  • Who Killed the Fa Cup?
WHO KILLED THE FA CUP? IS THIS FOOTBALL’S GREATEST WHODUNIT? WE ARE TOLD THE FA CUP IS DEAD, BUT WHO ARE THE MAIN SUSPECTS AND WHICH ONE IS GUILTY? JOE CARROLL TURNS DETECTIVE TO FIND OUT. United and Arsenal have both won it a record 12 times. It’s a competition that has developed into a national treasure and holds a place in the hearts of English football fans. So, what exactly is the role of the FA in the demise of its very own showcase event? Since the inception of the Premier League, the FA has exerted less control over English football. While it does still have veto power over the appointments at the top of the Premier League hierarchy, the top 20 English clubs have autonomy from the FA to negotiate their own, very lucrative broadcasting deals. As such, the FA is seen to be playing a more custodial role at the top of English football’s professional tier. They act as mere guardians of the sport, while the Premier League dream up and enforce new ideas and changes on the league front. As such, the FA clings on to one of its few monuments of power: the FA Cup. Financially, the competition simply cannot compete. 2016 Premier League winners Leicester City raked in more than £24million for their once in a lifetime achievement. In contrast, Manchester United pocketed just £1.8million for beating Crystal Palace in last year’s FA Cup final. Aston Villa earned £1.2million for finishing dead last in the Premier League. In monetary terms, the FA Cup simply isn’t worth a lot of club’s efforts, at least not those earning millions just for competing in the Premier League (and that’s before we consider their share of broadcasting rights).

The match will be the 91st time the Shield has been contested. The only match ever to go to a replay was the very first - in 1908. No club has a Shield pedigree like Manchester United. They were its first winners and have now clocked up a record 15 successes. They have shared the Shield an additional four times and have featured in a total of 28 contests. Wigan Athletic, by contrast, were a non-League club until 1978 and are playing the first Shield match in their 81-year history. The FA Charity Shield, its name until 2002, evolved from the Sheriff of London Shield - an annual fixture between the leading professional and amateur clubs of the time.

  • The Football Association Challenge the Cup Final
The Football Association Challenge The Cup Final Cup Final Facts • The match is widely known as just the Cup Final. • It is the last match in the Football Association (FA) Challenge Cup. • It has about 86 000 spectators and millions of TV viewers. • The trophy (winner’s cup) is only on loan to the winning side. • It is the oldest cup competition in the world, first played in the 1871 - 72 season. Who Can Enter? The Challenge Cup competition is open to any club in the top ten levels of the English Football League. Once clubs have registered to play, the tournament is organised into 12 randomly drawn rounds, followed by the semi-finals and finals. The higher ranked teams join the competition in later rounds when some of the lower ranked teams have been knocked out. What Do the Winners Receive? The winners of the final match receive the Football Association Cup, the FA Cup. It comes in three parts; the base, the cup and a lid. Over the years, there have been two designs of trophy and five cups have been made. The first cup, known as the ‘little tin idol’, was stolen in 1895 and never returned. An exact replica was made and used until 1910. From 1911, a new design was made. In 1992, another copy was made as the cup was wearing out from being handled, and another replacement was made in 2014. The cup is presented at the end of the match, giving the engraver just five minutes to engrave the winning team on the silver band on the base.

FA YOUTH CUP FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING PORTISHEAD TOWN VS THURSDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 2020 Kick Off 19.00 p.m. A WELCOME TO TRURO CITY We would like to welcome all players, staff and supporters of Truro City to Bristol Road. Truro City U18 have only just been reformed, with the aim for the Truro Under 18’s to produce players for the first team. The Portishead Town Under 18's competed in the 2019-20 Western Counties Floodlight League North Division, before it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Good luck to both teams in the FA Youth cup tonight. 0800 030 4461 [email protected] FA YOUTH CUP HISTORY The Football Association Youth Challenge Cup is an English football competition run by The Football Association for under-18 sides. Only those players between the age of 15 and 18 on 31 August of the current season are eligible to take part. It is dominated by the youth sides of professional teams, mostly from the Premier League, but attracts over 400 entrants from throughout the country. At the end of the Second World War the FA organised a Youth Championship for County Associations considering it the best way to stimulate the game among those youngsters not yet old enough to play senior football. The matches did not attract large crowds but outstanding players were selected for Youth Internationals and thousands were given the chance to play in a national contest for the first time. In 1951 it was realised that a competition for clubs would probably have a wider appeal.
