SJS Sing with Mary Ann East V2.Pdf SJS Sing Along Word Sheet July 13 Love Songs When I Fall in Love When I fall in love it will be forever, or I’ll never fall in love. In a restless world like this is, love is ended before it’s begun, and too many moonlight kisses seem to cool in the warmth of the sun. When I give my heart it will be completely, or I’ll never give my heart; And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too is when I fall in love with you. Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man Oh, listen sister, I love that mister man And I can’t tell you why. There ain’t no reason why I should love that man. It must be somethin’ the angels done plan. Fish got to swim, birds got to fly, I got to love one man till I die, Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine. Tell me he’s lazy, tell me he’s slow, Tell me I’m crazy, maybe I know. Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine. When he’s goes away, that’s a rainy day, And when he comes back, that day is fine! The sun will shine! He can come home as late as can be, home without him is no home to me. Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine! Somebody Loves Me Somebody love me, I wonder who, I wonder who it can be. Somebody loves me, I wish I knew who it can be worries me. For ev’ry guy who passes me I shout, Hey! maybe. You were meant to be my loving baby. Somebody love me I wonder who, maybe it’s you. For ev’ry guy who passes me I shout, Hey! maybe. You were meant to be, you were meant to be my baby. Somebody love me I wonder who, maybe, maybe it’s you. Let’s Fall in Love I have a feeling, it’s a feeling I’m concealing, I don’t know why. It’s just a mental, incidental, sentimental alibi. But I adore you, so strong for you, why go on stalling? I am falling, love is calling, why be shy? Let’s fall in love, why shouldn’t we fall in love? Our hearts are made of it, Let’s take a chance why be afraid of it? Let’s close our eyes, and make our own paradise. Little we know of it, still we can try to make a go of it. We might have been meant for each other, to be or not to be, let our hearts discover. Let’s fall in love, why shouldn’t we fall in love? Now is the time for it while we are young, let’s fall in love. We might have been meant for each other, to be or not to be, let our hearts discover. Let’s fall in love, why shouldn’t we fall in love? Now is the time for it while we are young, Now is the time for it while we are young, let’s fall in love. I Can’t Give You Anything but Love Gee, but it’s tough to be broke, kid. It’s not a joke, kid, it’s a curse. My luck is changing, it’s gotten from simply rotten to something worse. Who knows, someday I will win, too. I’ll begin to reach my prime. Now, though I see what our end is, all I can spend is just my time. I can’t give you anything but love, baby. That’s the only thing I’ve plenty of, baby. Dream awhile, scheme awhile; we’re sure to find happiness and I guess all those things you’ve always pined for. Gee, I’d like to see you looking swell, baby. diamond bracelets Woolworth doesn’t sell, baby. Till that lucky day, you know darned well, baby, I can’t give you anything but love. All the Things You Are Time and again I’ve longed for adventure, something to make my heart beat the faster. What did I long for? I never really knew. Finding your love, I’ve found my adventure; touching your hand, my heart beats the faster. All that I want in all of this world is you. You are the promised kiss of springtime, that makes the lonely winter seem long. You are the breathless hush of evening that trembles on the brink of a lovely song. You are the angel glow that lights a star, the dearest things I know are what you are. Someday my happy arms will hold you, and someday I’ll know that moment divine when all the things you are, are mine! Someday my happy arms will hold you, and someday I’ll know that moment divine when all the things you are, are mine! A Fine Romance (Female) A fine romance with no kisses! A fine romance, my friend, this is! We should be like a couple of hot tomatoes, but you’re as cold as yesterday’s mashed potatoes. A fine romance, you won’t nestle! A fine romance, you won’t wrestle! I’ve never mussed the crease in blue serge pant; I haven’t got a chance. This is a fine romance! A fine romance, my good fellow! You take romance, I’ll take Jell-O! You’re calmer than the seals in the Arctic Ocean; at least they flap their fins to express emotion. A fine romance, with no quarrels, with no insults, and all morals! You’re just as hard to land as the “Île de France!” I never get the chance. This is a fine romance! (Male) A fine romance, with no kisses! A fine romance, my friend, this is! True love should have the thrills that a healthy crime has. We don’t have half the thrills that the “March of Time” has. A fine romance, with no clinches! A fine romance, with no pinches! You never give the orchids I send a glance. No! You like cactus plants. This is a fine romance! I haven’t got a chance. This is a fine romance! If I Were a Bell Ask me how do I feel, ask me now that we’re cozy and clinging! Well, sir, all I can say is if I were a bell I’d be ringing. From the moment we kissed tonight that’s the way I’ve just got to behave. Boy, if I were a lamp I’d light, and if I were a banner I’d wave. Ask me how do I feel, little me with my quiet upbringing. Well, sir, all I can say is if I were a gate I’d be swinging. And if I were a watch I’d start popping my spring, Or if I were a bell I’d go ding dong ding dong ding. Ask me how do I feel, from this chemistry lesson I’m learning. Yeah, chemistry, all I can say is if I were a bridge I’d be burning. Yes, I knew my morale would crack from the wonderful way that you looked. Boy, if I were a duck I’d quack, or if I were a goose I’d be cooked. Ask me how do I feel, ask me now that we’re fondly caressing. Pal, if I were a salad I know I’d be splashing my dressing. Ask me how to describe this whole beautiful thing, well if I were a bell I’d go ding dong ding dong ding! My Funny Valentine Behold the way our fine-feathered friend his virtue doth parade. Thou knowest not, my dimwitted friend, the picture thou hast made, thy vacant brow and the tousled hair conceal thy good intent. Thou noble, upright truthful, sincere and slightly dopey gent, you’re my funny valentine, sweet comic valentine. You make me smile with my heart. Your looks are laughable, unphotographable, yet you’re my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek; is your mouth a little weak, when you open it to speak, are you smart? But don’t change a hair for me, not if you care for me, stay, little valentine, stay! Each day is Valentine’s Day. Is your figure less than Greek; is your mouth a little weak, when you open it to speak, are you smart? But don’t change a hair got me, not if you care for me, stay, little valentine, stay! • “In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell Glenn Miller Original release label “Sun Valley Serenade” Though Glenn Miller and His Orchestra’s well-known, robust and swinging hit “In the Mood” was recorded in 1939 (and was written even earlier), it has since come to symbolize the 1940s, World War II, and the entire Big Band Era. Its resounding success—becoming a hit twice, once in 1940 and again in 1943—and its frequent reprisal by other artists has solidified it as a time- traversing classic. Covered innumerable times, “In the Mood” has endured in two versions, its original instrumental (the specific recording added to the Registry in 2004) and a version with lyrics. The music was written (or written down) by Joe Garland, a Tin Pan Alley tunesmith who also composed “Leap Frog” for Les Brown and his band. The lyrics are by Andy Razaf who would also contribute the words to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” For as much as it was an original work, “In the Mood” is also an amalgamation, a “mash-up” before the term was coined. It arrived at its creation via the mixture and integration of three or four different riffs from various earlier works. Its earliest elements can be found in “Clarinet Getaway,” from 1925, recorded by Jimmy O’Bryant, an Arkansas bandleader. For his Paramount label instrumental, O’Bryant was part of a four-person ensemble, featuring a clarinet (played by O’Bryant), a piano, coronet and washboard. Five years later, the jazz piece “Tar Paper Stomp” by Joseph “Wingy” Manone, from 1930, beget “In the Mood’s” signature musical phrase.

Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent.

  • Anglophone Music As Poetry
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Croatian Digital Thesis Repository University of Rijeka Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka Department of English Matea Lacmanović: Anglophone Music as Poetry Mentor: Lovorka Gruić Grmuša, PhD Rijeka, July 2015 1 Abstract Literature as a whole is usually divided into poetry, prose and drama (Solar 2006: 154) with fairly clear boundaries between them. When it comes to their subdivision and definition of specific literature and art type, the boundaries become unclear and many questions arise. One of the most difficult questions to answer is what poetry is and which criteria must be met in order for some work to be classified as poetry. It is known that authors such as Shakespeare, Byron, Cummings or Angelou are poets and their work is interpreted as poetry. However, can the circle of poetry and art be expanded to similar forms such as contemporary music? That is the topic of this thesis – analysis, explanation and specific examples of modern song lyrics which can be viewed as poetry and something more valuable in the art context than it actually is due to the commercialization of music. With songs performed by Tupac, Garbage, Leonard Cohen, Bill Withers and various artists who belong to different music genres and eras, poetry is broadened and upgraded to the 21st century level. Key words: Anglophone music, music, poetry, lyrics, analysis, literature, art, contemporary, modern, intermediation, authorship 2 Table of Contents Abstract

  • FALLING in Love-Small
On Falling in Love1 Michael Guy Thompson, Ph.D. July 17, 2017 What does it mean to fall in love? Can anyone fall in love, or are some people incapable of it? What exactly has to happen in order to fall in love? What is this phenomenon that distinguishes the notion of “falling” from other kinds of loving, even those that are sexual in nature? The first thing we need to consider is that the word “love” is imprecise. It can mean a lot of different modes of feeling in a variety of relationships, and it may not even connote a feeling at all. Is the love a mother feels for her child, for example, the same as a young man feels for his first motorcycle? Is the love of god the same as the love for a sexual partner, or the love of food? Is the love for oneself the same as the love for sunsets, or the cinema? And what about the drug experience? Don’t drugs elicit feelings that we associate with intense and unremitting pleasure, or equanimity? Don’t we sometimes take drugs to approximate the feeling of love that is missing in our lives? Clearly all these experiences are not the same, and the feelings we associate with them, even if we say we “love” every one of them, are distinct. 1 Invited Address, R. D. • Ambassador Robert G. Neumann
The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Foreign Affairs Oral History Project AMBASSADOR ROBERT G. NEUMANN Recollections Out Of My Life Written in Kabul, Afghanistan April, 1968 Copyright 2015 ADST INTRODUCTION The reflections and reminiscences which follow are not designed to constitute in anyway a complete autobiography. There appears to be no need for such a work, and it would be presumptuous of me to endeavor anything of the kind. And yet, as I have started into the second century of my life, it seems to me that thus far my life has known considerable drama and has touched in one way or another on a number of interesting events. It has certainly been far from dull. In historic terms it saw its beginning in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, covered deep economic depression and political upheaval including two brief but violent civil wars interspersed with brief periods of imprisonment, and then coming to a violent climax in a much longer period of incarceration and mortal danger. And then, after miraculous deliverance, began the second phase of my life, my emigration to America, with resumption of my studies, marriage and family, but also war and a professional career which eventually elevated the once penniless immigrant boy to the dignity of an ambassador of the United States of America. As these lines are written, their purpose is not clear to me, but because my life has covered so many events and spanned so many varied and different periods and experiences, I felt impelled to record them from memory and to put down some of the thoughts and emotions which passed through my mind as these events took place.
