"Let's get this done before Tisha B'av" he would say which in his mind meant something along the lines of "before the cows They donʼt make kugel on come home". That was really the extent of my connection to Tisha B'av -- after all it was a holi - the holidays. Sometimes day that always fell in the summer months when I was busy at sleep away camp. In Jerusalem, Tisha B'Av wasn't a reference point for a day far away, it was a day that happened every year, a day of profound mourning when Jews around the world were given the opportunity to mourn for all of the losses, calamities and tragedies that have befallen the Jewish People. From the defeat of Bar Kochba's rebellion to the edicts of expulsion that were issued against the Jews in England (1290) and Spain (1492) and to the destructions of our first and second Temples which had been the center of Jewish life for so many years. Tisha B'Av, the saddest day of the Jewish year, is a day of mourning; a day on which we Mac-n-cheese? abstain from joyous activities like eating, drinking, washing, intimacy and wearing leather. – Lila Moses, 5 years old Instead, we dedicate this day to remembering and to allowing the losses to permeate our hearts and souls. This year, Erev Tisha B'Av falls on Monday evening, July 15. On that day we will come together as a congregation at 7:30 p.m. in the Gorn Chapel for a powerful hour long service at which we will dim the lights and sit on the floor surrounded by candles to recite the words of Eicha (lamentations) together. Through our remembering, we will experience the sadness inherent in the day but we will also renew our sense of hope — in recognizing that even in our darkest hours — as long as we can hold onto hope — we can endure. Our ancestors did and we can too, as individuals and as the Jewish People. THE VOICE 1 OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO: Dr. Ira Garonzik on the loss of his beloved father, Harvey BAR BAT Aaron Garonzik.
