Wednesday 3rd February 2021 Year 3! Good Morning Year 3 Thanks for all of the awesome work you sent in this week so far! We are all so impressed! It’s Joe Wicks time again - Have a go if you feel like it! We really enjoyed reading them! LO: I can plan a story Today we are going to finish the story... The storm passed and the animals knew that the terrible waves had carried them far, far away. They thought of their homes and how much they missed them. As they sailed on they all felt very lost on the big blue sea. A Dodo watched from his Island as the boat and its animals came into view. ‘Hello there!’ He called to them as they sailed closer. ‘We’re lost!’ shouted the Polar Bear to the Dodo. ‘We’ve sailed too far and now we want to go home.’ ‘Well of course you can go home,’ said the Dodo ‘Really?’ said the animals together. ‘When?’ ‘You can go home when the trees grow back and when the ice returns and when the cities stop getting bigger and when the hunting stops.’ ‘Oh’ said the Orangutan thoughtfully. ‘And when will that be?’ asked the Polar Bear. ‘I don’t know,’ said the Dodo. ‘Let’s see what tomorrow brings.’ What do you think the message of the story is? Why do you think the author chose those particular animals? Write down your thoughts on a piece of paper The Book’s Message -The author chose the Polar Bear, Panda, Orangutan and Elephant because they are endangered animals. She chose the Dodo because it is extinct animal. -The book is about the impact humans have on wildlife as a result of global warming, deforestation, expanding cities and hunting. -It encourages us to protect the lives and homes of various animals in the world. -At the end of the book, the animals have no choice but to sit and wait - "Let's see what tomorrow brings", the little Dodo says. This is suggesting that if we do not do something soon the four animals in the book will become extinct like the Dodo. There are 4 endangered animals in the story (Polar Bear, Panda, Orangutan, Elephant) You are going to rewrite the story tomorrow with 4 different endangered animals. So today we are going to plan the story. We are going to plan which animals we are going to use. Story Planning Choose 4 endangered animals that you are going to include in your story Endangered means seriously at risk of extinction Here are some examples of Endangered animals you could choose Mountain Gorilla, Red Squirrel, Sea Turtle, Snow Leopard, Rhino, Red Panda, Chimpanzee, Galápagos Penguin, Cheetah, Fruit Bat, Reticulated giraffe. Videos to help you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN_qy0YPURA (link for video of top 10 animals close to extinction) https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks2-ks3-guyanas-endangered-animals/zmrqpg8 You also need to decide on your fifth animal. This is an animal that is an Extinct Animal (In the book it is the Dodo) You could choose Woolly Mammoth, Great Auk, Sabre-Toothed Tiger Steller’s Sea Cow, Tasmanian Tiger, West African Black Rhino, Pyrenean Ibex, Dinosaurs. There are more examples on this website https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/general-animals/extinct-animals/ You will need to choose and research your five animals Example: Animal Where they Why are they Put your first live/lived? endangered/Extinct animal here Animal 1 (This is your first endangered animal, Gorilla They live in the African Their forests are being the animal that finds the Rainforest (So this is cleared and they are boat). where your story starts) hunted for food. Animal 2 (endangered) Animal 3 (endangered) The fifth animal must be an Animal 4 (endangered) extinct animal Animal 5 (Extinct Woolly Mammoth They lived in very cold climates They were hunted for their (this is where your story ends - meat, fur and tusks. Animal) somewhere cold) Animal Where they Why are they live/lived? endangered/extinct Animal 1 (This is your first endangered animal, the animal that finds the boat) Animal 2 (endangered) Animal 3 (endangered) Animal 4 (endangered) Animal 5 (Extinct Animal) If you are struggling to find any information online I have included some information on endangered and extinct animals on the next few slides to help you! Endangered Animals Extinct Animals You will need to save your plan as we will be using it in tomorrow’s lesson to write your story. ☺ Maths This week we are looking at place value and division. Yesterday we were looking at x and ÷ by 10 Today we are looking at x and ÷ by 10 and 100 LO: I can multiply and divide by 10 and 100 Starter How many fives are there in each of these numbers? 60 = there are 12 fives 40 = 80 = 30 = 90 = 25 = 20 = 65 = 15 = 55 = ANSWERS How many fives are there in each of these numbers? 60 = there are 12 fives 40 = there are 8 fives 80 = there are 16 fives 30 = there are 6 fives 90 = there are 18 fives 25 = there are 5 fives 20 = there are 4 fives 65 = there are 13 fives 15 = there are 3 fives 55 = there are 11 fives Draw a Place Value Grid on your piece of paper. Write the number 4 onto your place value grid 4 What is 4 x 10? 4 4 x 10=40 The 4 moves one place to the4 left 4 0 The zero needs to be here as a place holder If we x by 10 we move the digits one place to the left. What do you think will happen if we x by 100. What is 4 x 100? 4 4 x 100 = 400 The digits are moved 2 places to the left when we multiply by 100 4 4 0 0 Don’t forget the 0 place holders What is 7 x 100? 7 What is 7 x 100 = 700 7 7 0 0 When we x by 100 we move the digits 2 places to the left. What do you think will happen if we divide by 100? What is 700 ÷ 100? 7 0 0 700 ÷ 100 = 7 7 0 0 7 What is 600 ÷ 100? 6 0 0 600 ÷ 100 = 6 6 0 0 6 Have a go at these three challenges! Challenge 1 - Multiplying by 10 or 100 Challenge 2 - Dividing by 10 or 100 Challenge 3 - Multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 ANSWERS.
