Nikolskoye was founded by Prince Odoyevsky in 1621. Back then, the manor house was situated on the left bank of the small river Lipenka. About fifty years later, Nikita Odoyevsky decided to move the boyar's house and the domestic outbuildings to the opposite bank of the river and replaced the small wooden church with a new, brick one. The church still stands where it was originally built, at some distance from the houses, up the hill. The village used to be- gin from that church, one street running up from the river, the oth- er – along the bank. After the Odoyevskys, Nikolskoye used to change hands belong- ing to Sergei Golitsyn, Andrey Kaisarov and, in the middle of the 18th century, to the Dolgorukys. In 1774, Nikolskoye was bought by Nikolay Alexeyevich Golitsyn, the owner of the neighbouring 12 13 получило одновременно с Архангельским, оставаясь, однако, всего лишь его своеобразным филиалом. Arkhangelskoye, with, probably, the intention to expand his hold- ings. That explains why the decoration of Nikolskoye was started at the same time as that of Arkhangelskoye, Nikolskoye still remain- ing a kind of a minor copy of the grand Arkhangelskoye. Golitsyn was eager to start reconstruction of Nikolskoye immedi- ately. It is highly probable that the mysterious French architect, a Chevalier de Guern, who was working in Arkhangelskoye at the time, was also involved in the reconstruction of Uryupino. How else can be explained the fact of erection in Nikolskoye of the amaz- ingly elegant pavilion in the style of Louis XVI? Monsieur de Guern disappeared as oddly as he had appeared leav- ing behind him this masterpiece as a memory of his real existance. Only once did the Russian history mention the name of de Guern: 14 15 Одноэтажный, с антресолями и колонной-лоджией со сторо- ны парка, «Белый домик» выстроен в 1776–1778 годах.
