Good afternoon and a very happy Easter to you all. We extend a very welcome to our match officials. We also extend a warm welcome to all connected with Rochester United FC. We hope your enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe journey home.

Well we’ve reached our penultimate home game in our debut season in the Southern Counties East League. Where has the season gone? My Dad always told me that as you got older time went quicker, I thought he was daft but his words were true and as I grow older time does indeed go faster.

Well if we look back on the season I’m sure there will be fluctuating feelings. This season was always going to be about consolidation. Everyone connected with “The Rams” had worked very hard for three seasons to gain promo- tion. I know that Ant and his team have worked tirelessly to achieve that goal. That having been achieved they worked even harder to remain where we found ourselves. I remember when the fixtures were published I felt we’d got a tough start, three teams who the previous season had finished in the top 7. Well we started by taking 4 points from those three games, I believe it gave us the impetus to believe we could compete at this level.

If you look at the league table apart from Hollands & Blair and Greenwich Borough at the top and Holmesdale at the bottom anyone can beat anyone. It is all very close. We sit 9th at the moment with 41 points, 10 points below 3rd place Lordswood but also only 13 points above second bottom Croydon. A victory here a defeat there and you can move up and down the table like a youngster playing Snakes and Ladders. It makes it interesting.

One of the problems with only one promotion place is that you can become safe too early and then the games almost become pointless. Some would say that play-offs may be the answer, but at our level it’s difficult to have play-offs. Promotion is not straightforward. There are ground gradings to start with and then you never know where you’ll be put. Take ourselves last season. We win promotion from the CCL Division One and should have been playing now in CCL Premier Division but because of relegation and such like the FA Leagues Committee moved us to SCEFL. Oh well, we’ll just have to grin and bear it.

I’ve enjoyed this season. Meeting new people, visiting new grounds plus we’ve got the Croydon Derby. I look for- ward to next year as it’s no longer a step into the dark and we know we can compete.

Enjoy the game, get behind your team and for “The Rams Army” see you on 16th April for our last home game this term.

Good Afternoon All,

Welcome to today’s game against Rochester United. May I take this opportunity to welcome all our guest’s this afternoon. Firstly the match official’s and all those connected with Rochester. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have safe return trips home this evening.

I am writing these notes before our game at Erith on Tuesday evening, hopefully we will have stopped the rot after two successive defeats. In our last home game we were blown away by a very good Greenwich side; 6-0 was harsh on us as it seemed everything they hit went in. We had chances but failed to take any. They had done their homework on us and to be fair to them gave us a lot of respect by setting up to stop our threats. The game plan they had worked very well and that extra bit of quality they had across the park definitely showed on the day. I am sure they will go onto win this league, although we still have to go down there and hopefully give a better account of ourselves. Prior to that game we had been on a good run and we had hoped to get back to winning ways with the long trip to Deal. Failure to take our chances, especially first half meant we ended up losing the game. A very poor game of football on a difficult pitch and I have to say some questionable decision’s by the man in the middle meant a long trip was wasted and we left with nothing, losing 2-0.

I have to apologise for my ill-discipline that day, I can on occasions get too involved with the game, that being said some of the decisions for both teams were very questionable, perhaps my questioning of him that day were a bit too loud and this led me to being removed from the technical area.

We will go again on Tuesday against Erith Town, a side we haven’t played yet hoping to return to winning ways, we really want to finish the season as strong as possible, a top 8 finish is achievable and if that happens we will have given a very good account in our maiden season in this division.

I hope you all enjoy the game, see you in bar. Cheers.

23/03/2016 08:49 FIXTURES & RESULTS SEASON 2015/16 MATCH REPORT

SOUTHERN COUNTIES EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE Tuesday 8th March 2016, Homelands Stadium. ASHFORD UNITED 3 AFC CROYDON ATHLETIC 4

AFC Croydon Athletic stretched their unbeaten run to 5 games with an impressive and exciting victory at promo- tion chasing Ashford United. The game kicked off on a cold wet evening and the home side looked determined to make up ground on the clubs above them. On 12 minutes veteran striker Shaun Welford had a chance but Dan Burnett thwarted him. The Rams went up the other end and Jack Higgins set up Raheem Sterling-Parker but his shot was saved. Two minutes later Welford struck the post but the ball rebounded to Burnett. The Rams then had a chance when Bradley Wilson found Lee Jansen but the “nuts & bolts” keeper, Kamurasi, was quickly off his line to thwart him. Higgins cleared off the line but on 26 minutes Ryan Palmer was released down the middle and fired past Burnett. Two minutes later he repeated the trick and it was 2-0. The home side had chances to increase their advantage but failed to take them.

The second half began with the home side looking to kill of the game. However on 51 minutes Tony Martin was put in the clear his shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line. The Rams had a great chance to get back in the game when Wilson was tripped in the area and a penalty was awarded. Unfortunately the usually reliable Sterling-Parker struck his kick too high and he hit the bar. On the hour Higgins again cleared a Welford shot of the line. Then Palmer had a chance but first Burnett saved and then he fired over the bar. Then on 64 minutes the Rams were back in the game. Tony Martin put in a free kick to the back post where Danny Cumber met it and headed home. The home side looked nervous and on 69 minutes another Martin free kick was met by Cumber, who head- ed across goal were Higgins headed home. Three minutes later and Haydn Mclean-Hayles released Sterling-Parker who rounded Kamurasi and scored. Was the comeback complete? Unfortunately no, after hesitation by Burnett the ball was squared for Welford to equalise. It was now anyone’s game. On 79 minutes Sterling-Parker raced into the area, poked the ball past Kamurasi who fell the striker. Sterling-Parker bravely took it and this scored. Ashford looked for an equaliser but the Rams held out and secured an excellent result, which moved them up to sixth.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE Saturday 12th March 2016, Mayfield Road. AFC CROYDON ATHLETIC 0 GREENWICH BOROUGH 6

AFC Croydon Athletic suffered their heaviest home defeat since their formation against leaders Greenwich Bor- ough. Having just recorded a fine victory at Ashford and being on a 5 game unbeaten run confidence was high. Unfortunately, it has to be said, they were second best in all areas of the pitch. Greenwich are a good side and have quality all over the pitch but the Rams defence, which recently, has been tight were off their game and mistakes lead to some of the goals.

The Rams started brightly and on 8 minutes Louis Blake had a shot blocked but that was as good as it got. On 15 minutes Ryan Dolby was left free and he duly scored. Within two minutes the visitors made it two when Tom Youngs was again left free in the area to convert. On 23 minutes it was three. When the referee awarded a gener- ous penalty after he decided Youngs had been fouled when it looked more like a fifty-fifty collision. Michael power fired it home. The visitors coasted through the rest of the half.

Having comeback from two goals down at Ashford the “Rams Army” wondered if they could do it again, the an- swer was no. On 59 minutes Power was left free at a corner and he smashed it home. Both sides made changes but the strength of the Greenwich bench was shown when they brought on Mohammed Eisa, their top scorer with 20+ goals. Indeed, immediately Dolby set him up and he duly scored. On 75 minutes another sub Cisco Mbela made it six. Bradley Wilson did have a shot on target but the Rams were well beaten.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE Saturday 19th March 2016, The Charles Ground. DEAL TOWN 2 AFC CROYDON ATHLETIC 0

Still smarting from their thrashing by Greenwich Borough the Rams made their longest journey to play Deal Town. The reverse fixture had been a drab affair and this one wasn’t much better. It started brightly for Croydon. Seven minutes in, a Tony Martin corner found an unmarked Danny Cumber but his header flew over the bar. On 16 minutes Tony Martin had a shot saved and on 27 minutes Fred Fleming had a chance but shot weakly. The Rams defence looked solid but on 30 minutes Dan Burnett made a fine flying save to deny Deal a goal. Inconsistent refereeing was annoying Croydon and Jack Higgins got booked. Tony Martin sent in a free kick but Cumber was denied by the keeper. Just before the break Rene Rivera hit the post for Deal.

The second half started with the Rams looking for the lead Cumber was again denied by the keeper while Jordan Martin had a header from his brother’s corner cleared off the line. He was then denied by the keeper. The game turned on 73 minutes, the referee ignored a blatant hand ball but when Rivera was tripped gave a penalty. Rivera duly converted. Just five minutes later a long ball down the channel found bustling forward Connor Coyne, who beat Fleming and scored just inside the far post. Try as they might the Rams couldn’t respond and in the end it finished 2-0.

JACK OWEN

Jack Owen leads his team of officials in today’s game against Rochester United. His first game was just over 11 years ago on 5th March 2005 and he has been progressing through the ranks since then. Jack originally hails from Liverpool and his biggest game to date was one he took charge of at Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground. That said, his father is a keen Evertonian so Jack had no choice but to follow in his footsteps.

His ambition as a referee would be to go as high as possible through the ranks and make it onto the football league; he also recognises that the pinnacle for every referee must be to take charge of the FA Cup Final.

When Jack isn’t in black he works as a Transport Planner/Engineer.

Grant-McLellan Cup, Quarter-Final - AFC Croydon Athletic 5 South Park 1

In a game played at Colliers Wood FC, the Young Rams eased their way passed title rivals South Park with a com- fortable win on the night. With several players left out due to injuries ahead of the Surrey FA Youth Cup Final the game started slowly but once they got into their stride they dominated the game. The win puts them just a point behind the sides at the top of the table with games in hand.
