GREENING LAMBORN ALTHOUGH representing one of the largest and most interesting collec­ ..r-\. tions of mediaeval coats to be found on any tomb in England, the arms on the Chaucer tomb at Ewelme have never been competently examined, so that the persons represented by them have been only partially, and sometimes incorrectly, identified. The most recent account of them, in the otherwise admirable notes on the church compiled by a late rector, is of little genealogical or heraldic value; and the account in the first volume of the Oxford Journal of Monumental Brasses is of no value at all : , Others to some faint meaning make pretence But Shadwell never deviates into sense.' its author's competence may be judged by his description of ' time-honoured Lancaster' as ' the Duke of Gaunt.' Sir Harris Nicolas, who wrote the Memoir prefixed to the Aldine Chaucer of 1845, realised that the solution of the problem was the construction of a pedigree; but the tree he drew up was quite inade­ quate for the purpose. The earliest record of the coats is in the notebook of Richard Lee, Port­ cullis, who sketched them for his Gatherings of Oxfordshire on his Visitation of the County in 1574. It is now in the Bodleian (Wood MS. D. 14), and a page of it, showing some of the shields on the Ewelme tombs, was reproduced in facsimile in the Harleian Society'S volume of the Visitations of Oxfordshire.

    Bristol customs account Nov 1470 – March 1471: intro TNA, E122/174/3 (part) Margaret M. Condon and Evan T. Jones (eds.), ‘Bristol 1470-71: Particulars of Account of Daniel Sheldon, controller, 4 November 1470 to 29 March 1471: Introduction’ (University of Bristol, Research Data Repository, 2019)1 Text and Comment This newly discovered account was found in a large bundle of fragmentary and undated customs accounts dating from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Generally in good condition, the document has some minor points of damage.2 It consists of a single membrane of parchment displaced from a larger document, the start of which is no longer extant. The missing portion would have covered the period from November 1470 to late January 1471. The surviving membrane of the account begins mid-way through a ship entry for late January 1471 and continues to 29 March of the same year.3 Two additional entries for 30 March and 17 April post-date the formal period of account. Their inclusion is likely to be a consequence of the unstable political situation discussed below. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the account is that it details Bristol’s overseas trade for an eleven-week period during a particularly active phase of the ‘Wars of the Roses’. In September/October 1470, the Earl of Warwick, known as ‘The Kingmaker’ restored the Lancastrian Henry VI to the throne of England and forced the Yorkist monarch, Edward IV, to flee to Holland, which was part of the lands of Edward’s brother-in-law, the Duke of Burgundy.

However Henry VI, with his wife, son and a few knights, fled north and found sanctuary in Scotland, where, in exchange for the town of Berwick, the Scots granted them finance, housing and troops. Henry was therefore able to maintain a presence in Northumberland and his supporters were able to claim that he was in fact as well as in theory sovereign resident in Northumberland.

Other editions. As a member of the powerful House of Neville , she played a critical part in the Wars of the Roses fought between the House of York and House of Lancaster for the English crown. I enjoyed all the drama that took place but I disliked the lack of a lesson, when reading a book I want to be left with a life lesson and I did not find one within this novel. While telling her story Anne notes that Middleham is where she feels at home and was most happy. She proves she can do this during a spell were Anne winds up in a cookshop. Yet although the relationship between Elizabethan politics and literature has been studied often, there has been little research into the political functions of music. Most accounts of court music consist of documentary research into the personnel, institutions and performance occasions, and generally assume that music’s functions were limited to entertainment and displays of magnificence. However, Elizabethans believed that musical concord promoted a social harmony that would ease the process of government; hence politics and music were seen as closely connected. This thesis is an interdisciplinary investigation into the role of music in constructing royal and courtly identities and influencing Elizabeth’s policies and patronage.
