“In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell Glenn Miller Original release label “Sun Valley Serenade” Though Glenn Miller and His Orchestra’s well-known, robust and swinging hit “In the Mood” was recorded in 1939 (and was written even earlier), it has since come to symbolize the 1940s, World War II, and the entire Big Band Era. Its resounding success—becoming a hit twice, once in 1940 and again in 1943—and its frequent reprisal by other artists has solidified it as a time- traversing classic. Covered innumerable times, “In the Mood” has endured in two versions, its original instrumental (the specific recording added to the Registry in 2004) and a version with lyrics. The music was written (or written down) by Joe Garland, a Tin Pan Alley tunesmith who also composed “Leap Frog” for Les Brown and his band. The lyrics are by Andy Razaf who would also contribute the words to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” For as much as it was an original work, “In the Mood” is also an amalgamation, a “mash-up” before the term was coined. It arrived at its creation via the mixture and integration of three or four different riffs from various earlier works. Its earliest elements can be found in “Clarinet Getaway,” from 1925, recorded by Jimmy O’Bryant, an Arkansas bandleader. For his Paramount label instrumental, O’Bryant was part of a four-person ensemble, featuring a clarinet (played by O’Bryant), a piano, coronet and washboard. Five years later, the jazz piece “Tar Paper Stomp” by Joseph “Wingy” Manone, from 1930, beget “In the Mood’s” signature musical phrase. -

Charmé Camden, New Jersey January 2021 CAPSTONE ABSTRACT A Change Is Gonna Come: A Critical Analysis Of The Benefits Of Musical Activism In The Civil Rights Movement by ERIN NICOLE NEAL Capstone Director: Dr. Stuart Z. Charmé The goal of this Capstone project is to understand what made protest music useful for political activists of the Civil Rights Movement. I will answer this question by analyzing music’s effect on activists through an examination of the songs associated with the movement, regarding lyrical content as well as its musical components. By examining the lyrical content, I will be evaluating how the lyrics of protest songs were useful for the activists, as well as address criticisms of the concrete impact of song lyrics of popular songs. Furthermore, examining musical components such as genre will assist in determining if familiarity in regards to the genre were significant. Ultimately, I found that music was psychologically valuable to political activists because music became an outlet for emotions they held within, instilled within listeners new emotions, became a beacon for psychological restoration and encouragement, and motivated listeners to carry out their activism. Furthermore, from a political perspective, the lyrics brought attention to the current socio-political problems and challenged social standards, furthered activists’ political agendas, persuaded the audience to take action, and emphasized blame on political figures by demonstrating that socio-political problems citizens grappled with were due to governmental actions as well as their inactions. -

She watched the pale liquid bubble up the crystal. That would be her third glass. With Carina nursing, she rarely drank at all, so she was really feeling the two glasses she’d already had. For his part, Nick had had one glass with her and then returned to his habitual scotch, leaving the rest of the Dom for her. It was like he was trying to get her drunk. Oktober 2021 in der Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg OneRepublic sind zurück – vier Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album ›Oh My My‹ kehren die US-amerikanischen Megastars mit neuer Musik im Gepäck zurück auf die Bühnen dieser Welt. Auf ihrer Tour im Herbst werden sie für vier Konzerte in Deutschland Halt machen, u.a. kommen Ryan und Co. am 23. Oktober 2021 auch nach Hamburg in die Barclaycard Arena! Die Geschichte von OneRepublic beginnt bereits 1996 in Colorado Springs, als sich Ryan Tedder und Zach Finkins in der High School begegnen und ihre erste gemeinsame Band gründen. Nach lokalen Gigs für Freunde & Familie zieht es die beiden jedoch auf unterschiedliche Unis und sie verlieren sich zwischenzeitlich aus den Augen. 2002 ist Tedder bereits erfolgreicher Songwriter sowie Produzent und die beiden treffen sich in LA wieder. Sofort gründen sie eine Band mit dem Namen Republic, schreiben Songs und werden nur 9 Monate später bei Columbia Records unter Vertrag genommen. Mittlerweile komplettiert durch Eddie Fisher (Drums), Brent Kutzle (Bass & Cello) und Drew Brown (Gitarre) und mit leicht verändertem Namen arbeiten sie mehr als zwei Jahre Jahre an ihrem Debutalbum, nur um zwei Monate vor dem geplanten Release von ihrer Plattenfirma fallengelassen zu werden. Nun könnte man denken dieser Rückschlag wäre für OneRepublic schwer zu verkraften gewesen, stattdessen wurde es der Startschuss für einen unvergleichlichen Aufstieg. Auf der mittlerweile historischen Plattform Myspace scharen sie immer mehr Fans um sich und werden so zur vielleicht berühmtesten Band ohne Plattenvertrag. Auch Produzent und Songwriter Timbaland, an dem zu dieser Zeit im Popgeschäft kein Weg vorbeiführt, lässt sich vom Talent der fünf anstecken, signt sie auf seinem eigenen Label und kreiert zusammen mit der Band eine neue Version des Songs „Apologize“, das als erste Single ihre Debuts „Dreaming Out Loud“ in der Originalversion eher mäßig erfolgreich war.
