After dinner in Baddeck, proceed to North Sydney to board the Marine Atlantic ferry for a relaxing overnight crossing to Port aux Basques, your port of entry on the island of Newfoundland. (Dinner) June 25th, Sunday - DAY 2 Port-aux-Basques – Port au Choix Drive through the Codroy Valley and on to Gros Morne National Park – to be enjoyed later on during our tour – to the fishing community of Port au Choix to learn of ancient cultures. The Port au Choix Peninsula juts slightly out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Newfoundland’s northwest coast and people have lived here for 5,500 years. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) June 26th, Monday - DAY 3 Port au Choix – L’Anse au Clair Board the ferry from St. Barbe to cross the Strait of Belle Isle to Labrador. Continue to Red Bay National Historic Site - a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Basques had a whaling station in the 16th century. This mystical place takes the essence of Labrador coastal living and transposes it onto a tapestry of rich culture and history. We spend the night in Labrador. (Breakfast, Dinner) June 27th, Tuesday - DAY 4 L’Anse au Clair – St. Anthony Return to Newfoundland and travel to L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the first cultural discovery in the world to receive recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hear of the Vikings who walked here over a thousand years ago. (Breakfast, Dinner) June 28th, Wednesday - DAY 5 St. Anthony – Cow Head Enjoy a morning whale watching boat tour in St. Anthony (weather permitting) before travelling to Cow Head for a two-night stay. (Breakfast, Dinner) June 29th, Thursday - DAY 6 Gros Morne local touring Discover why Gros Morne National Park is truly one of the highlights of our tour. Enjoy a scenic boat tour (weather permitting) as we learn the geology of the Tablelands, see the bald eagles that frequent the deep waters of the fjord, and hear the history of the small villages nestled on the shores. It is an unforgettable experience; some say the scenery is unequaled in eastern Canada. (Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner) June 30th, Friday - DAY 7 Cow Head - Gander Have your camera at the ready as your time in Gros Morne National Park draws to a close. Later travel through central Newfoundland on to Gander where you spend two nights. (Breakfast, Dinner) July 1st, Saturday - DAY 8 Twillingate Touring A scenic drive along the rocky coast of Notre Dame Bay leads to the beautiful outport of Twillingate. At the tip of the island, visit Long Point Lighthouse and the local co-op. Return to Gander to visit the North Atlantic Aviation Museum before returning to your hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch) July 2nd, Sunday - DAY 9 Gander – Clarenville Head out on the Trans-Canada Highway to visit Terra Nova National Park, the most easterly of Canada’s beautiful national parks. Keep your camera close at hand for wildlife along the way. Learn about the hard life of the light keepers at Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site. This afternoon stroll through the lanes of charming town of Trinity and see several historic buildings including a typical early 20th century rural merchant’s house and a counting house. Arrive at your Clarenville hotel for the night. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) July 3rd, Monday – DAY 10 Clarenville - St. John’s We continue on to the intriguing old seaport of St. John’s, our home for the night. North America’s oldest city and Newfoundland’s capital boosts a stunning location in the granite cliffs and slopes of the Avalon Peninsula. Enjoy a city tour featuring the Victorian architecture of the downtown area, the busy modern waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Confederation Building, and the panoramic view from Signal Hill. (Breakfast, Dinner) July 4th, Tuesday - DAY 11 St. John’s This morning, we travel to Bay Bulls for one of the highlights of our trip, a boat tour in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve (weather permitting) to search for puffins and other seabirds. Next is a visit to the most easterly point in North America, Cape Spear National Historic Site. The afternoon is yours to enjoy St. John’s at your leisure.     CANADIAN MARITIMES 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 SMART Canadian Maritimes Caravan 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 Wagon Masters: Carl and Gwen Hopper Assistant Wagon Masters: Mark and Linda Avey The 2016 Canadian Maritimes Caravan started and ended in Hermon, Maine, and covered over 3,000 miles in the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. We started the trip with 19 rigs but unfortunately lost one in Monc- ton, New Brunswick ,due to an accident. No one was seriously injured, but we had to continue on with only 18 rigs. Some of the highlights of this trip included the Bay of Fundy with 25-foot tides, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, rides on the Bluenose II and Amoeba sailing vessels, whale watching tours, and some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in the world. Some of our group even took a day trip to Labrador, while others sailed out of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, to view icebergs and whales. We enjoyed many caravan-sponsored dinners with lots of lobster and other seafood. This was an amazing trip which was made even more enjoyable by the outstanding people who traveled with us. Many thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make this a truly memorable trip.
