CEU eTD Collection Abstract The dissertation is based on detailed empirical coverage of three publications, the IMIT yearbooks , the journal Libanon and the Ararát yearbooks that provide a representative sample of Hungarian Jewish scholarly and intellectual discourses in the second half of the Horthy era until right before the Hungarian Holocaust of 1944. In the course of the introduction, besides clarifying the subject, aim and scope of the work, a brief overview of modern Hungarian Jewish history is provided and the challenge of writing Hungarian Jewish intellectual history is explained and contextualized. Next to discussing the general characteristics of these three publications and providing overviews of their main contents, the six empirical chapters offer thematic analyses of Hungarian Jewish identity options, the ways internal and external relations were conceived, of alternative models of Jewish culture and assertions of defining values, of political-ideological platforms as well as of various stances on historicity and formulations of historical narratives.

Liberty Bridge (Szabadsag hid) Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd,is maybe the less attractive bridge in the city center ) is the one located at the southern end of city center, leading to Gellert Hill. The 333.6 m long bridge was built between 1894 and 1896. Its middle part was destroyed during World War II but it was rebuilt in 1945, and further restoration work was conducted to eliminate all war-related damage between 2007 and 2009. The bridge's main ornaments, four falcon-like bronze statues sitting on top of the bridge's four central masts (these are actually turuls, a mythological bird that represents power, strength and nobility in Hungary), were also restored. The bridge was originally named after the Emperor Franz Joseph, but it was renamed Liberty Bridge when the country was liberated from the Nazi occupation by the Soviet army at the end of World War II in 1945. The same year, the Liberation Monument was erected at the top of Gellert Hill. This imposing statue takes on the form of a woman holding a palm leaf above her head and can best be admired while crossing the bridge. 2.     CONSTRUCTING THE DANUBE MONARCHY: HABSBURG STATE-BUILDING IN THE LONG NINETEENTH CENTURY A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Robert Mevissen, M.A. Washington, DC December 11, 2017 CONSTRUCTING THE DANUBE MONARCHY: HABSBURG STATE-BUILDING IN THE LONG 19TH CENTURY Robert Shields Mevissen, M.A. Dissertation Advisor: James Shedel, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The Habsburg Monarchy existed until 1918 and its collapse ushered in a period of skepticism and, in some cases, antipathy toward the multinational state, which many contemporary observers portrayed as hopelessly backward. Recent scholarship has begun to reexamine the monarchy, reevaluating reforms that central, provincial, and local governments and bureaucracies implemented, which situated the imperial state favorably among its paradigmatically ‘more modern’ peers in Europe. While the historiography has increasingly revealed the social and political circumstances that precipitated and enabled such reforms, this dissertation traces another avenue of reform; the physical-natural world – and plans for its modification – which provided both an impetus and an opportunity for reform and modernization. Tracing technical and natural developments along the Danube, I argue that the river and its extensive tributary network provided the authorities in Vienna and Budapest a multifaceted site to inspire loyalty to the dynasty and government and a means to foster transnational connections between different industrial, commercial, social, and national groups in the monarchy. Modernizing arrangements on the Danube were not without their setbacks. A lack of political and financial cooperation kept earlier regulations and improvements local in scope, which perennial Danube floods frequently destroyed.
