The Monmouth Chapter was invited by its Community Partner, the Monmouth University Student Veteran Association, to participate in a week-long series of arts events to honor Veterans at Monmouth University during 1-5 October 2018. These events celebrated the Veteran experience and their stories through visual, literary and theatre arts and were at no cost to Veterans and their families. On October 05, 2018, the week’s events culminated with a performance of the one-man play, “The American Soldier: 1774- 2015”, an award-winning work written by, and starring, Mr Douglas Taurel, professional actor (Blue Bloods, Nurse Jackie), producer and writer, which was presented at the Monmouth University Pollak Theater. Attending from the AUSA Monmouth Chapter were LTC (R) Richard Gaudio, Board Member and his wife Laurel. The performance offered a first local look at this powerful work that examines more than 240 years of American history through the eyes of the people on the front lines, both literally and emotionally, of the conflicts that have framed and defined our nation’s history and place in the world. Drawn from first-person stories, journalistic accounts and letters that span the centuries from the Revolutionary War through the present-day operations in Afghanistan, “The American Soldier” brings the audience face to face with the often overlooked Warriors who answered the call to serve their country, as well as those who waited on the home front for the safe return of their loved ones. A pre-show reception and viewing of the week’s artwork by Veterans took place prior to the performance. All active and retired Military and their families received complimentary tickets to this event. Over 100 Veterans and guests attended along with a contingent of University students. This series of events was co-sponsored by Monmouth University’s Visiting Writers Series, the Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Social Work’s “Coming Home Project”, the Office of Veterans Services and the Center for the Arts. Programs such as these enhance the University’s relationship with the community.
