Conservation of the Shahi Hammam
AGA KHAN TRUST FOR CULTURE AGA KHAN CULTURAL SERVICE -PAKISTAN CONSERVATION OF THE SHAHI HAMMAM 1 Above: The main hall of the Hammam, after conservation INTRODUCTION Below: The western facade of the Hammam, after conservation The Walled City of Lahore is famous for several historic monuments including the Lahore Fort - a World Heritage site, the Badshahi and Wazir Khan mosques. Close to 2,000 buildings within the Walled City display a range of architectural features that mark Lahore’s centuries old cultural landscape. A majority of these buildings and the mohallas in which they are situated form a unique heritage footprint. In July 2013, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and its country affiliate the Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan (AKCS-P), in partnership with the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), commenced the conservation of the Shahi Hammam – a17th century Mughal period public bathhouse. BACKGROUND In 2007, the Trust and the Government of Punjab signed a public-private partnership framework agreement, which came to an end in 2012. Subsequent engagement of the Trust has been on the basis of a series of MoUs with WCLA. To date, the Trust has provided technical assistance for urban rehabilitation in a section of the Walled City - known as the Pilot Urban Rehabilitation and Infrastructure Improvement (Shahi Guzargah/ Royal Trail) Project. 2 In 2012, WCLA undertook a number of steps to facilitate the conservation of the Shahi Hammam. All commercial encroachments from the premises of the Hammam and its surrounding areas were removed through financial compensation to the traders. Following this, the Hammam’s northern façade was consolidated and a retaining wall was constructed to avoid future encroachments from taking place. -

Identification of Threats and Review of the Existing Structures of Wah Gardens for the Prioritization of Treatment Recommendations Ramla Toor*, Saima Gulzar and Faiqa Khilat School of Architecture and Planning, University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan Abstract Wah Gardens’ historic fabric and physical environment including their cultural setting, buildings, water landscaped gardens, and artistic creations reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Mughal period. Wah Gardens that once depicted the prospects of regality and magnificence lie in ruins presently due to the climatic conditions, negligence of the concerned authorities and anthropogenic vandalism.
