Director’s Message

The Arts House turns 10 this March!

On March 26, 2004, the late war heroine Mrs Elizabeth Choy declared The Arts House open as the guest-of-honour. Her benediction gave us the boost of confidence – the skies did clear up after raining non-stop – and we have been on a mission ever since to fulfil our mandate as “the Singapore Arts House”.

Thousands of performances, readings, exhibitions and film screenings later, and after supporting hundreds of Singapore artists (showcasing them abroad as well: Hong Kong, Tokyo, Moscow, Cape Town), we have finally reached this milestone. Through many ups and downs and various changes – physically, programmatically, and even financially – we have always stayed true to our vision of being an arts centre that is “all-encompassing and that is always relevant to the needs of the communities of Singapore”.

We wanted to mark our 10th anniversary by celebrating our achievements but at the same time, we are also very eager to look forward to the future – to the next decade as a centre for writing, writers and ideas. We approached award-winning director Chong Tze Chien, of theatre company The Finger Players, to conceptualise and direct our anniversary programme. He was game enough to take on the challenge. In fact, he came up with a brilliantly counterintuitive concept: What if The Arts House does not exist any more? What if it has been taken over by a giant bookstore, a dance hall, and heaven forbid, even a hotel?

So in an immersive visual and performance installation show The Next Page (page 02 – 05), which utilises the entire House, we create an alternate, tongue-in-cheek reality in which the The Arts House has disappeared from the scene. Audiences are taken on a romp through an altered history where they are moved to “reminisce” about The Arts House. Sounds warped? Well, you have to experience it yourself. So come celebrate with us and help us turn to The Next Page!

See you at The Arts House!

William Phuan Director The Arts House

The Arts House members) The Next Page Tickets are available at The Arts House celebrates its 10th Anniversary by “disappearing” www.bytes.sg. from the scene!

In a tongue-in-cheek tribute to its 10th year milestone, The Arts House creates an alternative universe/history where a mega bookstore (The Next Page) has taken over the premises from its previous tenants – a dance club and a posh 5-star boutique hotel!

Conceptualised as an immersive visual and performance installation, The Next Page is the anchor show of our 10th celebrations. It invites visitors to view remnants of the dance hall and hotel, which have been “preserved”, while it also offers them the full retail experience of a Singapore bookstore (BooksActually pop-up store).

At night, site-specific performances by the most celebrated thespians of Singapore theatre will regale the audience with a mock historical tour of the site, as they present an alternative history without The Arts House, celebrating its significance and contributions to the arts scene via its “absence”. 40\2 featured \ the arts house turns 10 The Opening By Cake Theatrical Productions and Brian Gothong Tan

The Couple in the Hotel Room Directed by Peter Sau, Rizman Putra and Engie Ho Written by Joel Tan

A couple checks into the hotel on its last day of operation. As they reminisce about their history together, they contemplate the significance of the hotel in their relationship and what it means to them as it is being turned into a bookstore. Written by Joel Tan, this 10-min play will be given three different interpretations by three directors. The Voices in the Dance Hall Conceptualised/Directed by Darren Ng and Lim Woan Wen Written by Ellison Yuyang Tan

Colloquially known as the Oscars, the origins of the nickname are unclear. One commonly cited story gives credit to then Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, who is said to have remarked that the trophy resembled her Uncle Oscar. Regardless of how it started, the moniker stuck, and the Academy Awards officially adopted the nickname in 1939.

Co-presented by The Arts House and Singapore Association of Mental Health RAINBOW VOICES: THE EXHIBITION 19 Feb - 14 Mar, 10am - 10pm \ Free admission

Rainbow Voices showcases the written works of beneficiaries of the Singapore Association of Mental Health (SAMH), following a series of writing workshops conducted by poet Cyril Wong from June to November 2013.

These works reveal the intimate hearts and minds of participants suffering from mental illness and struggling heroically to find a voice and make sense of their lives. They were encouraged to articulate their hopes and dreams, as well as reminisce poignantly about their former selves, in writings that range from being emotionally plainspoken to lyrical and surreal.

These voices demonstrate that people with mental illness should not have to be disregarded, misunderstood or stigmatised. They have their own ways of seeing and communicating what they feel.

This exhibition is held in conjunction with the launch of Rainbow Voices, an anthology of creative writings by beneficiaries of SAMH, compiled and edited by Cyril Wong.

The Arts House Visual Arts Scheme supports emerging Singapore visual artists as well as exhibitions that raise awareness of social causes. Selected proposals are given free exhibition space at the Print Gallery. Please email your proposals to [email protected]
