    “In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell Glenn Miller Original release label “Sun Valley Serenade” Though Glenn Miller and His Orchestra’s well-known, robust and swinging hit “In the Mood” was recorded in 1939 (and was written even earlier), it has since come to symbolize the 1940s, World War II, and the entire Big Band Era. Its resounding success—becoming a hit twice, once in 1940 and again in 1943—and its frequent reprisal by other artists has solidified it as a time- traversing classic. Covered innumerable times, “In the Mood” has endured in two versions, its original instrumental (the specific recording added to the Registry in 2004) and a version with lyrics. The music was written (or written down) by Joe Garland, a Tin Pan Alley tunesmith who also composed “Leap Frog” for Les Brown and his band. The lyrics are by Andy Razaf who would also contribute the words to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” For as much as it was an original work, “In the Mood” is also an amalgamation, a “mash-up” before the term was coined. It arrived at its creation via the mixture and integration of three or four different riffs from various earlier works. Its earliest elements can be found in “Clarinet Getaway,” from 1925, recorded by Jimmy O’Bryant, an Arkansas bandleader. For his Paramount label instrumental, O’Bryant was part of a four-person ensemble, featuring a clarinet (played by O’Bryant), a piano, coronet and washboard. Five years later, the jazz piece “Tar Paper Stomp” by Joseph “Wingy” Manone, from 1930, beget “In the Mood’s” signature musical phrase.

Four Avenues of Service Paul Harris Fellow Almost everyone who is a member of a Rotary club for more than a year knows that Rotary member Newsletter No. 5, Chicago printer Harry Ruggles, brought singing to Rotary meetings. What almost no one knows Photo Album is why, and most don’t know how important it was to the life of Rotary. Calendar Harry Ruggles was a very moral man. He detested off-color language, About Rotary malicious innuendo and classless humor. He argued in club meetings for Becoming A Member clean language. Little more than a year after Rotary had been formed, at an Useful Links evening meeting in 1906, the guest speaker began a story. Having heard it before, Harry also had heard the off-color ending, and felt it was Contact Us inappropriate for the club, so hejumped up in the middle of the joke and Site Map yelled, “Come on boys, let's sing!” He then led the club in the singing of “Let Guest Speaker Me Call You Sweetheart.” District 6900 Conference This was not only the first time that members had ever sung in Rotary, but apparently, also the first Sporting Clay Event time that a group of businessmen ever sang at a business meeting, anywhere.

They boasted an exuberant, close-harmony style well-suited to cheery novelty songs, and their intricate vocal arrangements and rhythmic ability mirrored the sound of the swing bands that constituted their chief competition in their heyday. For the most part, The Andrews Sisters did not focus on romantic material, but rather sang upbeat songs, often borrowed from other cultures. Although they were well-established by the time the U.S. entered World War II, their optimistic tone made them perfect boosters of the war effort. In later years they remained closely identified with the war years, remembered as wearing military uniforms and singing their signature song: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. The three sisters were born in Minnesota to a Greek immigrant father, Peter Andreos (changed to Andrews upon arriving in the US) and Olga Sollie, a Norwegian-American mother.

    ABSTRACT THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED by Brian Nealon I've always been fascinated by the arabesques behind daily life: the interconnectedness of all living things, the patterns they arrange around themselves, the rhythms at play between them. And I don’t really get intoxicated all that often. The tracings of these rhythms can be found in all great art, though they’re easier to see in belly dances, Irish gravestones, and the Chinese knots guarding the Heaven Temple walls. They’re in the telling of a good story. I’ve worked to that end in this collection, with various approaches—different narrative styles, points of view, and effects—and, as a matter of course, with varying degrees of success.     ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 38 By: Newberry A Resolution finding Bill Arter the inspiration for "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"; commending Bill Arter’s life and career; and directing distribution. WHEREAS, William "Bill" Bernard Arter was born June 10, 1923, in Woodriver, Illinois, the son of James and Lillian Arter. As a young man he tried out as a second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and was told to report for spring training. Instead, Bill was drafted into military service during World War II and reported to the United States Army. He was assigned to the Medical Unit of Company B; and WHEREAS, Bill Arter played the bugle. The Army was racially segregated at the time, and Company C was an all-black outfit. Whenever he had the opportunity, Bill would visit Company C for jam sessions, thus earning him the nickname, "The Bugle Boy from Company B"; and WHEREAS, Bill Arter earned five Bronze Stars during his military service. Bill celebrated his 21st birthday deployed with the third wave during the D-Day invasion where he won one of his Bronze Stars. As a medic he cared for wounded soldiers, but his care was not limited to medical matters as he entertained the troops as well. Throughout the war Bill would join with a few other musically inclined soldiers and entertain what would eventually total thousands of troops; and WHEREAS, Don Raye and Hughie Prince wrote the song, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", which was introduced by the Andrews Sisters in the 1941 Abbott and Costello movie, "Buck Privates". "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Song.
