For updates, please visit our website at www.theartshouse.com.sg DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE The Arts House turns 10 this March! On March 26, 2004, the late war heroine Mrs Elizabeth Choy declared The Arts House open as the guest-of-honour. Her benediction gave us the boost of confidence – the skies did clear up after raining non-stop – and we have been on a mission ever since to fulfil our mandate as “the Singapore Arts House”. Thousands of performances, readings, exhibitions and film screenings later, and after supporting hundreds of Singapore artists (showcasing them abroad as well: Hong Kong, Tokyo, Moscow, Cape Town), we have finally reached this milestone. Through many ups and downs and various changes – physically, programmatically, and even financially – we have always stayed true to our vision of being an arts centre that is “all-encompassing and that is always relevant to the needs of the communities of Singapore”. We wanted to mark our 10th anniversary by celebrating our achievements but at the same time, we are also very eager to look forward to the future – to the next decade as a centre for writing, writers and ideas. We approached award-winning director Chong Tze Chien, of theatre company The Finger Players, to conceptualise and direct our anniversary programme. He was game enough to take on the challenge. In fact, he came up with a brilliantly counterintuitive concept: What if The Arts House does not exist any more? What if it has been taken over by a giant bookstore, a dance hall, and heaven forbid, even a hotel? So in an immersive visual and performance installation show The Next Page (page 02 – 05), which utilises the entire House, we create an alternate, tongue-in-cheek reality in which the The Arts House has disappeared from the scene. Audiences are taken on a romp through an altered history where they are moved to “reminisce” about The Arts House. Sounds warped? Well, you have to experience it yourself. So come celebrate with us and help us turn to The Next Page! See you at The Arts House! William Phuan Director The Arts House 1\40 featured \ the arts house turns 10 THE ARTS HOUSE TURNS 10 THE NEXT PAGE presented by The Arts House turns 10 with a two-week-long celebration as we look THE ARTS HOUSE forward to The Next Page! Come celebrate with us as we present an exciting line-up of shows, exhibitions, outdoor performances and 26 Mar - 6 Apr, 8pm writers’ talks, anchored by the immersive visual and performance installation show The Next Page, conceived and directed by Artistic $10; $8 (Concession for students, senior citizens and Director Chong Tze Chien of The Finger Players. The Arts House members) The Next Page Tickets are available at The Arts House celebrates its 10th Anniversary by “disappearing” www.bytes.sg. from the scene! In a tongue-in-cheek tribute to its 10th year milestone, The Arts House creates an alternative universe/history where a mega bookstore (The Next Page) has taken over the premises from its previous tenants – a dance club and a posh 5-star boutique hotel! Conceptualised as an immersive visual and performance installation, The Next Page is the anchor show of our 10th celebrations. It invites visitors to view remnants of the dance hall and hotel, which have been “preserved”, while it also offers them the full retail experience of a Singapore bookstore (BooksActually pop-up store). At night, site-specific performances by the most celebrated thespians of Singapore theatre will regale the audience with a mock historical tour of the site, as they present an alternative history without The Arts House, celebrating its significance and contributions to the arts scene via its “absence”. 40\2 featured \ the arts house turns 10 THE OPENING By Cake Theatrical Productions and Brian Gothong Tan The opening outdoor segment will feature a colourful display of pageantry that celebrates the written word and literature amidst a dynamic multimedia video projection on the facade of the building. Expect a poetic and powerful opening to kick start the celebrations. The hisTorian’s Tour Directed by Chong Tze Chien \ Written by Lucas Ho An alternative history of The Arts House will be presented by a trio of historians in a roving performance. They will regale the audiences with interesting anecdotes that shed light on the developments and turn of events regarding the site. THE CLEANER'S ACCOUNT Directed by Chong Tze Chien \ Written by Lucas Ho In this 5-min segment, a witness of history, the cleaner recounts the stories that transpired in the premises in its different functions: from Parliament House to The Arts House, to the dance hall and hotel. THE COUPLE IN THE HOTEL ROOM Directed by Peter Sau, Rizman Putra and Engie Ho Written by Joel Tan A couple checks into the hotel on its last day of operation. As they reminisce about their history together, they contemplate the significance of the hotel in their relationship and what it means to them as it is being turned into a bookstore. Written by Joel Tan, this 10-min play will be given three different interpretations by three directors. THE VOICES IN THE DANCE HALL Conceptualised/Directed by Darren Ng and Lim Woan Wen Written by Ellison Yuyang Tan A sound and light installation that transforms the former Parliamentary Chamber into a dance hall where it once stood, transporting the audience to a different space and time where they could still hear the patrons of the dance hall speaking through the walls. 3\40 featured \ the arts house turns 10 presented by THE ARTS HOUSE and BOOKSACTUALLY WRITER X WRITER Gallery \ 27 Mar - 6 Apr, various timings \ Free admission Get fired up in this series of discussions as we pair up Singapore writers/poets/playwrights to discuss each other's works. Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.

Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

Building from the much- debated passing of postmodernism, this study focuses on several key postmodern aspects that take a different slant in this movie. The film points out the value of aspects that had lost their meaning within the fiction typical of postmodernism—such as the absence of causality; sincere honesty as opposed to destructive irony; or the loss of faith in Lyotardian meta-narratives. We shall look at the nature of the paradigm shift to link it to the desire to overcome postmodern values through a recovery of Romantic ideas.
