He has a hearty, rollicking laugh. He neither knows nor accepts limits. He is incapable of being deceitful or devious. Santa is a straight road of rough earth. Santa also has a dream, to immigrate to Australia. He read somewhere that everything is the other way round there and, things being as they are, that's always an advantage. JOSE (Luis Tosar): Jose's character is changing. Unemployment is lengthening his silences, his indecision, and honing his bad moods. Unemployment sneaks into his house every night. It has a key and comes and goes at will. A meddler, it gets into bed between him and his wife, like a third party, driving them apart. Jose sees Ana going out every night, and sometimes he sleeps and sometimes he doesn't, but the third party is always with him. LINO (José Ángel Egido): Lino is still trying. He goes regularly for job interviews, every morning he puts on his clean shirt, his borrowed suit, and his highest hopes. But his hands betray him. They sweat nervously. Lino dries them with a handkerchief while he parades his insecurity through the waiting rooms of temporary employment, offering his anxiety in exchange for eighty thousand pesetas a month, six months of uncertainty, another prorogation. ANA (Nieve de Medina): She works on the night shift in a canning factory and is obsessed by how she smells. She is constantly showering, scrubbing herself, and smelling herself. Ana has the hard expression and calm gaze of someone who hopes that things may change some day. She still retains a lot of the beauty which she thinks she has lost, and a certain weariness slows down her movements, as if time, to get a better look at her, were passing by her more slowly. AMADOR (Celso Bugallo): A bit older than the others, he stopped trying some time ago. He speaks occasionally and is only understood occasionally. He drinks constantly, invited by the others, who don't realize that Amador kisses the glass when he drinks. Reserved, silent, Amador is a distorted mirror, in which any of the others could soon see their reflections. One night, which lasts longer than usual, Santa accompanies him home and discovers his secret. SERGEI (Serge Riaboukine): Sergei is Russian and can walk among the stars. He was going to be an astronaut, or at least that's what he says. When the Soviet Union fell, his program was cancelled and he was left on earth. The others look at him skeptically, but it is true that Sergei's eyes shine when he talks about the heavens, and they turn blue, as if they were reflecting the sky. REINA (Enrique Villén): He is a night watchman on a building site near the local soccer field. On Sundays, the group of friends, wrapped in blankets and overcoats, watch the games from there. Reina found the job some time ago and this, inevitably, distances him from the others. It puts a gap between them which gets wider every day. RICO (Joaquín Climent): He is almost fifty years old and has a large, soulless bar. The friends gather there, talking away the wasted hours, gambling their hopes on the fruit machine… In the bar, there is a mixture of memories, silences, and projects. Rico listens. Rico serves. Rico gives credit. He tolerates the men who used to be his fellow workers. de regissseur Fernando Leon de Aranoa, geboren in Madrid in mei '68, studeerde af in de audiovisuele wetenschap aan de Complutense Universiteit van Madrid. • No Country for Old Men (2007)
No Country for Old Men (2007) “I got it under control.” Major Credits: Director: Joel & Ethan Coen Screenplay: Joel & Ethan Coean; adapted from the novel by Cormac McCarthy Cinematography: Roger Deakins Editing: Roderick Jaynes (pseudonym for Joel & Ethan Coen) Cast: Tommy Lee Jones (Sheriff Ed Tom Bell), Javier Bardem (Anton Chigurh), Josh Brolin (Llewelyn Moss, Woody Harrelson (Carson Wells), Kelly Macdonald (Carla Jean Moss) Background: No Country for Old Men marks a return to the regionally inflected, ultra-violent crime dramas that made the Coen brothers icons of independent filmmaking with Blood Simple (1984), Miller’s Crossing (1990), and the Oscar-winning Fargo (1996). Critical praise for the film was nearly unanimous, with reviewers praising the taut storytelling, creepy suspense, dark wit, memorable dialogue (much of which is quoted verbatim from McCarthy’s novel), and compelling performances. The overall feeling of the film vacillates between recognizable movie genres—the Western (Sheriff Bell seems to have stepped out of High Noon; Anton Chigurh is the most implacable villain since Hannibal Lechter in The Silence of the Lambs), the crime thriller (the plot may remind some of A Simple Plan, the suitcase full of money recalls Pulp Fiction)—and classical epic, with Bell playing the Chorus and Chigurh The Furies. The indeterminate ending, which mystifies or infuriates many viewers (and faithfully follows the novel), suggests the shaggy dog tale quality of the Coen brothers’ own The Big Lebowski (!998). Cinematic Qualities: My own term for the film’s style is “Tex-Mex Film Noir.” Beginning with Sheriff Ed Tom Bell’s opening voiceover (“I don’t know what to make of that.”) and the silence of the arid, threatening landscape Llewelyn surveys, the Coens sustain an ominous vision of a world beyond human comprehension or control.
