This move came for many by surprise. The announcement was welcomed by the Eritrean Authorities. On 9th of July both countries an- nounced a joint declaration of peace. All these developments have been documented in my first publication “A new Era: Eritrea – Ethiopia in Peace”1. Since then the drive to peace and cooperation between the two countries have gained mo- mentum. Furthermore, it spread all over the crises-ridden region of the Horn of Africa. Eritrea settled the longstanding dispute with Somalia. Djibouti and Eritrea decided to settle the border issue. Ethiopia urged Eritrean opposition groups to not work from Ethiopian terri- tory against Eritrea no more. Eritrea herself broke peace agreements with Ethiopian opposi- tion groups and their military wings. With the agreements with Somalia and Djibouti, Eritrea is next to the lifting of the UN-sanctions. Meanwhile the harbors of Massawa and Assab are open for Ethiopian imports and exports. The first Ethiopian ship to dock at Massawa was “Mekelle”, named after the capital city of Tigray – what a symbolic sign! Plans being made to build an oil-pipeline from Assab to Addis Abeba and to revamp the oil refinery of Assab.

  • This Is My Story
International Review of the Red Cross (2019), 101 (911), 459–479. Children and war doi:10.1017/S1816383120000120 “This is my story”: Children’s war memoirs and challenging protectionist discourses Helen Berents Helen Berents is an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow and Senior Lecturer in the School of Justice, Faculty of Law, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Abstract Protectionist frames of children as passive, uncomprehending victims characterize the international architecture of responding to children in war. However, stories such as those in children’s war memoirs draw attention to the agency and capacity of children to negotiate and navigate distinct traumas and experiences in war. Children experience particular vulnerabilities and risks in conflict zones and their potential as contributors to the solutions to war must also be taken seriously. Children’s authoritative voices in memoir writing reveal the limitations of protectionist- dominated approaches and offer a rationale for taking the participatory elements of international humanitarian mechanisms and responses to conflict more seriously. Such a move may help address the comprehensive silencing of children’svoicesinthe institutional architecture concerned with children in war. © icrc 2020 459 H. Berents Introduction “Who is Malala?” [the man] demanded. … My friends say he fired three shots, one after another. … By the time we got to the hospital my long hair and Moniba’s lap were full of blood. Who is Malala? I am Malala and this is my story.1 So concludes the prologue to I Am Malala, the memoir of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who campaigned for education in the Swat Valley and was shot by the Taliban at age 15 in October 2012.

Ethiopia - Researched and compiled by the Refugee Documentation Centre of Ireland on Tuesday 15 & Wednesday 16 May 2018 Treatment of the Oromo including applicable to the appointment of the new PM; Information on the situation of the army/government relating to the appointment of the new PM Minority Rights Group International states in a report issued in January 2018 that: “The Oromo community constitutes the largest ethnic group in the country, with some estimates suggesting they comprise between 25 and 40 per cent of the population. Though socially, economically and religiously diverse, Oromo are united by a shared language, also widely spoken in northern Kenya and parts of Somalia. Despite their large numbers, Oromo have suffered a long history of exclusion and forced assimilation by the Ethiopian government, leading to the decline of their pastoralist lifestyle” (Minority Rights Group International (January 2018) World Directory of Minorities and Indigenous Peoples - Ethiopia : Oromo). A publication released in March 2018 by Amnesty International states that: “Six months after the end of the State of Emergency Proclamation (2016) that had been in force for 10 months, the Council of Ministers of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia declared another state of emergency on 16 February 2018. The latest State of Emergency Proclamation (Proclamation), if adopted by the country’s federal parliament- House of Peoples Representatives (HPR), will remain in force for six months commencing from 16 February 2018” (Amnesty International (1 March 2018) Annex: Commentary on the State of Emergency Proclamation [AFR 25/7982/2018], p.1). This document also states that: “On 15 February Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn announced his decision to resign from office, which came just days after the release of hundreds of prisoners.
