Perhaps you feel that the government is doing a great job; perhaps you’re not sure but feel it should have your support anyway in this emergency; perhaps you think it’s doing a bad job and wish someone else was in charge. Whatever your personal views, support in the nation for the lockdown was that 90% supported it and 70% supported it strongly. This level of support for a government policy is usually unheard of in democratic societies. If a government gets 50% support for a policy, it’s delighted. A democracy allows for a huge range of opinion and people usually exercise their freedom to hold the opinion they think best and act upon it. Of course, we have seen people even in the lockdown act upon their opinions; people have gone to beauty spots in groups when they’re not supposed to; even government advisors have broken the rules. But overall the solidarity has been inspiring. Some of that solidarity is because we feel under enormous threat from the virus and now the lockdown is being eased, controversy is breaking out as to what is safe to do and what is not. Some of the solidarity is because of the threat not just to ourselves, families and friends, but to an institution. In normal times the NHS enjoys 70% strong support from the nation. It is seen as our most precious national resource, even when there is no pandemic. We do not want to see the NHS overwhelmed by the sick and be unable to help all those who need it. An institution that commands very little support, even in these days, is the Church. Despite complying with government directives to close buildings, conduct funerals at the graveside or in crematoria, and having to cancel weddings and christenings along with other regular activities, the Church is still there and helping those who need it. The church community is still worshipping and praying together, still meeting to conduct business and study God’s word. Our prayers for the world at this time of pandemic are constantly being offered to God and in our prayer and worship we know that God is present with us, with those who are sick, those who are caring for the sick, those who are maintaining the fabric of society and those who are looking ahead to meet future needs. God is never overwhelmed by need. Whatever our support for him, his support for us never wavers. At a time of loneliness, fear and loss, he is there to help us through the crisis and offers us hope for the future. Previous Meeting Matters Arising Flooding: the work of the Environment Agency, Thames Water and ECC The Chairman began the meeting by expressing sympathy to all those residents who that had been affected by the recent flooding. He identified several points of real concern where attention was very much needed. These were the roadside bank at the northern end of the village, the drainage system at the top of Butt Lane; the centre and southern end of the village and the maintenance of and widening of the River Stort. There then followed a wide ranging discussion which focused on the works of the different agencies involved and the lack of maintenance of the river, ditches and drains and the inability of the drains to cope with the deluge. It was decided that an open meeting should be convened to which representatives of the different agencies would be invited in order to try to identify long term solutions. CCllr Gooding agreed to be fully involved in the meeting. There was nothing further to add at the moment on the Almshouses.

A planned photography session was cancelled dlre to atrociolrs December weather and one or the other guidcd my steps into the Essex Recorcl OI[ce. The lady on the desk took nry order. then offered me a sernon to read whilst I waitecl. I have that soft of presence. William Chaplin, a long clead pricst, was belabouring the faithful of Bishop's Stortford, who must have been celebrafing Napoleon's exile to Elba with undue vigour. His ardour was such that dre sermon was printed; its nessagc basically could be taken to say '"Thou shall not go poaching, for it leadeth thee into the sin oI housebreaking, and lrom thence 'tis but a step to MURDER. Witness the recent events at Berden." I quickly decided that it would be necessary to locate Berden and this was easy. The village lay on a back road between Newport and Bishops Stortlord. I l.rad promised an article lor Nenpofi News, and suddenly I felt an afticle coming on. It took but a moment to locate the Berclen parish register and I soon found the entry for Henry Trigg, aged 36, shoemaker, The Street, Berden, who died 25th March 1814. A star at the bottom ol the page indicated a handwritten note daLed 1899: "His headstone states that he was murdered." I beat a hasty path to the nearby librarl and swiftly ordered a copy of the Chelm{ord Chronicle for 1814.
