Love Songs Press Release
1 THE MOST ROMANTIC SONGS RECORDED BY THE ACCLAIMED AARON NEVILLE, INCLUDING TRACKS WITH LINDA RONSTADT AND THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, COLLECTED ON NEW COMPILATION AARON NEVILLE: LOVE SONGS “With an angelic voice capable of reconciling spiritual opposites-–wisdom and innocence, masculinity and femininity, the sacred and the profane--(Aaron) Neville can pretty much find the soul of any song...(using) that famous catch in his throat to convey the exuberance of unbridled passion.” --Rolling Stone (1995) The sweet soulful voice of Aaron Neville--the most familiar figure of New Orleans’ first family of music--has been brought to bear on love songs since the late ‘60s. Now 14 of those love songs from his most successful period, the ‘80s and ‘90s, have been collected on Aaron Neville: Love Songs (A&M/UME), released January 14, 2003. With the album co-compiled by Neville himself, each digitally remastered track was selected for its power of romance rather than its chart position. As a result, Aaron Neville: Love Songs brings most of these songs, spanning the years 1981 to 1997, together for the first time on any compilation. The album is the latest in the artist-driven, genre-crossing yet thematic Love Songs series which has previously included collections from Etta James, Elton John, and Stephanie Mills and is scheduled to release albums from Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, the Moody Blues, Peggy Lee and more. Two recordings heard on Aaron Neville: Love Songs are actually from The Neville Brothers (Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril): their Nawlins renditions of the doo-wop classic “The Ten Commandments Of Love” and ballad standard “Mona Lisa,” both from the siblings’ 1981 Joel Dorn-produced album Fiyo On The Bayou. -

Bonfires on the Bayou
Bonfires On The Bayou Feux de la St. Jean, Dr. John and Marie Laveau From a 1927 article caption in the New Orleans States André Lafargue (1878 – 1949), attorney, civic leader, cultural preservationist and one-time editor of L’Abeille de la Nouvelle Orléans, Louisiana’s last French-language newspaper, penned these words in an article in the New Orleans States, dated December 18, 1927: “Some places are named haphazardly, others in most illogical, arbitrary or unreasonable fashion. Not so with Bayou St. John. It was fitting and proper, eminently just and fair, that the name of the founder of the Crescent City, Jean Baptiste Lemoyne de Bienville, should be linked with the historic stream.” “From the very first he became an outspoken champion of the ‘bayou’ and of its importance in connection with the large trading post which he contemplated building on the banks of the Mississippi river. In his honor, therefore, the bayou was named “St. Jean” (St. John), the name of his patron saint.” The connections between Bayou St. John, Lake Pontchartrain and the River were key factors in the founding of New Orleans and why it is located where it is today. Bayou St. John was a vital link to a special pathway known as a portage, or a route where items are regularly carried between bodies of water. Portage, in addition to being such a pathway, is also defined as the practice of carrying one’s watercraft (such as canoes or pirogues) or cargo over land, either around an obstacle in a river or stream, or between one navigable body of water and another. -

1 NEW COMPILATION THE BEST OF THE NEVILLE BROTHERS PRESENTS THE FAVORITE TRACKS OF NEW ORLEANS’ FIRST FAMILY OF FUNK The Neville Brothers are one of America’s most treasured musical institutions--New Orleans’ First Family of Funk. Aaron, Arthur, Charles and Cyril meld R&B, soul, rock, doo wop, traditional folk, Native American music, and bayou blues into their own unmistakable gumbo. The Best Of The Neville Brothers edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (A&M/UMe), released June 8, 2004, features a dozen of their most popular recordings, each digitally remastered, spanning the group’s six A&M albums (one in 1981, the others from 1989-96). The brothers had enjoyed success individually and in other groups before coming together in 1977. After an album on another label, the quartet signed with A&M on the enthusiastic recommendation of Bette Midler, who had caught them grooving hard at their Tipitina’s home base. With veteran jazz producer Joel Dorn at the helm, the Nevilles’ first A&M album, 1981’s Fiyo On The Bayou, augmented the brothers with the likes of Whitney and Cissy Houston as background vocalists and saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman. “Fire On The Bayou,” the Cajun Mardi Gras of “Hey Pocky Way” and the traditional New Orleans R&B of the medley “Brother John/Iko Iko” captured the vibe of the Big Easy. After a few years away from the label, the Nevilles returned to cut the brilliant 1989 album Yellow Moon with producer Daniel Lanois. The set boasted a tremendously atmospheric title track as well as a spine-chilling reprise of Sam Cooke’s immortal “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and “Sister Rosa,” their heartfelt tribute to civil rights pioneer Rosa 2 Parks. -
