Atomic Roosteratomic Rooster Are an English Progressive Rock Band, Originally Formed by Members of the Crazy World of Arthur Atomic Rooster Atomic Rooster are an English progressive rock band, originally formed by members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, organist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer, in 1969; original lineup of Vincent Crane (organ), Nick Graham (bass), and Carl Palmer (drums). Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K. in June 1970, after which Graham and Palmer left the group. Crane maintained the name and recruited guitarist/singer John Du Cann and drummer Paul Hammond for the second album, Death Walks Behind You, which hit number 12 in the U.K., where it featured the number 11 single "Tomorrow Night," and number 90 in the U.S. Pete French of Cactus assisted on the third album, In Hearing Of, which featured the number-four U.K. single "The Devil's Answer" and reached number 18 in England and number 167 in America. Then the group split up again, and again Crane assembled a new Atomic Rooster, this time featuring singer Chris Farlowe, guitarist Steve Bolton, bassist Bill Smith, and drummer Rick Parnell. Made in England reached number 149 in the U.S. in 1972, but the group had split again by 1974. Throughout their history, keyboardist Vincent Crane was the only constant member, and wrote the majority of their material. Their history is defined by two periods: the early-mid-1970s and the early 1980s. The band went through radical style changes, but they are best known for the hard, progressive rock sound of their hit singles, "Tomorrow Night" (UK No. 11) and "The Devil's Answer" (UK No. 4), both in 1971. Crane fronted lineups of Atomic Rooster until their last dates, in Germany, in 1983, before taking up with Dexys Midnight Runners in 1983. In 1989, he committed suicide. .

Classical music, hard rock and jazz were the dominating influences in the music created by ELP. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer made up the British trio, but it found its origins at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Emerson and Lake, who were looking for projects outside their current bands, worked together and found their styles were “compatible and complementary.” Music impresario Robert Stigwood suggested that they add Carl Palmer as their drummer.

  • PAUL YOUNG in the Middle of the 1980S, Paul Young Became One Of
PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him.

  • Immediate Records
Immediate Records In mid-1965, Andrew Loog Oldham was best known as the Rolling Stones’ producer, but his ideas always extended beyond production. In July, he and Tony Calder came up with a brilliant idea to cut the bureaucracy out of the music business. That idea resulted in the creation of a new label, Immediate, which he announced to the world in the August 6th issues of the British trade magazines. New Musical Express had reported that the Rolling Stones might be leaving the London label in the United States. When Billboard reported that for American audiences in the August 21st issue, they added a bit of information about Immediate. Although Immediate did fairly well promoting domestic product and importing singles from small American labels, by the middle of 1966 they had still failed to make it into the American market. However, in June Allen Klein helped to negotiate an agreement with MGM where the American label would release at least two Immediate singles. This was not a satisfactory arrangement for either company and, prior to the release of the label’s first album in the USA, Immediate was in a distribution deal with CBS (Columbia Records). The CBS-distributed singles have the prefix ZS7-, where the 7 indicates a seven-inch record. Their LPs have the prefix of Z12 and, oddly, employ even numbers only. Where they existed, reel-to-reel tapes used the ZQ- prefix, four-track cartridges used the Z14- prefix, and eight-tracks used the Z18- prefix. • Dave Hartl's 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums
Dave Hartl’s 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums It’s time once again to look back and do that annual tradition of picking out the 10 or so most influential albums I heard in the past year. Not the most popular, or even the best, but what made me think the most as a musician. You can always go to http://www.davehartl.com/top10.html and look at other years’ postings. The links there go all the way back to 1998, when I started this with George Tucker. It’s a way of hearing about great music you might otherwise miss. If you want to contribute, please write to [email protected] with your own list and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. This is why I do this! It always gives me some great recommendations for what to listen to that would be off my radar otherwise. So don’t be shy! Last year, Brian Groder, Jack Loughhead, and Kaz Yoshihara gave me some great things to listen to. 1.) John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension: Live at Ronnie Scott’s 2017 saw the farewell American tour of the great guitarist John McLaughlin, who joined up with fellow guitarist Jimmy Herring for an unbelievable 3-set night concluding with pieces from his old Mahavishnu Orchestra days (you can see an entire concert at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWa9F4UBQQ&t=19s, highly recommended!). This CD was recorded in London with McLaughlin’s working band of the last decade, the 4th Dimension, about 7 months ahead of the aforementioned American tour, but it shows a microcosm of that concept, opening with 1971’s Meeting of the Spirits and working through pieces showcasing the amazing drummer Ranjit Barot and his Indian classical influences, bassist Etienne M’Bappé’s multilevel constructions, and Gary Husband’s otherworldly synth textures, blowout chops, and energetic drumming.
