OUR OPINION Remembering isn’t enough

aying homage to America’s war dead once a year is admirable, but not near- P ly enough to truly honor their memory — or the nation for which they gave all. The fallen — and we ourselves — deserve more. What’s needed is to know what was behind their sacrifice, and act accordingly. Keep alive the values for which they fought, and not for the sake of mere formal- ity. It is because of their sacrifice that America is still a living, breathing thing. But as such it requires constant attention, or in Jefferson’s words, “eternal vigilance.” That means year-round care and then some.

Mother’s Day in White Springs From staff reports Citizens of White Springs packed the Telford House recently for the Third Annual Mother’s Day Brunch sponsored by Brenda Gipson of the Adams Country Store and the White Springs Special Events Committee. The theme was, “Bloom where you are Planted.” Entertainment was provided by White Springs School board member Johnny Bullard, Southside Idol’s 2018 winner Brittany Powell, and models showcasing a variety of clothing from Haven Hospice of Lake City. The keynote presentation was delivered by Brenda Gipson. Gipson used four plant types, a rose, a hibis- cus, sago palm and lantana to encourage women to make genuine connections with others, be supportive, and bloom where you are planted. Gipson said that just as plants require the proper main- tenance for optimum existence, so do women and the nurturing support they provide and receives afford them to bloom into their full potential.

For the past three decades, Frank Armijo has risked life and limb on a daily basis as a firefighter. In less than two months all that will come to an end. After working more than 33 years as a Lake City fire- fighter, Armijo plans to retire July 1. Armijo, 53, started his career as a firefighter in Columbia County as a vol- unteer in 1982 with the Pinemount Volunteer Fire Department when he was a teenager. He began working for the Lake City Fire Department in 1985. Armijo served as the Lake City Fire Department assistant fire chief from 2006-2013 and he’s been the fire chief since 2013. “You know when it’s time to retire and it’s just time to enjoy my life while I’m still TONY BRITT/Lake City Reporter young,” he said. “I’m blessed that I can retire at my age from the fire service while ‘I’m going to I’m still young.” Eligible to retire as a miss working firefighter last year, Armijo with decided to continue to work for another year. members of “I’m going to miss help- ing the citizens of the city the re and county when I retire,” department.’ he said. “I’m going to miss working with members of the fire department.” During his tenure as a Armijo moved to Lake City local firefighter, Armijo has in 1971 from Los Angeles, seen improvements in the Calif., as a youngster.
