Duda, Parochial Vicar MGE FM FR . AD Behold the Lamb of God This Sunday’s reading from the Gospel of John includes five different names or titles for Our Lord, besides Jesus. First we have “Lamb of God”, “Rabbi”, “Teacher”, “Messiah”, and Christ. Names were very important in the Hebrew life and culture, as was genealogy. As you read the Old Testament, you’ll notice that whenever a man is named, it is almost always in the form of (his name), son of (his father’s name). Genealogy and ancestry were very important to the Israelites because they wanted to emphasize and stress the importance of connection to the Beginning. Before the Fall of Adam, humanity enjoyed an uninterrupted and unimpeded relationship with God the Father, and the ancient Jews wanted to preserve that memory. But why is Jesus named or referred to in the New Testament in so many different ways? The answer to that is because there are so many different aspects about Him and how He is the fulfillment of prophesy. -

It is the eighth joint statement produced in the forty year history of the Lutheran–Roman Catholic Dialogue in Australia. The impetus for the present topic was the invitation of Pope John Paul II to engage in a patient and fraternal dialogue to find a way of exercising the Roman primacy which is open to a new situation. An early chapter of the document, “Talking Together in a New Situation,” sets out the new situation, not just for our respective churches, but also for our ecumenical relationship, which has evolved over these forty years. -

Pope Callixtus I
Pope Callixtus I Pope Callixtus I (died circa 223), also called Callistus I, was the bishop of Rome from c. 218 to his death c. 223.[2] He lived during the reigns of the Roman Emper- ors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus. He was martyred for his Christian faith and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. 1 Life His contemporaries and enemies, Tertullian and Hippolytus of Rome the author of Philosophumena, relate that Callixtus, as a young slave, was put in charge of collected funds by his master Carpophorus, funds which were given as alms by other Christians for the care of widows and orphans; Callixtus lost the funds and fled from Rome, but was caught near Portus. According to the tale, Callixtus jumped overboard to avoid capture but was rescued and taken back to his master. He was released at the request of the creditors, who hoped he might be able to recover some of the money, but was rearrested for fighting in a synagogue when he tried to borrow money or collect debts from some Jews.[2] Philosophumena claims that, denounced as a Christian, Callixtus was sentenced to work in the mines of Sardinia. He was released with other Christians at the request of Hyacinthus, a eunuch presbyter, who represented Marcia, the favourite mistress of Emperor Commodus. At this time his health was so weakened that his fellow Chris- tians sent him to Antium to recuperate and he was given a pension by Pope Victor I.[2] Callixtus was the deacon to whom Pope Zephyrinus en- trusted the burial chambers along the Appian Way. -

He is famous for the miraculous nature of his election, in which a dove is said to have descended on his head to mark him as the Holy Spirit's unexpected choice to become the next pope. He was succeeded by Cornelius. Most of his papacy was characterized by amicable relations with the imperial government, and Fabian could thus bring back to Rome the bodies of Pope Pontian and the antipope Hippolytus, both of whom had died in exile in the Sardinian mines, for Christian burial. It was also probably during his reign that the schism between the two corresponding Roman congregations of these leaders was ended. He was highly esteemed by Cyprian;[2] Novatian refers to his nobilissima memoriae, and he corresponded with Origen. One authority refers to him as Flavian. The Liber Pontificalis, a fourth-century document that survives in later copies, says that he divided Rome into deaconates and appointed secretaries to collect the records of the martyrs. He is also said, probably without basis, to have baptized the emperor Philip the Arab and his son. More plausible is the report in the Liberian Catalogue that he sent out seven "apostles to the Gauls" as missionaries. -

The violence was a culmination of doctrinal squabbles and power contests which erupted in the Roman church over the course of the fourth century.
