Population Located in the southwest corner of Australia, Perth is the capital city of Western Australia, Australia’s largest state, with a population of approximately 1 million people. Climate With more hours of sunshine than any other Australian capital city, Perth enjoys a true Mediterranean climate. This means that for most of the year, the weather is fine and sunny, and even during the short mild winter the sun is often shining. It is because of these endless summers that many Perth activities revolve around the outdoors. If you are planning a day of outdoor activities, it is recommended you wear a hat and apply a high factor sunscreen. Notes: $100, $50, $20, $10, $5 Coins: $1, $2, 50 cents ($0.50), 20 cents ($0.20), 10 cents ($0.10) and 5 cents ($0.05) All major credit cards are accepted in Australia Clothing Casual, lightweight clothes are generally worn on in Western Australia. However more formal attire (e.g. collared shirt and closed toe shoes) may be required in some nightclubs and restaurants. Time Western Australia is on Western Standard time (WST) - GMT +8 hours Electricity (volts) The mains electricity in Australia is 240/250 Volts AC 50HZ (frequency). Universal outlets for 110 volts (shavers only) are standard in hotels, apartments and motels. 2 Water As all Western Australian drinking water is treated to the latest Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, bottled drinking water is not essential. Tipping Tipping is not expected in Perth; however it is acceptable to leave a small amount should you feel you have received exceptional service. Telephones Local phone calls are charged at a standard rate of 50 cents per call with interstate, international and mobile phone calls charged by the duration of the call. Hotel charges for phone calls may vary from the standard rates so you are advised to check with hotel staff. Pre-Paid sim cards for mobile phones can be purchased throughout the city from phone retailing outlets. 3 GETTING HERE Perth Airport is 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) east of the city and has two separate terminals for International and Domestic flights. The international terminal is a long way from the domestic terminals and can’t be walked (10 mins taxi or bus ride). Terminal 2 (Domestic) is located on the western side of the airfield. The airlines operating from Terminal 2 are Qantas, Qantas Link and Jetstar. Terminal 3 (Domestic) is adjacent to Terminal 2. The airlines operating from Terminal 3 are Alliance Airlines, OzJet, Skywest Airlines and Virgin Blue. These 2 terminals are joined together and can be walked in 3 minutes. Terminal Transfers Passengers can transfer from International to Domestic terminals and vice versa by taxi or by the dedicated Inter-terminal transport service. A Terminal Transfer Bus service Connect is available between Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic) operating between the hours of 0300 and 0200 each day, to coincide with the arrival and departure of international airlines. Airport No: +61 (0)8 9277 7537. 4 ON ARRIVAL West Oz Welcomers (WOWs) The West Oz Welcomers are a volunteer group that are available at both the international and domestic airports to welcome and assist visitors to Western Australia. They can help you with any enquiries you may have. Look out for them near the baggage collection points wearing their uniquely Australian Akubra hats. Taxis Taxi ranks are located outside Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic) and operate 24 hours a day. You may be asked to pay your fare in advance. There is no extra charge for luggage, although taxis will add an A$2.00 ground transport charge for Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 & 3. As a general guide, taxi rides to Perth city will take 20-30 minutes and will cost approximately $33.00 from terminal 1 and $26 from terminals 2 and 3. Perth Airport City Shuttle The Perth Airport City Shuttle has several convenient pick-up points located near hotels, motels and hostels in Perth. At Terminal 1 (International), the Perth Airport City Shuttle meets every arrival within 45 minutes of customs clearance. This service is also available at the domestic terminals, with the Perth Airport City Shuttle meeting each domestic arrival within 30 minutes of luggage collection. Transfer time to the city 20-30 minutes. Public Transport Bus: Transperth operate bus services to and from the domestic terminals at Perth Airport. Please note that Transperth does not operate bus services to Terminal 1 at Perth Airport. To view timetables for buses to and from the domestic terminals visit www.transperth.wa.gov.au. Train: There is no train station at either terminal, but the main railway station in the city centre can be reached by the Perth Airport City Shuttle. Car Rental If you require a rental car while staying in Perth, there are car rental companies at Perth Airport available to assist you when you arrive. The car rental customer service desks are located on the ground floor of Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic). Several car parks are located within the central business district. You can expect to pay about $2.50 per hour for inner city parking with daily and early bird rates also available in most car parks. Driving In Australia driving is on the LEFT hand side of the road, and ALL passengers are required (by law) to wear seatbelts or be fitted with an appropriate child restraint device. The speed limit in built up areas is 50km/h, unless otherwise sign posted and varies between 50km/h and 110km/h in non-built up areas and motorways. When driving in Australia, you are required to be in possession of a valid Australian or international drivers licence. Taxi All taxis are meter operated by time and distance, and operate twenty-four hours a day.
