Krogstad Mambo from West Side Story Leonard Bernstein 2 Many thanks to the Elgin Symphony’s education committee for the idea to take this concert on a world tour! It was a unanimous choice: let’s sample orchestral music from the world’s seven continents. Choosing the repertoire for the concert was not as easy as we thought it might be during the conception of this program. How can we narrow down the large quantity of orchestral music from Europe, where the symphony orchestra originated? Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven would all be obvious choices. In a surprising twist we chose a composer from Poland, the home of the brilliant violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski. We are thrilled to have young violinist Claire Arias-Kim as our soloist for Wieniawski’s Polonaise brilliante No. 2. What repertoire can we choose from the continents with musical traditions that don’t necessarily include traditional western orchestral instruments? What do we do about Antarctica? (We always try to program something that’s just pure fun.) For Africa, we felt it was important to demonstrate the drumming traditions and to highlight the expertise of one of our members, percussionist Michael Folker. It became a concert of interesting connections. -

Specifically, it focuses on musical engagements between, on the one hand, the Caribbean and West Africa and, on the other, the United States and Southern Africa. It argues that the influence of diasporan music on modern African music, especially popular music, has been immense. These influences and exchanges have created a complex tapestry of musical Afro- internationalism and Afro-modernism and music has been a critical site, a soundscape, in the construction of new diasporan and African identities. -

FULL SCORE Spirit of Africa For Soprano Soloist, SATB Choir and Chamber Orchestra Photo: David Fanshawe, East Africa Music: Liz Lane Words: Jennifer Henderson Spirit of Africa Programme note Spirit of Africa is written as a companion piece to David Fanshawe’s African Sanctus and is inspired by the colours and symbolic meanings of the flags of Egypt, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya, the countries visited by David during his travels recording music for African Sanctus in 1969-1973. The words and music of the five movements trace a journey through the day, with the colour white for daybreak mist, green for morning freshness, red for midday heat, gold for sunset and black for night; each with its own mood and character, hopes and fears. Spirit of Africa is dedicated to David and his wife Jane. Liz Lane and Jennifer Henderson, May 2012 www.lizlane.co.uk 1. Promise of daybreak veiled in the early mist, hidden in shadows that cling to the night; Earth turning slowly toward a new journey into the morning, unknown, beyond sight. Sweet is the air in the breath of the morning, spirit of purity, radiant light! 2. City Research Online: http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/ [email protected] ‘Music and Remembrance: Britain and the First World War’ Dr Peter Grant (City University, UK) & Dr Emma Hanna (U. of Greenwich, UK) Introduction In his research using a Mass Observation study, John Sloboda found that the most valued outcome people place on listening to music is the remembrance of past events.1 While music has been a relatively neglected area in our understanding of the cultural history and legacy of 1914-18, a number of historians are now examining the significance of the music produced both during and after the war.2 This chapter analyses the scope and variety of musical responses to the war, from the time of the war itself to the present, with reference to both ‘high’ and ‘popular’ music in Britain’s remembrance of the Great War. -

102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns. MTV’s founders, however, were so culturally conserva- tive that many were initially wary of playing African American artists; addition- ally, record labels were hesitant to put their top artists onto this new, risky chan- 1 American President Ronald Reagan had increased peace-time deicit defense spending substantially. -

Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24th – 26th June St Anne’s College University of Oxford Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24-26 June, St Anne’s College WELCOME It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to St Anne’s College and the Oxford Conducting Institute Conducting Studies Conference 2016. The conference brings together 44 speakers from around the globe presenting on a wide range of topics demonstrating the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The practice of conducting has significant impact on music-making across a wide variety of ensembles and musical contexts. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting masterclasses and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, there has yet to be a space where this knowledge has been brought together and explored as a cohesive topic. The OCI Conducting Studies Conference aims to redress this by bringing together practitioners and researchers into productive dialogue, promoting practice as research and raising awareness of the state of research in the field of conducting studies. We hope that this conference will provide a fruitful exchange of ideas and serve as a lightning rod for the further development of conducting studies research.
