Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. -

It includes the study of businessmen, landlords or even peers who were engaged in business and commerce as founders, owners or investors. It attempts to locate their social, historical and business characteristics in the context of the early 20th century, when Japan emerged as one of the economic powers of Asia, having passed through the transitional period of the late 19th century. The research focuses primarily on characteristics related to the development of Japanese business, and incorporates some comparisons with contemporary members of the European bourgeoisie, especially in Britain and Germany. -

Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada V Date ^-$7% A J^jJt cW^3 11 Abstract This thesis is an investigation of the Japanese philosopher Miki Kiyoshi and his involvement in the controversial Showa Kenkyu Kai, an organization charged with the task of formulating an intellectual foundation for Konoe Fumimaro's "New Political Order" and the "New Order in East Asia," the former project being a domestic program of reform and the latter being concerned with foreign policy. The study aims at elucidating on the complexities of the 1930s in Japan and suggests that previous attempts to place Miki and the Showa Kenkyu Kai into oversimplified categories has not aided our understanding of the period. -
Waiting for the Wind: Thirty-Six Poets of Japan's Late Medieval
Winner ofthe 1989 Donald Keene Center Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize Sor the Translation ofJapanese Literature The only collection in English of these works, Waitingfor the Wind presents more than four hundred poemsbythirty-six poets of Japan’s late medieval age (1250—1500). The poemsare all in the uta form (the thirty-onesyllable lyric) that was the major genre of court poetry throughouttheclassical period in Japan. Waiting for the Wind introduces this much neglected, yet very significant period through works of poets from the courtier Fujiwara No Teika, to the Monk Tonna, to Shotetsu. Most of the works are presented in English forthefirst time. In his historical introduction Steven Carter describes the period, especially the celebrated literary a dispute lasting 250 years between the families of two sons of a court poet. This feud began over an inheritance and had lasting impact upon the poetry of the period. Each poet in the collection is introduced by a short biographical sketch that places him orherin historical context and offers a short critical evaluation. Steven D. Carter is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of The Road to Komatsubara and Three Poets at Yuvama. Gerhart, Professor, History of Art and Architecture ii Copyright © by Jungeun Lee 2017 iii DISPLAYING AUTHORITY: ASHIKAGA FORMAL DISPLAY IN THE MUROMACHI PERIOD Jungeun Lee, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2017 This dissertation project investigates the socio-political and socio-economic contexts of the Ashikaga collection of Chinese paintings and objects and the associated development, function, and multifaceted meanings of formal decoration and display in medieval Japan. Scholars have been interested in the Ashikaga collection, kaisho reception halls, and shogunal art manuals (Kundaikan sōchōki) as either a way to understand the Japanese reception of Chinese paintings or to trace and reconstruct shoin-style architecture. However, formal display as an ensemble and a means of representing the patrons’ identities within the political and economic spheres of Kyoto have not been adequately addressed. My dissertation also investigates the relationship between the Ashikaga and their cultural advisors (dō bō shū ) who were in charge of the arrangement of the collection.
