  • The Entrenchment of Sinhalese Nationalism in Post-War Sri Lanka by Anne Gaul
An Opportunity Lost The Entrenchment of Sinhalese Nationalism in Post-war Sri Lanka by Anne Gaul Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervised by: Dr. Andrew Shorten Submitted to the University of Limerick, November 2016 Abstract This research studies the trajectory of Sinhalese nationalism during the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa from 2005 to 2015. The role of nationalism in the protracted conflict between Sinhalese and Tamils is well understood, but the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009 has changed the framework within which both Sinhalese and Tamil nationalism operated. With speculations about the future of nationalism abound, this research set out to address the question of how the end of the war has affected Sinhalese nationalism, which remains closely linked to politics in the country. It employs a discourse analytical framework to compare the construction of Sinhalese nationalism in official documents produced by Rajapaksa and his government before and after 2009. A special focus of this research is how through their particular constructions and representations of Sinhalese nationalism these discourses help to reproduce power relations before and after the end of the war. It argues that, despite Rajapaksa’s vociferous proclamations of a ‘new patriotism’ promising a united nation without minorities, he and his government have used the momentum of the defeat of the Tamil Tigers to entrench their position by continuing to mobilise an exclusive nationalism and promoting the revival of a Sinhalese-dominated nation. The analysis of history textbooks, presidential rhetoric and documentary films provides a contemporary empirical account of the discursive construction of the core dimensions of Sinhalese nationalist ideology.

  • Tourism Industry Supply Chain Challenges in Anuradhapura
Proceeding of International Conference on Contemporary Management - 2015 (ICCM-2015), pp 1021-1036 TOURISM INDUSTRY SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES IN ANURADHAPURA Munasinghe, U. ABSTRACT Anuradhapura is a remarkable city to gain more tourist attraction in a productive way. Few cities in Sri Lanka can offer to travelers such a great combination of historical experience, sacred monument features stunning scenery, tanks, and ancient Buddhist temples in such a compact location. But the issue is the entrepreneurs who involve in tourism industry at Anuradhapura, not processing through an effective supply chain. Entrepreneurs provide just the hotels, restaurants as accommodations, foods and other goods and services but they have forgotten to contribute their services to introduce arts, crafts and other values of the city. They do not combine the historical capacity with special attractions of Anuradhapuara community, nature trails and outdoors activities, festivals and special events, traditions and customs and unique travelling opportunities. Tourism is promoted as a stress reliever. Unfortunately, what should be and what is in Anuradhapura are often very different experiences. By this research, it has planned to collect information from both the entrepreneurs and foreigners by questionnaires from survey about the challenges they face and will provide possible solutions. In Anuradhapura, travelers face imprecise language, fine print that does not deliver what is promised, add-on fees, poor customer service and angry employees, sub-quality food, and buildings that are tidy or even sanitary. Because of this dull supply chain of the tourism industry, tourists who come to the city, visit the places by their own, without any guidance and support, cannot gain an adequate experience which harm the industry and ruin the reputation of the city.

  • The Atamasthana at Anuradhapura: a Brief Historical Survey
Rohana (1991) 3 - 77 - 86 The Atamasthana at Anuradhapura: A Brief Historical Survey — U. B. K a ru n a n a n d a The term Atamasthana connotes the eight places in Anuradhapura (Sri Lanka) sacred to Buddhists: the Sri Mahabodhi (Udamaluwa), the Lovamaha- paya, the Ruwanweliseya, theThuparamaya, the Mirisawetiya, the Abhayagiriya, the Jetavanaramaya and the Lankaramaya. They are, however not identical with the eight places that constituted the Atamasthana during the early Anu radhapura period. Buddhists in Sri Lanka have always regarded these sites with deep vene ration, and are used to make annual pilgrimages to them. Records of the British officials of the early years of the last century show that this practice continued even after the British captured the kingdom of Kandy, to which Anuradhapura belonged. Davy in 1818, three years after the subjugation of the Kandyan Kingdom, recorded that “Anuradhapura, so long capital of Ceylon, is now a small mean village in’the midst of a desert. A large tank, numerous stone pillars, two or three immense tumular (probably old Dagabas) are its principal re mains. It is still considered a sacred spot and is a place of pilgrimage’- (levers, 1899, 66) Even in 1834, Skinner found that the road from Kandy to Anuradhapura “was crowded with pilgrims on their way to the sacred Bo-tree” and that Anuradh pura “was alive with people.” (Ibid. 214) The first reference to the term ata masthana appears in the Sinhala prose work Pujavaliya (13th century.). Till then, though one finds references to the existence of eight sacred places at Anu radhapura, (MV.
