McAskill, La Salle University ([email protected]) N6015 NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (USA, 2007) Credits: directors/writers, Joel and Ethan Coen ; novel, Cormac McCarthy. Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald. Summary: Crime thriller set in West Texas in 1980. Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande. The hunter, Llewelyn Moss (Brolin), impulsively takes the money. Later that night, he suffers a twinge of conscience for having left one of the drug dealers still dying and returns to the crime scene only to be shot at by unknown men before escaping in a nearby river. That misplaced act of kindness exposes Moss’s identity and sets several individuals on his trail. These include the local county sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Jones), Carson Wells (Harrelson) an intermediary for the money’s rightful owner, and psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh (Bardem) representing the drug dealers. Both Moss and Wells, it emerges, are Vietnam veterans, but that does not help them escape Anton. Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.

On March 26, 2004, the late war heroine Mrs Elizabeth Choy declared The Arts House open as the guest-of-honour. Her benediction gave us the boost of confidence – the skies did clear up after raining non-stop – and we have been on a mission ever since to fulfil our mandate as “the Singapore Arts House”. Thousands of performances, readings, exhibitions and film screenings later, and after supporting hundreds of Singapore artists (showcasing them abroad as well: Hong Kong, Tokyo, Moscow, Cape Town), we have finally reached this milestone. Through many ups and downs and various changes – physically, programmatically, and even financially – we have always stayed true to our vision of being an arts centre that is “all-encompassing and that is always relevant to the needs of the communities of Singapore”. We wanted to mark our 10th anniversary by celebrating our achievements but at the same time, we are also very eager to look forward to the future – to the next decade as a centre for writing, writers and ideas.
