GENERAL FACTS

Language The official language of is English.

Population Located in the southwest corner of Australia, Perth is the capital city of Western Australia, Australia’s largest state, with a population of approximately 1 million people.

Climate With more hours of sunshine than any other Australian capital city, Perth enjoys a true Mediterranean climate. This means that for most of the year, the weather is fine and sunny, and even during the short mild winter the sun is often shining. It is because of these endless summers that many Perth activities revolve around the outdoors.

Regardless of whether it is warm or a little on the chilly side in Perth, strong UV rays means that spending time outdoors without wearing sunscreen can lead to sunburn. If you are planning a day of outdoor activities, it is recommended you wear a hat and apply a high factor sunscreen.

Clothing Casual, lightweight clothes are generally worn on in Western Australia. However more formal attire (e.g. collared shirt and closed toe shoes) may be required in some nightclubs and restaurants.

Universal outlets for 110 volts (shavers only) are standard in hotels, apartments and motels.

Water As all Western Australian drinking water is treated to the latest Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, bottled drinking water is not essential.

Tipping Tipping is not expected in Perth; however it is acceptable to leave a small amount should you feel you have received exceptional service.

Telephones Local phone calls are charged at a standard rate of 50 cents per call with interstate, international and mobile phone calls charged by the duration of the call. Hotel charges for phone calls may vary from the standard rates so you are advised to check with hotel staff.

Terminals at Perth Airport Terminal 1 (International) is on the far side of the runway from the city, and the Domestic Terminals. The international terminal is a long way from the domestic terminals and can’t be walked (10 mins taxi or bus ride).

Terminal 2 (Domestic) is located on the western side of the airfield. The airlines operating from Terminal 2 are Qantas, Qantas Link and Jetstar.

Terminal 3 (Domestic) is adjacent to Terminal 2. The airlines operating from Terminal 3 are , OzJet, Skywest Airlines and Virgin Blue. These 2 terminals are joined together and can be walked in 3 minutes.

Terminal Transfers Passengers can transfer from International to Domestic terminals and vice versa by taxi or by the dedicated Inter-terminal transport service. A Terminal Transfer Bus service Connect is available between Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic) operating between the hours of 0300 and 0200 each day, to coincide with the arrival and departure of international airlines.

The Inter Terminal bus may only be used if you have an ongoing airline ticket.

ON ARRIVAL

West Oz Welcomers (WOWs) The West Oz Welcomers are a volunteer group that are available at both the international and domestic airports to welcome and assist visitors to Western Australia. They can help you with any enquiries you may have. Look out for them near the baggage collection points wearing their uniquely Australian Akubra hats.

Taxis Taxi ranks are located outside Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic) and operate 24 hours a day. You may be asked to pay your fare in advance. There is no extra charge for luggage, although taxis will add an A$2.00 ground transport charge for Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 & 3.

As a general guide, taxi rides to Perth city will take 20-30 minutes and will cost approximately $33.00 from terminal 1 and $26 from terminals 2 and 3.

Perth Airport City Shuttle The Perth Airport City Shuttle has several convenient pick-up points located near hotels, motels and hostels in Perth. At Terminal 1 (International), the Perth Airport City Shuttle meets every arrival within 45 minutes of customs clearance. This service is also available at the domestic terminals, with the Perth Airport City Shuttle meeting each domestic arrival within 30 minutes of luggage collection. Transfer time to the city 20-30 minutes.

Public Transport Bus: Transperth operate bus services to and from the domestic terminals at Perth Airport. Please note that Transperth does not operate bus services to Terminal 1 at Perth Airport.

Train: There is no train station at either terminal, but the main railway station in the city centre can be reached by the Perth Airport City Shuttle.

Car Rental If you require a rental car while staying in Perth, there are car rental companies at Perth Airport available to assist you when you arrive. PERTH TRANSPORT

Car parks Most street parking in the city of Perth has time restrictions and associated fees. Several car parks are located within the central business district. You can expect to pay about $2.50 per hour for inner city parking with daily and early bird rates also available in most car parks.

Driving In Australia driving is on the LEFT hand side of the road, and ALL passengers are required (by law) to wear seatbelts or be fitted with an appropriate child restraint device. The speed limit in built up areas is 50km/h, unless otherwise sign posted and varies between 50km/h and 110km/h in non-built up areas and motorways. When driving in Australia, you are required to be in possession of a valid Australian or international drivers licence.

Taxi All taxis are meter operated by time and distance, and operate twenty-four hours a day. Taxis indicate they are vacant by illuminating their sign on the roof. Designated taxi ranks are located around the central city for safe and convenient travel. Taxis may also be hailed on the street or ordered by telephone.

Buses A Free Transit Zone (FTZ) operates within the City of Perth boundaries. You may travel on any Transperth bus or train as often as you want within the boundary limits for free. FTZ signposts are displayed on the route limits. For travel outside the FTZ, you may purchase a ticket from the driver.

Trains From Perth Train Station, train services run on five lines to Armadale, Fremantle, Clarkson, Midland and the new Mandurah line. Train tickets may be purchased from machines at each train station. For trains, the FTZ boundaries are City West on the Fremantle line, Claisebrook on the Midland and Armadale lines, and Esplanade Station on the Mandurah Line.

CATs Moving around the city of Perth is easy – and free. The modern Central Area Transit (CAT) buses running on three routes are a free service providing convenient travel around the city. CAT bus stops have distinctive stands and real-time passenger information. The Red Cat travels in an east-west loop from Queens Gardens in East Perth to Outram Street in West Perth. The Blue CAT travels in a north-south loop from the Barrack Street Jetty to Northbridge. The Yellow CAT operates in a loop from the Entertainment Centre to East Perth.

Ferries Ferries operate regular services between the city and South Perth.

DayRider A dayrider ticket entitles you to unlimited all day travel on all Transperth services after 9.00am weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays. PERTH SERVICES

Shopping The City of Perth has almost 1000 retailers specialising in a range of goods from designer fashion to home wares, gourmet cuisine and technology. The vibrant city malls (Hay Street Mall & Murray Street Mall) are the best place to shop with all your needs in one place. Most souvenir shops are found in Barrack Square and the Hay Street Mall. Retail hours are usually 9am – 5pm with extended trading hours on Friday with shops open until 9pm. Sunday shops are generally open from 11am – 5pm (excluding public holidays).

Postal services Perth’s General Post Office (GPO), operated by Australia Post, is located in Forrest Place in the heart of the city. It is open weekdays from 8.30am to 5pm and from 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday. Various smaller outlets are scattered throughout the city and operate on similar trading hours.

Banks and Currency Exchange Most banks in Perth’s CBD are open Monday to Thursday 9.30am – 4pm and on Friday from 9.30am – 5pm. Automatic teller machines (ATM) or cash points can be easily found all over the city with most giving cash advances on credit cards. Traveller’s cheques and foreign currency can be exchanged at most Australian bank branches as well as specialised currency exchange outlets throughout the city and at Perth Airport.

Laundry and Dry Cleaning Dry cleaning services are available from most hotels and can also be found on Lake Street and Milligan Street. For self service laundry, the East Perth Laundrobar (242 Hay Street) is open seven days a week from 6.30am – 10.30pm and Globe Laundromat (561 Wellington Street) is open between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week.

City of Perth Information Kiosk The staff at the City of Perth Information Kiosk, located at the junction of Forrest Place and Murray Street Mall, are on hand daily from 9.30am – 4.30pm, except for Sunday (11am – 3.30pm) and public holidays (closed), to answer questions about the city. Armed with all the latest information on events, activities, shopping and attractions in the City of Perth, they also supply free resources including handy City maps and self-guided tour brochures.

They also provide a free city walking tours (approximately 90 minutes). All tours depart from the City of Perth Information Kiosk, at 11am and 2pm daily, except Saturday and Sunday where only one tour a day operates. Bookings are not required, unless for group of 15 or more.

WA Visitors Centre For the greater metropolitan and regional areas, the Western Australia Visitor Centre has the most up to date information. It is located in the heart of the city near the train station in Forrest Place. Friendly staff will offer unbiased information and a free booking service for attractions, destinations, accommodation, tours and car hire in Western Australia.

Cycling Venues There are various cycle paths around Perth, along the Swan River and the Coast. Here are two links of some cycling paths that may be useful – Burswood Park and Perth/Fremantle.

NOTE: By law, you are not permitted to ride on the freeways in Perth. Therefore you will be unable to ride on the LDWC bike course before the event.

Running Venues Once again, in Perth the cycling paths double as running/walking paths. The paths around the Swan River, Kings Park and along the coast are all suitable for the public to use as running paths.
