Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

PAUL YOUNG in the Middle of the 1980S, Paul Young Became One Of
PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him. -

Robert C. Allen quoted an 1890s letter from the first burlesque star of the American stage, Lydia Thompson in Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (1991): “[B]urlesque as she knew it ‘has been retired for a time,’ its glories now ‘merely memories of the stage.’”1 In 1931, Bernard Sobel opined in Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days, “Alas! You will never get a chance to see one of the real burlesque shows again. They are gone forever…”2 In 1938, The Billboard published an editorial that began, “On every hand the cry is ‘Burlesque is dead.’”3 In fact, burlesque had been declared dead so often that editorials began popping up insisting it could be revived, as Joe Schoenfeld’s 1943 op-ed in Variety did: “[It] may be in a state of putrefaction, but it is a lusty and kicking decomposition.”4 It is this “lusty and kicking decomposition” which characterizes the published history of burlesque. Since its modern inception in the late nineteenth century, American burlesque has both been framed and framed itself within this narrative of degeneration. -

Skegness Rock & Blues Festival 2020
Overview of The Great British Rock & Blues Festival at Butlins, Skegness - January 2020 The weather was kind and the stages were set for yet another Great British Rock & Blues Festival in the Butlins resort at Skegness, Lincolnshire. Friday There is always a certain ‘buzz’ on a Friday afternoon in the Skyline Pavilion, where the Introducing Stage is located and today was no exception. The highlights for me were ‘Will Wilde’, who opened the festival with a harmonica driven blues rock performance, exuding a great deal of excited energy which certainly rubbed off on the audience. Also, the more traditional end of the blues spectrum with ‘Redfish’, the Cumbrian based masters of their art, with rhythm & blues at its best. One of the tightest bands I’ve seen with the added interest of the eccentric but brilliant keyboard player. A great sound and a great performance. Will Wilde Redfish As the evening approached, it was time to hit the main stages. First for me was ‘Johnnie ’Guitar’ Williamson & Blue Swamp’ in Centre Stage, or the Blues Stage. No stranger to the festival, Johnnie has played as Blue Swamp previously, in a different form. A good opener for the evening Johnnie ’Guitar’ Williamson & Blue Swamp One of my favourite bands ‘Catfish’, were playing on the new Blues Matters Stage in Hotshots. I had mixed feelings about the venue, which is the bowling alley and it proved just not big enough to accommodate the large number of Catfish fans. I did finally manage to get in for the last few numbers and Catfish did not disappoint. -

Atomic Rooster Atomic Rooster are an English progressive rock band, originally formed by members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, organist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer, in 1969; original lineup of Vincent Crane (organ), Nick Graham (bass), and Carl Palmer (drums). Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K. in June 1970, after which Graham and Palmer left the group. Crane maintained the name and recruited guitarist/singer John Du Cann and drummer Paul Hammond for the second album, Death Walks Behind You, which hit number 12 in the U.K., where it featured the number 11 single "Tomorrow Night," and number 90 in the U.S. Pete French of Cactus assisted on the third album, In Hearing Of, which featured the number-four U.K. single "The Devil's Answer" and reached number 18 in England and number 167 in America. Then the group split up again, and again Crane assembled a new Atomic Rooster, this time featuring singer Chris Farlowe, guitarist Steve Bolton, bassist Bill Smith, and drummer Rick Parnell. Made in England reached number 149 in the U.S. in 1972, but the group had split again by 1974. Throughout their history, keyboardist Vincent Crane was the only constant member, and wrote the majority of their material. Their history is defined by two periods: the early-mid-1970s and the early 1980s.
