Zipper/Interfacing Basics Taught by Susan Treloar Take the fear out of sewing with zippers. Learn how to sew 6 different zipper techniques using a variety of fabrics. You will sew samples of a separating zipper in fleece (like a jacket), a center lapped zipper (as in the back of a pillow), a lapped zipper in a curved seam (like the side seam of a skirt), an invisible zipper (as in a dress matching the waist seams), a mock fly zipper (like a pair of pants), and faced shaped zippers (as used in pockets). Learn which interfacings work with which different fabrics and how they support the zipper. * Requirement – Intermediate through Advanced *Instructor will supply kit with pre-cut fabric samples and interfacing. Price included in class fee. Required Supplies: • Your sewing machine – in working order with the manual and all the parts - Clean and oil your machine before class • A zipper foot and an all-purpose foot • New machine needle(s) • Basic sewing basket supplies: Straight pins, seam ripper, Paper & Fabric scissors, Small ruler • Thread – any color – we are sewing samples • Chalk wheel and/or Chalk marker • Fine tip Sharpie Marker • Zippers: 6 total • (1) 12” separating sport zipper (like used in a jacket) • (3) 7” nylon zippers (used in Center Lapped, Lapped, and Faced Shape applications) • (1) 5” medium wt. metal zipper (used in Mock Fly application like on the front of trousers) • (1) 12” invisible zipper (like used in the back of a dress) • Optional Supplies: • Small craft iron and ironing mat • Power strip(s) • Extension cords • Teflon Pressing Sheet • Pressing Ham • Wooden Clapper • Camera – you will need a camera if you want to record all of the steps All materials may be purchased at Pacific Fabrics with a 10% discount.
