Dear Friends

I don’t know how you feel about the way the government has handled the Covid-19 crisis. Perhaps you feel that the government is doing a great job; perhaps you’re not sure but feel it should have your support anyway in this emergency; perhaps you think it’s doing a bad job and wish someone else was in charge. Whatever your personal views, support in the nation for the lockdown was that 90% supported it and 70% supported it strongly. This level of support for a government policy is usually unheard of in democratic societies. If a government gets 50% support for a policy, it’s delighted. A democracy allows for a huge range of opinion and people usually exercise their freedom to hold the opinion they think best and act upon it. Of course, we have seen people even in the lockdown act upon their opinions; people have gone to beauty spots in groups when they’re not supposed to; even government advisors have broken the rules. But overall the solidarity has been inspiring. Some of that solidarity is because we feel under enormous threat from the virus and now the lockdown is being eased, controversy is breaking out as to what is safe to do and what is not. Some of the solidarity is because of the threat not just to ourselves, families and friends, but to an institution. In normal times the NHS enjoys 70% strong support from the nation. It is seen as our most precious national resource, even when there is no pandemic. We do not want to see the NHS overwhelmed by the sick and be unable to help all those who need it. An institution that commands very little support, even in these days, is the Church. Despite complying with government directives to close buildings, conduct funerals at the graveside or in crematoria, and having to cancel weddings and christenings along with other regular activities, the Church is still there and helping those who need it. The church community is still worshipping and praying together, still meeting to conduct business and study God’s word. Our prayers for the world at this time of pandemic are constantly being offered to God and in our prayer and worship we know that God is present with us, with those who are sick, those who are caring for the sick, those who are maintaining the fabric of society and those who are looking ahead to meet future needs. God is never overwhelmed by need. Whatever our support for him, his support for us never wavers. At a time of loneliness, fear and loss, he is there to help us through the crisis and offers us hope for the future. Yours in Christ

Margaret

If you are staying safe at home and need some help, please contact: Parish Council: [email protected] or 01279 814544 Manuden support group: Leanne Eustace - 01279 899018 or 07946 542370 Planning application for Land to the North of Stewarts Way - UTT/19/0022/OP The applicant has requested that the appeal be downgraded from a Hearing to Written Representations. The Parish Council and Manuden Residents Group have opposed this as they believe it would serve the village’s best interests if we put our case ‘face-to-face’ to the Planning Inspector. Please refer to https://www.uttlesford.gov.uk/article/4863/Comment-or-search-for-a-planning- application and search for the application – UTT/19/0022/OP. Annual Parish Meeting The Parish Council are still holding their regular meetings, albeit online. If any residents have points they would like to discuss with the Council, please contact the Parish Clerk who can arrange for you to be included in the meeting. The Annual Parish Meeting went ahead as planned on 14 May where our current Chair, Katrina Hardy, stepped down and was replaced by John Archer. Katrina has done an impressive job as Chair and will be sadly missed on the Council, but we welcome John to this new role and look forward to benefitting from his wide experience of village matters. We currently therefore have a vacancy for a Councillor – please contact the Parish Clerk for details. Due to the virus this did not take place so everything has been put on-line. Jane Tresadern is happy to continue as President for the forthcoming year with Alison Watson, Doreen Adams, Valerie Bartram, Glynis Cheers and Mary Bevan continuing as committee members. We will sadly lose three committee members—Sian Dorrington, Bridget Pulyk and Jo Trueman. We are delighted to welcome Rosemary Green to join the committee. Obviously our June meeting will be unable to take place. The speaker should have been Charlie Hart, author and gardener, however we are hoping to have him come along to speak at another date. Enjoy the sunshine and we look forward to meeting up again.

Re-opening Whilst the government guidelines are that the Community Centre must stay closed for now, we do hope that we may be able to re open the centre, providing we are able to make it a safe environment, in July. We keep our fingers crossed that the rate of Covid 19 infection goes down to allow this to happen. Although the car park remains closed for security reasons, villagers are welcome to use the fields to get exercise. Please check the website for news of reopening, which we will do as soon as it is safe to do so. Emails are still checked regularly and bookings are still being taken for future events.

Art Competition – Winners Thank you to everyone that entered our art competition, we loved seeing the wonderfully, imaginative paintings, sketches and drawings. It was very hard to choose, but we are delighted to announce the following winners, who will win a children’s party at the centre of the Community Centre Art Competition. William Noffki, for his beautiful horse sketch Isabelle Down, for her detailed painting of 2 dogs

And a joint prize to Olivia and Henry Williams for their colourful pictures of a rainbow elephant and a monster .

Thank you to Penny, Louis, Heath, Emily, George , Evan , Jonty, Kat and Eliza for their fabulous pictures, who will all receive a small prize. All the pictures are now on show on the window of the centre. We are missing being able to meet together for our weekly meetings, especially as usually in the Summer term, we go on many outdoor adventures. However, some of the girls are finding time between school work and family activities, to earn some badges. The most popular has been baking which included making your favourite bake, doing some cake decorating linked to a special day, and baking a story- creating something linked to a story from a book, film, TV show or song.

Another one was the Happy Holiday badge, which had been adapted to do at home, rather than on a holiday with the Brownies. One of the tasks was to put up and sleep in a tent, or make a den of some sort to sleep in, either inside or outside- the one made from a very large cardboard box was a great idea. Everyone seemed to enjoy the V.E. Day celebrations, making decorations for their houses- the girls’ houses seen in Manuden were great: no doubt those elsewhere were too. It isn’t looking likely that we will be able to meet this term, but let’s hope we can in September. In the meantime, there are plenty of Guiding badges and activities for the girls to do, so keep well, happy and helpful. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Solutions to Bee Swarms

This warm weather is the time when bees start to leave if the hives are too overcrowded, and will take the Queen with them as they are all dependent upon her and she on them. This is why there are so many swarms at the moment. Honeybees are at their most docile when swarming. At this stage, they do not have a hive with honey and brood to protect, and their honey-guts are full of honey stores from the original hive. Full bees are gentle bees, partly because it is physically difficult for them to tilt their abdomens enough to sting. The Beekeeper cut ours down on the branches on which they had settled, and dropped them into a hive he had brought with him. The hive was on a white sheet, and the entrance to the hive was left open so that the bees that escaped from the branches when he dropped them in, could have time to join their fellow bees.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING REPORTS – PART 1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Manuden Golf Society 2019/20 -Report to Manuden Parish Council
2019 was the Society's 21st Anniversary. So, as well as our usual Individual Stableford competitions, the annual team skirmish against Quendon & Rickling and the 2 Christmas events, we added a very enjoyable short tour to the excellent East Sussex National Golf Resort and still managed to squeeze in an Anniversary Dinner at Saffron Walden Golf Club. We believed the anniversary year had been well celebrated both on course and off and we arrived in January with a confirmed programme for 2020. Then the pandemic. We were asked to look forward. Our golf days this year are in May, June, July, September and December but we can only speculate when & where the first drive down the fairway will be. Golf is not a contact sport, except for handshakes and kisses at the end of a round. The distancing issues can be overcome, for example, either leave the untouched flag in the hole on the green or do not have any flags at all with the help of score cards showing the hole's exact position. Sadly the very important social side is much more difficult. However we in the Society still have the Tour bug and surely the Tour to the Omaha Beach Golf Club in Normandy on the 6-8th May 2021 will go ahead! Jeff Attfield th KEEP THE DATE—AUGUST 15 . As you can see from the letter, our programme for VE Day on May 8th was so good that we won a performance and lesson from the Lindy Hop dancers—this was especially brilliant because English Heritage only had 1 winner per County!! Please keep the date of Saturday 15th August free as, if it is possible by then, we hope to have a Party in the Park to celebrate VE/VJ Day when the Lindy Hop Dancers will come. It will be smaller than originally planned – Afternoon Tea, WW2 Exhibition, Games for all on the field, Some Stalls and the possibility of Classic Cars. We very much hope that we will be out of Lockdown by then and if so this will be a great opportunity to have a party and meet up again. At the moment this is just a plan until we know more.
News For Manuden & Berden Deadline Date for the July Parish News is st Sunday 21 June (Subject to change)
THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY www.hundredparishes.org.uk
One of the features of website is a section on famous people from our area. There is a short account of each of 21 past and present celebrities, from Dick Turpin to Jamie Oliver. Gustav Holst is one of these and I make no apology for repeating text from our website here:
GUSTAV HOLST (1874-1934) While teaching and composing in , Gustav Holst began a love affair with after a walking holiday in the area led to his taking a weekend cottage nearby. A great attraction must have been its cathedral-sized church with spacious, white-painted interior, where he became involved with local music- making, encouraged by the town’s socialist vicar, Conrad Noel. Holst himself was an active socialist.
In 1916, Holst invited some of his London pupils to spend four days of music-making in Thaxted in the town’s first Whitsuntide festival. Sadly, this was repeated for only two more years before being moved to London to avoid Holst’s pupils, especially those from St Paul’s School, becoming associated with Noel’s controversial extremist left-wing sermons. It was 1980 before the highly successful Thaxted Festival was re-established. Holst stayed in Thaxted for several years working, amongst other things, on his acknowledged masterpiece, The Planets. He adapted the big melody from “Jupiter” to accompany the poem “I vow to thee, my country”. This became a popular hymn and Holst named the tune “Thaxted”. It has since been used for no fewer than fourteen other hymns worldwide as well as the anthem of the Rugby World Cup. Holst also composed the music for a popular Christmas carol, “In the Bleak Midwinter”.
During these days of social distancing we are not able to travel and enjoy our beautiful area as much as before, but we can remind ourselves of what is out there and read about our rich local history on the Society’s website. Ken McDonald, Secretary
BERDEN BUDDIES.
Don’t forget we are here to help during this difficult time.
We have been helping those in difficulty and others to stay indoors with basic shopping, prescription collections and many other little jobs that make neighbours into friends.
We all often ask ‘How are you?’ but we could ask ‘How are you doing?’
As time in lockdown has gone on and social distancing is likely to continue in some form for quite a while, if you would like a bit of time to talk or just a friendly chat, we can help with that too, whether you are on your own or just want to talk to someone different.
One more thing: If you are not receiving village email news via Mailchimp please contact us and we will put you on the system. It is just news, mainly things we think are important, not gossip.
THIS IS IMPORTANT We have been sent information relating to the use of our defibrillators during the on-going virus situation by AJS First Aid Training Services and the Resuscitation Council. This is for anyone who finds themselves having to perform CPR/Defibrillation in a home/family setting during this difficult time.
Please take the time to look at the following site and IMPORTANTLY please also look at the video contained within it. https://www.resus.org.uk/media/statements/resuscitation-council-uk-statements-on-covid-19- coronavirus-cpr-and-resuscitation/covid-community/
We also request that you adhere to the following guidelines:-
 Wear gloves  A towel or similar should be placed over the victim’s nose and mouth !
When we carry out chest compressions air is released through the nose and mouth in droplet form, thus causing the possible spread of a viral infection.
 Check Danger, make sure area is safe to proceed  Do NOT check air way or breathing  Shake shoulders in normal manner  Ask ‘Are you all right?’  No response: Call 999 and inform the service of what is taking place.
 Follow instructions.
BERDEN PARISH COUNCIL
MAY DEPARTS AND MIDSUMMER APPROACHES
In one thing we must all be united when we consider and reflect on this beautiful but very strange spring that we are all both enjoying and enduring.
But whilst the days of the week have taken on a sort of Groundhog Day resemblance we did manage to break the routine a little by pushing out the boat a bit for the 75th commemoration of the Allied victory at the end of WW2. And we pulled it off with all the crew suitably socially distanced in a number of locations around the parish. Thanks are due to so many of you for the great success and pleasure it gave to so many. There was art work from people of all ages, bunting galore, music, foliage & flowers and abundant flags. The very early seasonal cherry on the cake was that by the end of that weekend we had collected £181 for the Royal British Legion for their work with veterans of many problems and their families.
******
I have walked and enjoyed our footpaths for many years but have never seen them used as well as they have been this spring. Almost all are well trod and very clear for new participants in this great pleasure to find their way around. Greater use also results sadly in more incidents of selfishly ignored dog waste. Your dog, your waste – PLEASE pick it up and dispose of it properly. Many of you buy your own waste bags, for which thank you, but your Parish Council also provides them from a box situated near the bus shelter. Please use bags and think of others, especially small children, when walking your dog.
During April I received an anonymous complaint about the collapsed foot bridge that crosses the ditch on the path that leads from Pelham Road to the west of Arnolds Spring. Yes, it is in a very sad state and Essex Highways assured me that they have the matter in hand and that it will be dealt with ‘soon’. Please consult the Oxford English Dictionary for a definition of that word.
Many of you have greatly missed the spring time use of our children’s playground and Simon’s Field. Whilst the former has to remain closed for the foreseeable future the latter is now open for careful and restricted use, just one family group or an individual at any one time only. Please do not use it as a venue for picnics but enjoy the space, kick a ball about and make the most of getting some air and letting off a bit of steam. Please do not touch the goal posts.
The Berden Buddy scheme is working well and it is never too late to add your names to the list either as a volunteer or a possible recipient of assistance.
If you are not receiving important village news via email / Mailchimp please get in touch with me and I will ensure that you are kept up to date with the important stuff, not gossip.
Enjoy your homes; make the most of your gardens and - Love June in a Time of Coronavirus. (With apologies in the sign off to Gabriel Garcia Marquez) John Burton – on behalf of Berden Parish Council 777674 or 07860 343324 or [email protected] LOCKDOWN DIARY I have been writing a diary since the lockdown started, recording statistics, emotions, and personal thoughts, together with news from around the world - anything that comes to mind. How tearful we sometimes feel. I have been recording these bits and pieces and if anyone would like to send me their thoughts, they will be added to compile some sort of history. No names need to be mentioned but it would be good to have a range of views and thoughts from across the village. Many people thought last week for some reason was a horrid and unsettling week, whatever their circumstances and the immediate future does not fill me with confidence. Please help to record some of this for posterity. It can be quickly forgotten. But let's be grateful that we live in such a wonderful area with walks, skies, birds, flowers and trees and this is where many of us get our support. So please send me your thoughts and they will be included. Jenny Arnell [email protected] 777239 Create and Connect What a great day we had on VE day! Thank you everyone who took the time and effort to create some pictures for the artwork show at the BERDEN BUS STOP TATE. It all looked very good and made a great focus in the village. The Bus Stop Tate will be starting a new theme shortly which will be NATURE. So be ready to put up your new creations. Don’t forget to fix it securely so it looks its best. Maybe even mount it on a bit of cardboard or paper. You will be amazed at how different it looks. Any artwork taken down will be stored carefully to show after the lockdown period. Create and Connect is growing and more people are sending in their drawings, photographs and even films. You can find these in the Create and Connect gallery on the Berden Village Website. Don’t forget we are interested in any different or creative activity you have undertaken in your lockdown time, including recording those different things through photographing them or writing about them. It is not just about the end product either, let us know how you are going along the way. Some people have already asked for ideas and feedback. If you have a great idea and want to share it with others this is your opportunity. Dilys, Sue and Kate
The Love of Scrubs Thank you everyone who raided their airing cupboards and bottom drawers for unwanted sheets, duvets and curtains to provide fabric for much needed hospital scrubs. The response from Berden has been amazing! The fabric was all sent off for an industrial wash and my thanks go to Sue Griffiths, Diane Holt and Jenny Arnell in our Berden team who started stitching wash bags to hold the scrubs and, a little trickier, the scrubs themselves, in a variety of patterns, colours and sizes. More fabric, (preferably not light colours, as they can be transparent!) and sewing volunteers, are always welcome. Thanks again Kate The Finished Article!
Two Walking Boots Two Walking Poles and that is all you need for your Nordic walking!
During the last couple of months, many of us have spent more time than usual enjoying walks along our public footpaths surrounded by lush, green countryside. Have you ever considered using specially designed poles when you go on your walks? Nordic walking was originally a technique that skiers in the Nordic countries used to keep up their skiing training when there was no snow on the ground. Since then, this way of walking for fitness has grown all over Europe and become a popular exercise for people of any age group or fitness level. You do not need mountains or forests, it can be done anywhere with the right footwear and poles. The poles are not the same as trekking poles – Nordic walking poles are adjustable to fit individual heights and they have wrist straps and rubber feet. There are many benefits to Nordic walking: - uses 90% of your skeletal muscles - tones your upper as well as lower body at the same time - burns up 46% more calories than ordinary walking - reduces pressure on knees and joints - good for heart and lungs - benefits everybody, including those with medical problems - the poles “propel” you along to move faster A group of us have been walking regularly every Monday morning for many years. We walk for 2-3 hours, depending on the area and the footpaths, in sunshine, rain and even in snow! We have had to take a break now of course, but still walk individually. If you are interested to know more about the technique, please contact me and anybody is very welcome to join us when we start up again! Ulla 07794552546 [email protected]
