A HAUNTING STORY – DOROTHY SAYERS’S GAUDY NIGHT Dorothy Sayers, poet, novelist, playwright, essayist and translator, was Born in 1893 in Oxford. In 1912 she won a scholarship to Somerville to read medieval French. She took a First Class degree but had to wait until 1920 to Be awarded it, when women were at last admitted to degrees. Her first novel, Whose Body? published in 1923, established her protagonist Lord Peter Wimsey, while a sequel, Strong Poison, 1930, introduced his future companion Harriet Vane. Sayers’s 1935 novel Gaudy Night, featuring both Wimsey and Vane, is set in an Oxford women’s college closely based on Somerville, though transplanted to St Cross Road and ‘the Balliol cricket ground’, and re-named Shrewsbury, and it’s because of these evocations of a Somerville of the past that I’m talking aBout it today, when we’ve gathered to talk (partly at least) about our own pasts in this college. Re-reading Gaudy Night, we notice how much Somerville changed Between 1935 and 1967, when we came up, and how much it has changed again since. Sayers’s novels have traditionally been fitted into the genre she herself called detective stories. Sometimes such works would Be called mystery stories. Gaudy Night, though it comes suitaBly freighted with mystery and with crime, can also fruitfully be read, I’m going to suggest, as a ghost story. Even though many of you must know the novel well, I’m going to invite you to take another look at it. Gaudy Night is littered with references to ghosts. -

Sayers’ Unnatural Death (1927) Katherine Bischoping and Riley Olstead A Mystery of Four Sapphists In 1927, Dorothy L. Sayers published her third mystery novel, Unnatural Death ,1 in an England reeling from the uncertainties and instabilities of a new modernity. A war of unprecedented brutality had demoralised Europe. In England, there had been six changes of Prime Minister within a decade, as well as an economic slump. 2 Definitions of femininity and of women’s social roles were in flux. During World War I, women had gained jobs that had hitherto been held only by men; afterward, women’s job options again narrowed. England’s two million “surplus women” were newly identified as a social problem, suffragettes were demonstrating, Freud’s works were in the bookshops, and hems were on the rise. The New Woman was also on the rise, and Sayers’ character, Mary Whittaker, appears to be a prototype. Possessing “handsome, strongly-marked features and [a] quiet air of authority”, she “was of the type that ‘does well’ in City offices.” 3 Unnatural Death ’s plot centres on various detectives’ efforts to establish that Mary had murdered her wealthy and ailing great-aunt Agatha Dawson – a crime that appeared to lack both means and motive. Agatha’s demise was imminent and Mary appeared to be her lone relative and obvious heir. The detectives eventually establish that Mary had committed a murder that left no trace by injecting Agatha with a syringe full of air, stopping her heart. -

James are writers of classical detective fiction whose work is firmly anchored to a recognisably English culture, yet little attention has been given to this aspect of their work. I seek to redress this. Using Simon Gikandi’s concept of “the incomplete project of colonisation” ( Maps of Englishness 9) I argue that within the works of Sayers and James the British Empire informs and complicates notions of Englishness. Sayers’s Lord Peter Wimsey and James’s Adam Dalgliesh share, with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, both detecting expertise and the character of the “imperial detective”. -

NOTE This is one of the final Lord Peter Wimsey stories, first published in Detection Medley, edited by John Rhode (Hutchinson & Co. Ltd.), in 1939. STRIDING FOLLY A Lord Peter Wimsey Story ‘Shall I expect you next Wednesday for our game as usual?’ asked Mr Mellilow. ‘Of course, of course,’ replied Mr Creech. ‘Very glad there’s no ill feeling, Mellilow. Next Wednesday as usual. Unless ...’ his heavy face darkened for a moment, as though at some disagreeable recollection. ‘There may be a man coming to see me. If I’m not here by nine, don’t expect me. In that case, I’ll come on Thursday.’ Mr Mellilow let his visitor out through the french window and watched him cross the lawn to the wicket gate leading to the Hall grounds. It was a clear October night, with a gibbous moon going down the sky. Mr Mellilow slipped on his goloshes (for he was careful of his health and the grass was wet) and himself went down past the sundial and the fish-pond and through the sunk garden till he came to the fence that bounded his tiny freehold on the southern side. He leaned his arms on the rail and gazed across the little valley at the tumbling river and the wide slope beyond, which was crowned, at a mile’s distance, by the ridiculous stone tower known as the Folly. The valley, the slope and the tower all belonged to Striding Hall. They lay there, peaceful and lovely in the moonlight as though nothing could ever disturb their fantastic solitude. -

When I started reading her detective novels I found a richness in both characterization and plot that impressed me. In 1920, the young writer‐to‐be was among the first group of women to be awarded a Master’s Degree at Oxford University. This was an experience that she later used when describing her heroine Harriet Vane’s adventures in Gaudy Night (1935), generally considered her most important and personal novel. Sayers writes that “[i]t is the only book I’ve written embodying any kind of a ’moral’ and I do feel rather passionately about this business of the integrity of the mind” (Reynolds, 261). In this essay, I intend to read the novel Gaudy Night from a class and gender perspective in order to find what this moral really consists of and furthermore to explore Sayers’ notion of the integrity of the mind. Sayers’ early detective novels had become popular due to her creation of Lord Peter Wimsey – a fantastic sleuth, who made his first appearance in Whose Body? (1923).
