We ​ had to go over railroad tracks on bridges and arrive in the community, being checked by the police there. REID HOFFMAN: That’s Monique Sternin, adjunct professor at Tufts University, who’s an ​ expert on nutrition and foreign aid. She’s recounting how she and her late husband, Jerry, traveled to remote farming villages in Vietnam in the early ’90s. Their mission? To solve the plague of malnutrition in children. Vietnam's economy was in terrible shape, and children were paying the price. STERNIN: Over 60% of the children were malnourished – and many of them severely ​ malnourished. We were in a near-famine situation. So: What to do? HOFFMAN: People trying to solve this problem were getting nowhere. Other relief agencies had ​ failed over and over to make an impact. STERNIN: When you have a high level of malnutrition, usually there's a relief agency ​ that brings food and the children get better. But when the agency leaves, the children go back to being malnourished. HOFFMAN: Monique and Jerry set out to find a sustainable solution. They also knew that as ​ outsiders they didn’t have all the answers. They partnered with the local Women's Union and enlisted their help in solving the mystery. Monique started with a specific series of questions. STERNIN: “Do you have any children who are well-nourished?” ​ They looked at their list and they would say, "Yes, yes, we do have a few children who are well-nourished." So we asked, "Well, could we go and find out what those people are doing?" And they said, "Yes." HOFFMAN: Monique and Jerry had to meet these families.

    ARI FLEISCHER CALLS FOR A RETURN OF JEFF GANNON Remember Jeff Gannon? He was the gay sex worker who invented a news outlet that joined the White House on daily press passes for two years. In short, Gannon is an example of the kind of poor vetting that happens with a press office tries to set up more puff coverage for itself. Well, Ari Fleischer wants Gannon back. Less than two months ago, Fleischer (who was investigated for his role in the leak of Valerie Plame’s CIA identity) argued, of Trump’s threat to jail Hillary, “Winning candidates don’t threaten to put opponents in jail. Presidents don’t threaten prosecution of individuals. Trump is wrong on this.” A month later he attempted a last minute, chronologically-challenged self-rehabilitation, claiming he would not vote for Trump.

In this conjuncture, British cultural studies stressed the need for media literacy and critique, learning to read newspapers, TV news, advertisements, TV shows and the like just as one learns to read books (see Kellner, 1995). The project helped g enerate a media literacy movement, expanded the concept of literacy, and introduced a new, powerful dimension of pedagogy into cultural studies. Later, in the 1980s, British cultural studies took on the rise of Thatcherism and the emergence of a new rightwing conservative hegemony in Britain, by explaining how British culture, media, politics, and various economic factors led to the emergence of a new conservative hegemony (see Hall & Jacques, 1983).

I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

    The Change They Believe In Speech for Harlem Tenants Association, November 14, 2008 By Robert Fitch Nellie asks us to foretell what an Obama Administration is going to do for cities, housing and neighborhoods. Of course we can’t really know what’s going to happen in the future. We can only know what’s already happened. So it’s an exercise that reminds me a little of Johnny Carson’s old late night TV routine with his sidekick Ed McMahon. Carson played Karnak the Magnificent. McMahon would give him an answer. And Karnak, wearing a giant turban, and holding an envelope to his forehead, would guess the question inside the envelope. Ed would give an answer like. “A B C D E F G.” Karnak would reply with the question: “Earlier versions of Preparation H.” What’s President-elect Obama’s prescription for urban pains? I’m going to put on my urban turban and try to play Karnak. It’s a difficult role not only because the future is hard to predict; but because Obama himself is not easy to read. In my lifetime, we haven’t had a politician with his gifts: his writing talent; his eloquence; his charisma; his mastery of public policy; his ability to run a national campaign against formidable rivals. Obama projects so brilliant an aura that it’s almost blinding. He’s become the bearer of pride for forty-five million African Americans who want to be judged by the content of their character. He’s the prophet of hope; the apostle of change and the organizer of “Yes We Can.” All this makes Obama’s actual politics very hard to put in any critical perspective.
