B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

The Red Sneakers Effect: Inferring Status and Competence from Signals of Nonconformity SILVIA BELLEZZA FRANCESCA GINO ANAT KEINAN This research examines how people react to nonconforming behaviors, such as entering a luxury boutique wearing gym clothes rather than an elegant outfit or wearing red sneakers in a professional setting. Nonconforming behaviors, as costly and visible signals, can act as a particular form of conspicuous consumption and lead to positive inferences of status and competence in the eyes of others. A series of studies demonstrates that people confer higher status and competence to non- conforming rather than conforming individuals. These positive inferences derived from signals of nonconformity are mediated by perceived autonomy and moderated by individual differences in need for uniqueness in the observers. An investigation of boundary conditions demonstrates that the positive inferences disappear when the observer is unfamiliar with the environment, when the nonconforming behavior is depicted as unintentional, and in the absence of expected norms and shared standards of formal conduct. Marco Contextual En la presente investigación documental, se realizó una recopilación histórica del cacao y el chocolate. En donde se encontró que para las culturas prehispánicas el chocolate y el cacao era de gran importancia. El cacao era motivo de ceremonias religiosas, además se consideraba un producto medicinal, alimenticio y al mismo tiempo fue una moneda que se usaba para pagar tributos. A la llegada de los españoles al Nuevo Mundo, conocieron este producto, con el cual quedaron sorprendidos al ver el valor que tenía. Por esta razón Hernán Cortes decidió enviar al emperador Carlos V el tan preciado cacao. Al llegar a Europa, se le añadieron al chocolate diferentes ingredientes, que en el Nuevo Mundo no se conocían como el azúcar y la canela. De esta manera se fue difundiendo por toda Europa. México durante la época del virreinato exportaba grandes cantidades de cacao a Europa, pero a partir de la época de independencia la producción del cacao descendió de manera considerable, y en la actualidad no se ha podido restablecer la producción del cacao, ya que siempre ha estado ligado a las cuestiones políticas y económicas que sucedan en el país. 2 Introducción Actualmente Europa es el principal productor de chocolate, obteniendo la materia prima de África, este es considerado el principal exportador de cacao en el mundo. -
