Ingredients for 30 people: 25 tbsp. olive oil | 5 kg minced beef (or pork and beef mince) | 1.5 kg onions | salt and es meat stock (or 2.5 litres pepper | 3 tbsp. sweet paprika | 1 tbsp. cumin | 1 tbsp. coriander | 1 tbsp. oregano | fresh coriander leaves for serving and flavouring (optional) | 2.5 litr water and 5 stock cubes) | 5 big tins (850 g) strained or chopped tomatoes | 30 cloves of garlic | 15 to 20 small chilies (depending on taste and how spicy you want your chili) | 5 big tins (850 g) red kidney beans, | 5 big tins (850 g) white beans | some tinned sweetcorn (optional)

Method: Heat the oil in a big pot (approx. 15 litres, or several pots that add up to 15 litres) and add the mince. Stir continuously until evenly browned. On the international stage

Discussing current political issues with delegates from other countries and making decisions about draft resolutions are tasks normally reserved for high-level diplomats, but students from universities around the world, including FAU, get to do this too at the National Model United Nations (NMUN). You could be there at the negotiations in New York City representing a UN member state in various bodies, specialised agencies and committees. At the start of the winter semester, FAUMUN begins preparing for an international conference the next spring. Here you can learn negotiation strategies and how to structure a public speech. You will also find out about the United Nations, gain specialist knowl- edge about the country you’re representing and gain the professional skills of a diplomat. In spring, around 20 FAU students travel to the National Model United Nations in New York to represent ‘their country’ in negotiations.

Fränkisch: ‘Drei im Weggla’ – that´s how you order It’s German, but not as you know it the popular snack of three Nuremberg bratwursts in a bread roll. It’s not often you come across Franconian (Fränkisch) words in your German lessons, so if you hear things like fei, aweng or Gwerch, you might not have much of a clue what’s going on. To help you out, we’ve come up with a frisch! Franconian course for beginners.

Understanding Franconians

There is no single Franconian dialect as such. Vocabularies and pronunciation even differ between Erlangen and Nuremberg. Nonetheless, we’ve put together a short list of words to help you better understand this particular corner of the German-speaking world.

Allmächd! Franconian expression of astonishment, consternation; the standard German equivalent would be Allmächtiger Gott! (God almighty!)
