Erith Town Football Club – A Brief History

Formed in 1959 as Woolwich Town, the club initially competed in the London Metropolitan Sunday League, winning the Senior Section Championship in 1965-66, 1970-71 and 1974-75.

The club briefly changed their name to Woolwich Heathway but reverted back within a year and in 1991 the club made the switch to Saturday football when they joined the London Spartan League Division Two. They also moved from Woolwich Barracks Stadium to share with Greenwich Borough FC.

Despite finishing 9th the club went up to Division One as a result of a re-structure in 1992-93. In 1994-95 the Dockers finished as runners-up in the London Intermediate Cup and London Spartan League Intermediate Cup.

The summer of 1995 saw the club attain senior status and promotion to the London Spartan League Premier Division. In October of 1995 the club moved from Greenwich to Erith Stadium.

In March 1996 the club were given permission to cross the pyramid and tendered their resignation to the Spartan League to join the Kent League for 1996-97. They also played in the FA Vase for the first time, losing 4-0 at home to Lewes in the first qualifying round.

From June 1997 the club reflected their new location by changing name to Erith Town and made their bow in the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Harlow Town in the 1997-98 season.

The following season the Dockers moved back to Greenwich Borough for a year while extensive building work took place at the Stadium. The return to Erith in 1999-2000 saw them attain seventh place in the League and a place in the London Senior Cup Final under manager Micky Watts.

John Adams took over from Watts in 2002-03 and over the next few years the club had several changes of manager before Mark Tompkins took the reins following a poor start to 2006-07.

‘Tommo’ guided the club to their most successful season in 2007-08, finishing fifth in the League and lifting the Kent League Cup with a 1-0 win over favourites Hythe Town at Folkestone Invicta.

Tompkins resigned on the eve of 2008-09 and his place was taken by Thamesmead Town reserve team manager Steve O’Boyle who took the team back to the League Cup Final where they lost 3-1 on penalties to Croydon following a 1-1 draw at Welling United.

The club also spent that season sharing at Thamesmead’s Bayliss Avenue, but returned to Erith Stadium after one campaign.

Erith Town Football Club – A Brief History – continued

O’Boyle resigned in October of 2010 and was replaced by his assistant Tony Russell. He took the club to the top of the table in February but League form dropped off as the Dockers finished mid-table. Success did come however as the club lifted the Kent Senior Trophy for the first time with a 3-1 win over Tunbridge Wells in the Final at Welling.

Having achieved a new best of fourth the following season, Russell departed for neighbours VCD Athletic. With Erith Town top of the league in November 2012 and after a brief spell with James Collins in charge, Mark Tompkins returned to take the Dockers to a new personal best of third spot.

Tommo repeated the feat in 2013-14 before departing and a turbulent 2014-15 saw three managers and a Houdini-style escape from relegation under Martin and Joe Ford. Seven points adrift with three games remaining, the father and son team saw their young side win the final three games and climb off the foot of the table.

Two further seasons of struggle followed before Mark Deveney took over the club in the summer of 2017, immediately appointing former owner Albert Putnam as President for his work as player, manager and Chairman for over 50 years with the club.

After five seasons ground-sharing at Cray Valley and VCD Athletic, the club have returned to Erith Stadium for the 2018-19 season.

Interesting fact: Bedfont played Erith Town in the Final of the London Senior Cup back in 1999-2000. The match result was Bedfont 5 – 1 Erith Town.

Meet The Players: Club captain – Cameron Daniel-Murphy

Age: 27. Position: Central Midfield. Fun fact: Cameron’s triceps have ripped 2 shirts so far this season.

Cameron has started the season a bit touch-and-go so far. We all know he has a phobia of commitment to playing more than 2 games in a row, but injuries have also plagued his game time this term.

This Day in Football History:

13 October 1977 - Di Natale's Natale

On 13 October 1977, striker Antonio Di Natale was born in Naples. He went on to become one of Italy's top scorers, leading Serie A in back-to-back seasons.

He started his professional career in 1996 with Empoli, at that time in Serie B, but made only one appearance in that first season, then spent the next two on loan. In 1999, he finally broke into Empoli's first team, making 30 appearances in all competitions and scoring seven goals. His best season there was 2001-02, when his 16 league goals helped them get promoted to Serie A and earned Di Natale his first cap with Italy.

After the 2003-04 season, with Empoli relegated back to Serie B, he stayed in the top flight by moving to Udinese and immediately helped them to a fourth-place finish. His breakout season came in 2009-10, when he scored 29 goals to claim the Capocannoniere and the 2010 Italian Footballer of the Year award. He claimed the scoring title a second time in 2010-11 with 28 goals.

He remained with Udinese until his retirement in 2016, scoring a total of 227 goals in 446 appearances for the club.

From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Erith Town enjoy their short stay with us.

Since my last notes, we have travelled a fair few miles and competed in 3 different competitions in 7 days. A mixed bag of performances and results. Two tough Tuesday night trips to Horley and Hillingdon saw us bow out of 2 cup competitions, good 2nd half performances but after slow starts we ultimately went out marginally in both, a penalty loss at Horley and a last minute winner for Hillingdon.

Sandwiched in between, was a disciplined league performance at Godalming in poor conditions. Despite a wobble midway through the first half we played out a comfortable 2nd half to get another clean sheet and 3 points. Over the course of our week on the road, all the fit members of the squad played their part, made a massive effort to get to the games and it was a good chance for us to have a look at everyone.

Today will be, by far, our toughest test of the season. Erith have despatched decent Combined Counties sides in both FA competitions and we are under no illusions that we will have to be at our best to get through to the Second Round Proper. I have no doubt that we will all be giving it everything we have to try and make that happen.

I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support.

Adam.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted in the 1974 Derby County Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook. Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of programmes collected throughout the years. He is an iconic figure for me - some of my first memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself. Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search is on for his history and collecting programmes.

Tony Candland.
