "A Surprise Vote for Videotaping Interrogations," Chicago Tribune, Apr. 19, 2001.) • "[I]f it's done right, there is no more powerful evidence then a videotaped confession there for the defense and the public to see." -Capt. Barney Forsythe, Director of Montgomery County, MD, Police Department Major Crimes Division. (April Witt, "Md. Weighs Taping Police Interviews; Videos Dispel Questions on Tactics," Washington Post, Feb. 12, 2002.) • "Unfortunately, people have come to believe the worst of the police. It is incumbent on those ofus who are interested in bringing back faith in the system to do things that show the integrity of what police and prosecutors do to build a case. -

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by DICK & FITZGERALD, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York. - Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1876, BY DICK & FITZGERALD, In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C. PREFACE. In all ages of the world, and in all countries, men have in dulged in "so cial drinks." They have al ways possess ed themselves of some popu lar beverage apart from water and those of the breakfast and tea table. Whether it is judicious that mankind should con tinue to indulge in such things, or whether it would be wiser to abstain from all enjoyments of that character, it is not our province to decide. We leave that question to the moral philosopher. We simply contend that a relish for "social drinks" is universal; that those drinks exist in greater variety in the United States than in any other country in the world; and that he, therefore, who proposes to impart to these drink not only the most palatable but the most wholesome characteristics of which they may be made susceptible, is a genuine public benefactor.
