WILDLAND PROGRESSIVE HOSE LAY

OBJECTIVES:

1. To deploy a continuous, systematic supply of hose on a wildland fire. 2. To answer general questions about engine company wildland skills.

EQUIPMENT:

1. Wildland Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) a. Helmet with wildland shroud b. Goggles c. Gloves d. Long-sleeve cotton shirt e. Work uniform pants f. Yellow wildland jacket and pants g. Work boots 2. H.T. Radios 3. Hose packs a. Three 1 ½" hose packs (either packsacks with rolled hose or Gnass packs) b. Two 1" hose packs 4. Web belts containing a minimum of: a. b. Canteen c. DESCRIPTION OF EVOLUTION:

1. Personnel are to wear full wildland personal protective equipment (P.P.E.). Captain shall carry H.T. radios.

2. Answer general questions about engine company wildland operations.

3. Captain assesses fuel, weather, topography and fire behavior. Captain conducts safety/LCES briefing and makes assignments.

4. Attack team don hose packs and equipment.

5. Attack team establishes anchor point by either:

(a) Removing structure tip from "D" handle, installing a 10-40 KK attack nozzle on the 1 3/4" preconnected line, charging, leading in and extending line in a flanking action.

Or:

(b) By using a 1 " reel line with a 10-40 KK attack nozzle (minimum) to provide a quick initial attack while the 1 3/4" preconnected line with a gated "Y" is led in dry to the anchor point.

6. FFS places pump in gear, engages the class "A" foam system and charges line.

7. Attack team installs 1 ½" hose packs and extends the attack (trunk) line to contain the fire. Tees or wyes are to be placed in the trunk line at 200' intervals (100' in steep or heavily vegetated terrain).

8. 1" hose packs shall be installed on tees, as needed, to provide lateral lines for hotspots, spot fires and mop-up.

9. The attack team shall demonstrate proficiency at kinking the 1 ½" hose manually when hose clamp is not used.

DEVELOP A PLAN

1. Assess fuel; weather, topography and fire behavior.

2. Develop plan of attack. Assign personnel.

3. (L) Assign a lookout.

4. (C) Discuss methods of communication.

5. (E) Identify escape routes.

6. (S) Identify safety zones.

FIRE ATTACK

1. Prepare hose packs and assemble tools.

2a. Establish anchor point at apparatus. Remove structure attack nozzle from 1 3/4" preconnected line and install wildland nozzle. Charge and lead in line in a flanking action.

OR

2b. Remove structure attack nozzle from 1 3/4" preconnected line and install gated "Y". Charge and lead in the reel line to conduct a quick initial attack. Lead in the 1 3/4" line dry to establish an anchor point. 11

3. Install one 1 ½" hose pack to extend trunk line; charge and extend the line.

4. Install tees/wyes at 200' intervals, 100' in steep or heavily vegetated terrain.

5. Install second 1 ½" hose pack. Charge and extend line.

6. Install two 1" lateral lines with nozzles on tees using one 1 " hose pack for hotspots, spot fires, and mop-up.

7. Demonstrate manual kinking method to shut off the flow of water on the 1 ½" trunk line.
