Capizzi, Ph.D. Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis humanae (DH), poses the problem of development in Catholic moral and social doctrine. This problem is threefold, consisting in properly understanding the meaning of pre-conciliar magisterial teaching on religious liberty, the meaning of DH itself, and the Declaration’s implications for how social doctrine develops. A survey of recent scholarship reveals that scholars attend to the first two elements in contradictory ways, and that their accounts of doctrinal development are vague. The dissertation then proceeds to the threefold problematic. Chapter two outlines the general parameters of doctrinal development. The third chapter gives an interpretation of the pre- conciliar teaching from Pius IX to John XXIII. To better determine the meaning of DH, the fourth chapter examines the Declaration’s drafts and the official explanatory speeches (relationes) contained in Vatican II’s Acta synodalia. The fifth chapter discusses how experience may contribute to doctrinal development and proposes an explanation for how the doctrine on religious liberty changed, drawing upon the work of Jacques Maritain and Basile Valuet. -

Supervisor: Prof. Susan Rakoczy 2009 Pietermaritzburg i ABSTRACT This thesis falls within the area of systematic theology. It seeks, by examining Jacques Dupuis’s theological concepts and proposals, to evaluate his perspective on a Christian theology of religious pluralism. The concepts which are examined include the idea of a single history of salvation and revelation, God’s revelation in the sacred scriptures of other religions, the universality and uniqueness of Jesus Christ, the church in relation to the Reign of God, and the characteristics of interreligious dialogue. The main theological proposals cover religious pluralism “in principle”, the Trinitarian Christology for understanding God’s saving activity outside of Christianity, and the world religions as “participated” mediations of salvation. A brief characterisation is presented of Dupuis’s life and theology in general, the influences on his thought and its evolution, and his difficulties with the Vatican. The research also covers the historical theological context out of which the theology of “inclusive pluralism” emerges, giving an overview of the main approaches to religions, namely, ecclesiocentrism, Christocentrism and theocentrism in a Christian theology of religions. Dupuis uses the Trinitarian approach to the religious history of humanity to explain the work of the Holy Trinity in the process of salvation of humanity focusing on a distinction between the enduring action of the eternal Word of God, the Word incarnate in Jesus Christ and the saving presence of the Spirit. -

Following the Council, the Church is perceived more as a servant and has become more open to the world. But some of the questions that emerge are: How come did the Church, whose originary experiences were the Exodus the Resurrection, forgot its basic message? How come have the memory and history of the Church been partially distorted or deviated in the course of the last 2,000 years? How can we rediscover the Joy of the Gospels today? How do we reconcile the liberal and conservative elements of the Church in general and in their perception of Vatican II? With these questions in mind, we first recall Paul Ricoeur’s contribution to memory, forgiveness and healing. Then we reflect on some of the profound changes brought about the Council, based primarily on one historian of the Council. The Teaching and Methodology of Pacem in Terris Charles E. Curran Pacem in Terris, Pope John XIII’s 1963 encyclical, is one of a series of hierarchical Catholic Church documents, beginning with Leo XIII’s en- cyclical Rerum Novarum (1891), which addresses the social problems facing society. Pope John Paul II and many others refer to these docu- ments as Catholic social teaching,1 although all recognize that, in the broad sense, Catholic social teaching involves much more than just these documents. The documents of Catholic social teaching will fur- nish the primary lens through which this essay will discuss three as- pects of Pacem in Terris—its methodology, its social teaching, and its optimism. Methodology Pacem in Terris emphasizes a natural law methodology appealing not primarily to the theological categories of redemption, Jesus Christ, and grace but to the ordering of natural law found in human nature that our conscience reveals to us. The theological basis for natural law is the work of the Creator, and by definition all humankind can discern this order and law in human nature and in conscience. The natural law was the characteristic approach of pre-Vatican II Catholic moral theology and was the basis for all Catholic social teaching. Pacem in Terris, in its seven-paragraph introduction, spells out more clearly than any other document of Catholic social teaching its natural law methodology. VATICAN II ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM MSGR. JOHN P. KLEINZ * N 1948 the United Nations adopted a Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man. The World Council of Churches issued its Declaration on Religious Freedom at Amsterdam in 1948 and again definitively at New Delhi in 1961. Both proclaimed the individual person's human and civil right to form his own conscience according to his religious convictions and to determine his relationship to other churches. In 1965, at the end of the Second Vatican Council, another inter- national organization, the Roman Catholic Church, promulgated its own Declaration on Religious Freedom. Its Latin title, from the first three words, is Dignitatis Humanae Personae. Its subtitle already restricts its scope: "On the right of the person and of communities to social and civil freedom in matters religious." Its central thesis is: "It is an injustice done to the human persons, and to the order laid down for men by God, if a man is denied the free exercise of religion in society; saving a just public order." All three declarations propose essentially the same juridical prin- ciple. -

VATICAN II AS I EXPERIENCED IT Michael Costigan* A memorable Roman autumn Autumn is an enchanting time in Rome. By October the relentless heat of July and August, from which many of the Romans themselves flee, is only an uncomfortable memory. The days are shorter, often blessed by cloudless skies, with mild sunshine enhancing the golden glow of some of the ancient and modern buildings, especially in the late afternoon. The Romans, including the Pope and his court, have returned, the number of tourists has declined, the schools and universities are open for business and hot roasted chestnuts are on sale at street corners – or used to be in my day. After living through nine Roman autumns as a seminarian and student- priest between 1952 and 1961, I welcomed the chance in 1963 to experience one more of those magical seasons, probably my last and certainly the most memorable of all. I was there that year for the second of the four autumnal sessions of the Second Vatican Council, as a priest-reporter commissioned to cover the event for the Melbourne Catholic Advocate, of which I was the Associate Editor, as well as for three other Australian Catholic weekly newspapers. With the Australian Catholic Historical Society marking the 50th anniversary this year of the opening of Vatican II by making that event the theme of several of the monthly papers scheduled for 2012, the Society’s President suggested I help to set the scene by painting a picture of what it was actually like to be at the Council. My writings and diary My memory of the 77 days I spent in Rome during that autumn is aided by the voluminous reports I mailed back to Australia and by a pamphlet subsequently published by the Australian Catholic Truth Society with the title Vatican Council Survey, in which I summarised those reports.1 In addition, I kept a rough diary in an exercise book in which, usually before retiring late at night, I noted my daily activities in and around the Council. -

Twenty-nine years old, newly married, and fresh from the Society of Jesus, where he had spent ten years as a novice and scholastic, Bob Kaiser was picked for one of the most exciting jobs in journalism of his era: Time's reporter at the Second Vatican Council. In the words of Michael Novak: "No reporter knew more about the Council; had talked with more of the personalities, prominent or minor; had more sources of information to tap. Sunday evening dinner parties at his apartment became a rendezvous of stimulating and informed persons. In the English-speaking world, at least, perhaps no source was to have quite the catalytic effect as Time on opinion outside the Council and even to an extent within it." Much of inner story of the Council-its personalities, machinations, maneuverings between progressive forces and the old guard-was told in Bob Kaiser's bestseller of the early sixties Pope, Council, and World. This is a different story, one so raw and personal that it could only be told some forty years later in a very different church and by a much matured Bob Kaiser. The heart of the story is how Bob's wife was seduced by his friend, the Jesuit priest Malachy Martin, and how Martin ("a man who could make people laugh in seven languages)" persuaded Kaiser's other clerical friends (including notable bishops and prominent theologians) to send him to a sanitorium. The story is at once hilarious (Martin was one of the great clerical con men of all time) and sobering. -

THE PREPARATORY THEOLOGICAL COMMISSION Joseph A. Komonchak On Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 1960, Pope John XXIII issued the motu proprio, Superno Dei nutu, in which he closed the antepreparatory period and initiated the preparatory period of Vatican II.1 The first of the ten preparatory commissions he established was a theological commission (PTC), "to examine questions concerning Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, faith and morals."2 Two days later, it was learned that all these commissions would be chaired by the heads of the corresponding curial congregations and thus that the PTC would be headed by Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani, pro-prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office. Within the next month the secretaries of the new commissions were announced, all of them drawn also from the parallel curial offices, and among them Fr. Sebastian Tromp, S.J., consultor to the Holy Office and professor of theology at the Gregorian University, was named as secretary to the PTC.3 That the Pope assigned the direction of the preparatory work to leading figures in the Roman Curia surprised and disconcerted a good number of observers. As Cardinal Tardini himself had noted in a meeting of the Antepreparatory Commission devoted to establishing the organisms for the preparatory period, one of the criticisms of the Antepreparatory Commission was that it had been composed only of curial figures. While he thought the accusation unfair, it had to be taken into account in decisions about the composition of the preparatory commissions.4 Although he decided to have Curial Cardinals chair the commissions, Pope John, in his Pentecost address, made it clear that the Council would be a distinct body from that of the Curia: The Ecumenical Council has a structure and organization of its own which must not be confused with the ordinary and characteristic functions of the various dicasteries and congregations of the Roman Curia which even during the Council will continue its ordinary operations of general administration of holy Church. -
