NOTICE: UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE Dear Students: It is our hope that the COVID-19 public health risk will be adequately under control for some of our classes to be held in face-to-face mode in the coming academic year. Please contact your department to determine if you will have face-to-face sessions in the coming semester. There is a list of email addresses for the Deans and HODs in Appendix B A dress code or uniform is typical for academic programmes that culminate in professional qualifications. Institutions of higher education that provide professional qualification all have expectations for students to be attired in a manner consistent with the profession for which they are preparing. As part of our culture at The Mico, we require adherence to a dress code that recognises the relatively conservative nature of the teaching profession in our context. The dress code describes how students are expected to be attired for classes, Practicum and other field work, as well as official functions of The Mico. This communiqué is focused on requirements for face-to-face activities, but be reminded that the guidelines for online interaction remain. Your entire experience here is part of your professional development. Employees of The Mico reserve the right, therefore, to respectfully request that clients be appropriately attired to access facilities and services of the institution. GENERAL DRESS CODE Our mode of dress contributes to an image of a person who is professional, respectful and respectable, worthy of the charge of young, impressionable individuals. We therefore require that for all academic, administrative and professional interactions of The Mico – whether on the campus or not – students observe the guidelines in the Undergraduate Student Handbook section on Personal Appearance and Dress Code (pg 67 of the 2017-2020 edition that is still in force). In addition, should clothing have logos, slogans, etc., these are not to bear words or images that are inappropriate to the education context, promote discrimination or are otherwise offensive to fellow members of the Mico community. Evening/Part Time Students Uniforms are primarily for undergraduate day students, recognizing that many evening students are coming directly from work and are dressed as appropriate for their workplace. Those not in work attire are to abide by the Handbook’s dress code. Mico-Branded Non-Uniform Attire Faculty shirts, Department shirts and branded sportswear are not part of the official uniform and may only be worn on designated days or for specific occasions (such as Faculty Thursdays, PE classes, sports events, field trips, Open House) Personal Protective Equipment and Specialization-specific attire, e.g. for Science, Family and Consumer Science and Industrial Technology, are to be worn in accordance with the guidelines of the academic department and only for the purposes and sessions so designated. 2 MALE STUDENTS ◘ dress pants, dark colour, solid/no patterns, not form-fitting ◘ button front dress shirt or guayabera (bush jacket), white or pastel, long or short sleeve, solid colour or subtle pattern; with undershirt if fabric is thin ◘ neck tie: business style in coordinating colour ◘ dark socks with black or dark brown shoes (not “sneakers”) For Official Functions (See Fig. 1) ◘ solid black dress pants, black belt ◘ gold, long sleeved, buttoned front dress shirt ◘ The Mico tie ◘ optional black blazer (single-breasted, 2-button, notch lapel, welt or flap pocket) ◘ NOTE this uniform may also be worn on Practicum FEMALE STUDENTS First to Third Year Female Students Fig. 1 Uniform for Official ◘ dresses in mustard or royal blue Functions and Practicum Giorgio linen ◘ black-belted or buttoned style (See Fig. 2) ◘ dress no shorter than knee length ◘ short sleeve1 Final Year Female Students ◘ previous uniform in the styles shown in Appendix A are to be worn ONLY by final (4th) year female students.
