  • The Radical Potential of Chavismo in Venezuela the First Year and a Half in Power by Steve Ellner
LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES Ellner / RADICAL POTENTIAL OF CHAVISMO The Radical Potential of Chavismo in Venezuela The First Year and a Half in Power by Steve Ellner The circumstances surrounding Hugo Chávez’s pursuit of power and the strategy he has adopted for achieving far-reaching change in Venezuelaare in many ways without parallel in Latin American politics. While many generals have been elected president, Chávez’s electoral triumph was unique in that he was a middle-level officer with radical ideas who had previously led a coup attempt. Furthermore, few Latin American presidents have attacked existing democratic institutions with such fervor while swearing allegiance to the democratic system (Myers and O’Connor, 1998: 193). From the beginning of his political career, Chávez embraced an aggres- sively antiparty discourse. He denounced the hegemony of vertically based political parties, specifically their domination of Congress, the judicial sys- tem, the labor and peasant movements, and civil society in general. Upon his election in December 1998, he followed through on his campaign promise to use a constituent assembly as a vehicle for overhauling the nation’s neo- corporatist political system. He proposed to replace this model with one of direct popular participation in decision making at the local level. His actions and rhetoric, however, also pointed in the direction of a powerful executive whose authority would be largely unchecked by other state institutions. Indeed, the vacuum left by the weakening of the legislative and judicial branches and of government at the state level and the loss of autonomy of such public entities as the Central Bank and the state oil company could well be filled by executive-based authoritarianism.

  • Religiosity and Devotion in Educational Actions
RELIGIOSITY AND DEVOTION IN EDUCATIONAL ACTIONS Nicolae Bolea Abstract: The material has been structured following these aspects: Preliminaries – a general presentation of religious education in Romania and an emphasis on didactic imperatives nowadays. I. Secular educators involved in religious education; emphasis on their support and involvement. II. Religion in the postmodern world; an attempt to approach some of the avalanches of challenges addressed to the Christian Church and to religious education. III. The Church and education also represent an attempt to analyse society and the effort of the Church facing a society growingly influenced by the phenomenon of secularism. IV. This is what God established for us –a plea for the Romanian people, born Christian and the struggle to survive under the protection of the Church through the effort of religious education. Keywords: education, religion, school, christian, Church. Simion Ştefan” Orthodox Theological Seminary, Alba Iulia, Romania; School Inspector for Religion at the Alba County School Inspectorate. 371 Young People in Church and Society egală măsură pe cei dinăuntru şi pe cei dinafară – de această bunătate şi fraternitate, generând astfel pace, dreptate, milă şi caritate.

  • The Americas: Venezuela
Venezuela National Affairs TUE CHAVEZ PHENOMENON HugoChavez was first elected president ofVenezuela in December 1998 with 56 percent of the vote, andtook office in February 1999, launching what he termed the "BolivarianRevolution," named after Simon BolIvar, the nineteenth-centuryliberator of Venezuela. Reelected in 2000 under a new constitution of his owndevising, he won a third term in the national election of December 3,2006, receiving 63 percent of the vote, as against 37 percent for theopposition candidate, Manuel Rosales, governor of Zulia, the richest statein Venezuela and the country's main producer of oil. The result had been a foregone conclusion, and many Venezuelans op posed to the incumbent stayed home onelection day. Although no evi• dence of outright election fraudsurfaced, the president enjoyed the. advantages deriving from unlimitedpolitical power. His advertising and campaign costs were funded by the government, which also kept the reg- istry of those eligible to vote, and did notshare it with the opposition The attention that the world press lavished onChavez almost on a daily basis dwarfed all previous interest thatVenezuela had attracted in its 174 years as an independent country.Who really was Hugo Chavez? Sincebe. coming president Chavez had beencompared to Argentinean dictator Juan Domingo Perón, a paradigm offascist populism; with Juan Velasco Alvarado, the military strongman whoinstituted a leftist dictatorship in Peru that lasted from 1968 until 1975;and with all three of the legendary twentieth-century despots—Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin. And yet his friends and enemies—even Chavez himself,in fact—tended to agree that the best comparison was with FidelCastro, who had been not only a political mentor, butalso a kind of father figure.

  • The Title for This Paper Comes from a Story That David Rome Tells As Part
ICJS WORKING PAPER Sharon Gubbay Helfer 2012-08-27 Rome Among the Bishops: a reflection on David Rome and his contributions to dialogue1 INTRODUCTION Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1910, David Rome arrived with his parents in Vancouver, Canada, at the age of 11. He settled in Montréal in the late 1930s. In 1942 he was hired as press officer by the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC). From 1953 to 1972, he was Director of the Jewish Public Library; thereafter he served as archivist at the CJC. David Rome died Montréal in 1996. Rome was designated Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec, the Quebec government’s highest honour, in 1987. In 1991 the Quebec ministry of immigration and cultural communities awarded him their Prix d’excellence and in the same year he received a doctorate honoris causa from Montreal’s Concordia University. Historians of Quebec Jewry including Pierre Anctil, Ira Robinson and others, continue to refer to Rome as an inspiration for their work.2 And yet, with the exception of one excellent, short article by Robinson that focuses on Rome as historian of Canadian Jewish life, next to nothing has been published about him.3 One possible explanation for the paucity of published work on David Rome may be that he is not someone easily categorized. As well, as I argue here, an important part of his impact was felt behind the scenes, in private, through person-to-person dialogue. The material that I present in this article is based on my reading of a part of the voluminous material on Rome preserved at the Canadian Jewish Congress Charities Committee (CJCCC ) archives and at the archives of the Jewish Public Library of Montreal, as well as on archival material at the BAnQ, Centres d’archives de Québec, having to do with Quebec’s first Arts Council.

  • In Recent Years, the Jewish Communities in Latin America Have
ABSTRACT In recent years, the Jewish communities in Latin America have felt the impact of a series of profound transformations in their social, economic, and political situations. One of the most recent cases concerns the community of Venezuela, under the Bolivarian Revolution led by President Hugo Chávez Frías. This study analyzes the effect of national and transnational factors that have impacted the life of that community. The central claim of this work is that, under shifting articulations between political forces in Venezuela and between the Venezuelan state and international actors, the Jewish community of that country has been under increasing pressure and subject to unprecedented constraints. These constraints have been the result of both processes of political confrontation in Venezuela and processes generated by the interplay of national and transnational forces, which have greatly affected and will likely continue to impact the Venezuelan Jewish community. Beyond shifting the balance of power in Venezuelan society, these changes and choices have transformed the environment in which the organized Jewish community of Venezuela exists. While this paper does not support the view that the new Venezuelan regime intends to promote a systematic atmosphere of hostility toward Jews, its findings suggest that its rhetoric, coalitional dynamics, and strategic international positioning have narrowed the public space that the Jewish community enjoys legitimately, have created serious concerns and has already affected that community, which has recently suffered from acts of antisemitic vandalism. The Venezuelan leadership should certainly be more cautious of the social consequences of its statements and the way in which addresses its society’s multiculturalism.

  • Fascism and Settler Colonialism in Canada
Fascism and Settler Colonialism in Canada by Dallas Jokic A thesis submitted to the Department of Philosophy In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September 2019 Copyright © Dallas Jokic, 2019 Abstract This thesis aims to map out the relationship between fascism and settler colonialism in Canada. In the first chapter, I go through a number of theories of fascism, including by contemporary historians and 20th century Marxists. I draw on the work of Deleuze and Guattari and their distinction between molar and molecular (or micro) fascism. In the context in a country like Canada, in which fascism has not taken on a molar form on the state level, I argue that we need an account of fascism that is sensitive to its molecular expressions. I highlight three tendencies of fascism that we should keep an eye on if we are concerned about its emergence. In the second chapter, I explore the role of the settler state in cultivating and producing microfascist affects, feelings, and beliefs. I examine the deputization of settlers by the Canadian state in order to expand and protect territory and the way this cultivates racist affect and encourages (often fatal) acts of violence. Finally, I consider the way whiteness in Canada becomes a territorializing force, and sketch out a model of private property I call settler whitespace. In the third chapter, I consider the fascist rhetoric around “the great replacement” and “white genocide” in relation to the structure of settler colonialism. I consider the logic of replacement in Canada as not just a territorial project, but one that also creates a racially exclusionary idea of Canadian nationalism.

Vasvári Although the emergence of research on women in the Holocaust dates from the 1980s, the task of integrating the role of women — and that of children — into Holocaust Studies is far from complete, not the least because of the publication of so many women's life writing texts during the last decades, most of which remain virtually unknown. Holocaust scholarship still tends to privilege the Holocaust experience of men as universal and is reluctant to acknowledge testimony that does not follow preconceived gender stereotypes of suitable female behavior or pre- existing narratives of survival (see, e.g., Vasvári, "Women's Holocaust"; Waxman, "Unheard Testimony"; authors of texts of life writing in English are listed in the bibliography; other references are listed in the works cited).
