  • History Society Trip to Prague and Vienna, 2018
History Society trip to Prague and Vienna, 2018 As one of the Trip Officers for the Edinburgh University History Society, Student Ambassador Carmen was responsible for organising a trip to Budapest and Vienna for 40 society members during Innovative Learning Week. While we were only away for 5 days, it felt like ages because we did so much in both cities! – Carmen Day 1: Monday, 19th of February Our flight to Budapest was extremely early – but this meant we got there really early too, giving us plenty of time to get our bearings! While the sky was blue, it was freezing cold as we walked around streets on the Pest side of the city, taking in the amazing views of Liberty Square & Parliament Square. After giving everyone a few hours to have dinner (and a nap after a long day of travelling!), we met up again to see the iconic Hungarian Parliament building light up at night. Here, we were able to get a big group photo, before running off to take some night shots of the stunning view over the River Danube! Day 2: Tuesday, 20th of February On our second day, we walked along the Széchenyi Chain Bridge (covered in snow!) to go across the Danube to Buda Castle. Using our trusty Budapest Cards, we were able to get a free Castle bus that took us outside the building – a lifesaver considering it was a very uphill walk! Some of our group were lucky enough to see the changing of the guard at the Sándor Palace, the residence of the Hungarian President.

  • Vienna Guide
April 22—24, 2015, Vienna, Austria Hotel Park Royal Palace Vienna Guide SIGHTSEEING Vienna is old, Vienna is new… and the sights are so varied: from the magnificent Baroque buildings to “golden” Art Nouveau to the latest architecture. And over 100 museums beckon… ALBERTINA The Albertina has the largest and most valuable graphical collection in the world, including works such as Dürer’s “Hare” and Klimt‘s studies of women. Its latest exhibition presents masterpieces of the Modern era, spanning from Monet to Picasso and Baselitz. As the largest Hapsburg residential palace, the Albertina dominates the southern tip of the Imperial Palace on one of the last remaining fortress walls in Vienna. ANKER CLOCK This clock (built 1911–14) was created by the painter and sculptor Franz von Matsch and is a typical Art Nouveau design. It forms a bridge between the two parts of the Anker Insurance Company building. In the course of 12 hours, 12 historical figures (or pairs of figures) move across the bridge. Every day at noon, the figures parade, each accompanied by music from its era. AUGARTEN PORCELAIN MANUFacTORY Founded in 1718, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory is the second-oldest in Europe. Now as then, porcelain continues to be made and painted by hand. Each piece is thus unique. A tour of the manufactory in the former imperial pleasure palace at Augarten gives visitors an idea of how much love for detail goes into the making of each individual piece. The designs of Augarten have been created in cooperation with notable artists since the manufactory was established.

ReVisions Musicals in Post- Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan Rina Tanaka Published on: Mar 14, 2017 Updated on: Jan 04, 2018 ReVisions Musicals in Post-Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan 1. Introduction The end of the globalization era meant the beginning of new methods, regardless of regional predominance. Today, a new style of performances is coming from non-English-speaking countries even in the genre of musical, which is originally from English-speaking countries. However, it has been overlooked due to the commercial or even mass productive nature of musicals (McMillin 2006, pp. 28- 29), which has been a dominant pattern in musicals for decades[1]. How have musicals been changing in the post-globalization era? This paper analyzes the interactions established between Vienna and Japan by musicals since the 1990s as a possible illustration of the post- global theater. It consists of the following four parts. Section 1 presents two key concepts of this paper, “post-global” and “interweaving cultures in performances” as well as the current situation regarding musicals. Section 2 deals with the short history of musicals in Vienna in the post-war era until the launch of the first successful “Wiener [Viennese]” musical Elisabeth. As Vienna started taking its musical productions to the world, Japan was the first importer of Elisabeth. Section 3 considers two adaptations of Elisabeth in Japan as examples, indicating the reactions of other countries as well as Vienna, including the “re-import” phenomenon. After the great popularity of the Wiener musicals in Japan and the successive adaptations in the world, a new type of co-production developed in Japan.

The Imperial Palace Vienna at a Glance Imperial Palace Vienna Since its creation in the 13th century, the Imperial Palace Vienna has been subject to constant modification. As a consequence, it has be- come a reflection of the many cultural, political, social, and economic developments throughout Austria’s history. Today, the Swiss Yard (Schweizerhof) represents the oldest part of the building complex. It dates back to the time of Emperor Frederick II of the House of Hohenstaufen. Over the centuries, the rectangular palace of the Late Medieval Period was reconstructed, adapted, expanded, and connected to its adjacent buildings until it eventually became the building complex that, today, constitutes the Imperial Palace Vienna. Dreaming of an Imperial Forum, Emperor Franz Joseph I initiated the last large extension in the second half of the 19th century. Ho- wever, his dream never fully came true. Only Maria-Theresien-Squa- re (Maria- Theresien-Platz) with its two world-famous museums, the youngest wing of the Imperial Palace Vienna – New Castle (Neue Burg) – and St. Michael‘s Gate (Michaelertor) with its sumptuous cupola were to be completed. In its present form the Imperial Palace Vienna, which is situated in the heart of the city, covers an area of more than 300,000 m2 and fulfils a wide array of roles. Hofburg Info Center The recently created Hofburg Info Center nestles between the youngest wing of the Imperial Palace Vienna – New Castle (Neue Burg) – Weltmuseum Wien and the Austrian National Library. Its aim is to provide visitors with all the information they need about the institutions located in the area as well as its history.
