  • The Fight for Balkan Latinity (II). the Aromanians After World War
ISSN 2039-9340 Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences Vol. 3 (11) November 2012 The Fight for Balkan Latinity (II). The Aromanians after World War Giuseppe Motta (Ph.D) Sapienza University of Rome Doi:10.5901/mjss.2012.v3n11p541 Abstract The article focuses on the Vlach question after the first World War, when the Balkan region was finally divided among the different national States and the Ottoman Empire collapsed. In this period the Aromanian communities had to find a new policy inside a new scenario and addressed towards different options represented by Albania, Italy and Romania. In a first time Vlachs also tried to create an autonomous principality of Pindus but this experience was short-lived and did not produce tangible results. On the contrary, during the interwar period the Vlachs consolidated their privileged relationship with Romania and established an influent group at Bucharest, where they partecipated to the internal political life even supporting the most radical movements such as Corneliu's Codreanu Iron Guard. Keywords: Aromanian, Vlach, Balkan, Albania, Romania. 1. Introduction. The Vlachs and the First World War. The history of the Vlachs in the Balkan regions was undoubtedly conditioned by the unstable and chaotic situation of the region, which during the troublesome period of the “Eastern Question” became a central area for the system of international relationships. The problems were particularly acute in the regions of Pindus, Epirus and Macedonia, and were naturally exacerbated by the constant atmosphere of war that the people of this area breathed for many years, at the end of XIX century and during the first decades of the XX.

BALCANICA POSNANIENSIA XXII/1 IUS VALACHICUM I Poznań – Bucharest 2015 VLACHS’IDENTITY AND THE CHALLENGES OF WORLD WAR II Io n u ţ nI s t o r Ab s t r A c t : During the Second World War, the Aromanians had their own, different perspectives over the com- batants and the political structure in the region. Some of them willingly adhered to the Italian project, support- ed the fascist army and liked the idea of a political-territorial organisation (their own state, Pind, or at least an Albanian-Romanian confederation) under the patronage of Rome. The existence of multiple power centres with particular interests and zealous leaders weakened the force of the discourse and damaged from the inside a state project which was doomed to fail anyway, in the conditions in which Italy seemed to have other plans. The pres- ence of many groups and leaders who disputed their supremacy, legitimacy and representation had consequenc- es on obtaining cultural and political rights on the territories organised by the Italians. The interventions of the Romanian government tried to answer some specific and immediate needs regarding food supplies or teaching materials, but they did not manage efficiently the material and human resources and could not stifle the local con- flicts for power and money.

ALBANIAN LITERATURE IN GREEK SCRIPT: THE EIGHTEENTH AND EARLY NINETEENTH-CENTURY ORTHODOX TRADITION IN ALBANIAN WRITING Robert Elsie 1. A schism of cultural identity Before the Turkish incursions of the late fourteenth century, Albania had often been the frontier between the spheres of influence of Roman Catholicism and Greek Orthodoxy. Though in the wake of the Crusades certain areas of northern Albania and in particular the Adriatic ports under the growing influence of the Serenissima had come to look to Rome, most of central and southern Albania remained derivatively Byzantine. To this day, the double-headed eagle of Byzantium, a symbol of this heritage, adorns the Albanian flag. As in antiquity, the Byzantine Greeks themselves never showed any exceptional interest in the non-Greek-speaking ‘’ of the Empire, and there can be no doubt that the wild mountain inhabitants of Albania constituted a prime example of what they must have considered barbarians beyond the pale of Hellenic civilization. Even after the Ottoman invasion of Europe and the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, the Greek population in the southern Balkans was not completely divested of the imperial heritage of two millennia of which it was so proud. Despite forced submission to Turkish rule, a certain continuity of ideas and customs reigned among the Greeks, fostered in particular by the Orthodox church, that very quintessence of languishing Byzantine grandeur. In southern Albania and Epirus, which throughout the centuries of Turkish rule and up to the present have had a mixed population of Albanian, Greek and Aromunian speakers, the Orthodox church remained an expression of Greek civilization and was exclusively devoted to the Greek language as a cultural bulwark against the invading hordes of Islam.

  • Religious Vocabulary in Aromanian Compared to Romanian
BALCANICA POSNANIENSIA XXII/1 IUS VALACHICUM I Poznań – Bucharest 2015 RELIGIOUS VOCABULARY IN AROMANIAN COMPARED TO ROMANIAN TOMASZ KLIM K OWS K I Anstract: The first layer of Aromanian Christian terminology is common for all the Balkan Romance languages. It contains a number of inherited Latin terms and some early assimilated Greek loanwords, due to the Oriental ori gin of Christianity. As for the later layer, the compound of terms related to ecclesiastical organisation and liturgy or to more sophisticated doctrinal concepts, the Balkan Romance languages substantially differ. In Romanian, it was formed on the basis of Slavonic (or Greek via Slavonic), which was used in the Romanian Orthodox Church by the 17th century. The liturgical language of the Aromanians was Greek (maybe except for Moscopole) and therefore, Aromanian mainly based its religious terminology on Greek, but also on Turkish and Albanian, which can be seen in the Aromanian Missal from the second half of the 18th century. In the next centuries, Aromanian religious vocabulary was strongly influenced by Romanian. The contemporary versions of religious texts, inclu ding the Bible (e.g. Caciuperi’s translations), introduce a series of Romanian terms instead of the old ones. • Multilingualism in the Central Balkans in Late Ottoman Times
SLAVICA HELSINGIENSIA 49 ED. Because Macedonia was partitioned and annexed by various nation states as late as 1913, the kind of complex multilingualism that had given birth to the famous Balkan sprachbund (linguistic area) survived there longer than in other regions of the Balkans. Therefore, we have more detailed descriptions of this multilingualism by scholars and travelers than in other regions. This paper concentrates on the linguistic situation in the Central Balkan area around Lakes Ohrid and Prespa and also in Pelagonia, with the city of Bitola as its center – areas where the linguistic situation reported in late Ottoman times was particularly complex. Pieces of historical information about multi- lingualism will be put into the context of the general linguistic situation in the Empire. In addition, the use of parallel columns in printed books, manuscripts, and private notebooks will be discussed as an iconic expression of the sociolinguistic situation of the time. 1 Introduction The Balkan linguistic area naturally has a center and a periphery. Although these are difficult to define in absolute terms, it can be seen that in the Central Balkans around Lakes Ohrid and Prespa, the co-territorial dialects of different languages possess the greatest number of convergent features (Lindstedt 2000, 232–234, forthcoming).

Przedsta- wiam zróżnicowane formy współczesnej arumuńskiej tożsamości etnicznej/narodowej. Rozważam dyskusje wokół pożądanych kierunków rozwoju społeczności, jej strategii kul- turowych i politycznych. Appearing already in the title of my article the name “Aromanians” binds a specific political option, of with which I am aware. The use of this term by the Aromanian elites in Europe is the basis of my decision for its use.
