Copyright 1994 by Andrews University Press ISSN 003-2980 CHANGE—THE UNCHANGING REALITY Heraclitus observed that "there is nothing permanent except change." If Cardinal Newman is to be believed—"Here below to live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often"—we at AUSS should be approaching perfection! Unfortunately, "Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better" (Richard Hooker). In our estimation, some changes are downright painful. Kenneth Strand, editor-in-chief of AUSS from 1974 to 1987, and co-editor from then on, retired on July 1, 1994. Strand entered the Seventh-day Adventist ministry in Michigan in 1952. His teaching career began in 1959 at his alma mater, Emmanuel Missionary College—today Andrews University. At the time of his retirement he was Professor of Church History, chair of his department, and secretary of the Ph.D.- Th.D. Committee of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. A true Renaissance man, Strand is interested in and well versed in many fields; for his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1958) he majored in church history and minored in Old Testament. The subjects on which he has written for A USS—Revelation, Roman history, Early Church, Reformation, German Bibles, among others—show the breadth of his well-cultivated intellect and insatiable curiosity. The AUSS index shows 36 articles and 69 book reviews written by Strand. An inveterate worker, he has been known to sit up all night to get an article or dissertation edited. As an ordained minister, Strand has been actively involved in the ministerial formation of seminary students. His belief in the potential of his students has empowered them for learning and service. To me, as well as to many others, he has been a mentor and friend. Although he has retired, Strand still is actively involved in the Ph.D.-Th.D. program and still serves as AUSS Editor Emeritus. We wish Dr. Strand a long, active, and happy retirement! Jerry Moon has joined the AUSS staff as associate editor and book review editor. Moon served as a Seventh-day Adventist minister for 10 years before coming to Andrews University for doctoral studies. While studying here, he endeared himself to the church history department by his excellent teaching. Thus, when he completed his Ph.D. in Adventist Studies in 1993, he was invited to join the faculty of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Since then he has been working on an additional master's degree in history at Western Michigan University. As editor of student publications in college, Moon wondered whether he 164 EDITORIAL 165 should be a pastor, teacher, or editor. Now he is all three! Jerry brings to AUSS young blood and new ideas. We welcome our new Moon and hope he will wax and not wane! A very unwelcome and tragic change in the AUSS staff comes from the death of Gerhard F. Hasel in a traffic accident in Utah on August 11. At the time of his death, Hasel was associate editor of AUSS. His association with AUSS had been long and fruitful. From 1973 to 1980 he was circulation manager; from 1973 onwards his name appeared on the masthead as associate editor. Fifteen articles and 34 reviews by Hasel have been published in AUSS. Shortly before his death, he completed a series of three articles, the first of which appears in this issue of AUSS. We also present a life sketch and a select bibliography of Hasel's works. To his wife and children, we at AUSS extend our deepest sympathy. With them we look forward to the day of that greatest of changes, when the "dead will be raised imperishable" and death will be "swallowed up in victory" (1Cor 15:51-55). A much less traumatic change is the transition of AUSS from three to two issues a year beginning with volume 33 in 1995.

    Orlov Dark Mirrors RELIGIOUS STUDIES Azazel and Satanael in Early Jewish Demonology Dark Mirrors is a wide-ranging study of two central figures in early Jewish demonology—the fallen angels Azazel and Satanael. Andrei A. Orlov explores the mediating role of these paradigmatic celestial rebels in the development of Jewish demonological traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to later Jewish mysticism, such as that of the Hekhalot and Shi ur Qomah materials. Throughout, Orlov makes use of Jewish pseudepigraphical materials in Slavonic that are not widely known. Dark Mirrors Orlov traces the origins of Azazel and Satanael to different and competing mythologies of evil, one to the Fall in the Garden of Eden, the other to the revolt of angels in the antediluvian period. Although Azazel and Satanael are initially representatives of rival etiologies of corruption, in later Jewish and Christian demonological lore each is able to enter the other’s stories in new conceptual capacities. Dark Mirrors also examines the symmetrical patterns of early Jewish demonology that are often manifested in these fallen angels’ imitation of the attributes of various heavenly beings, including principal angels and even God himself. By S.N.Strutt We have all read the very exciting books of ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’ by R.R.Tolkien and the ‘CHRONICLES OF NARNIA’ by C.S.Lewis at some time or another. Or at least we have seen the films. There are many mystical things, as well as mythological things mentioned in these books that are both very strange and almost seem magical. In Lord of the Rings we have massive Giants and Ogres. We have Dragons in both Lord of the Rings and a Hobbits tale. We have Wizards in the Chronicles of Narnia & we also have a ‘Wicked Snow-queen Witch, who makes the world cold and snowy all the time and does not allow Christmas anymore. Anyone who crosses her is turned to stone. She also has an army of hybrids, trolls, chimeras of all sorts including Centaurs and Minotaurs. In the Books of Narnia, we also have the strange ‘Windows to other worlds and different Times’ through such things as paintings. What if I told you that an ancient story of such places and strange happenings has already been written long ago in the very far past, upon this planet. Or let’s say very similar happenings. In my book ‘Enoch Insights’ we will indeed go back to the land of ‘MIDDLE-EARTH’ and find out that a land almost identical to that described in the Lord of the Rings happened on the earth before the great Flood of Noah and is mentioned in great detail in the Book of Enoch, which was written around 5000+ years ago.

Moscicke, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2019 Ancient Christians often interpreted the death of Jesus through the lens of Leviticus 16, conceiving Jesus as both the immolated “goat for Yahweh,” whose blood the high priest brought into the Holy of Holies once a year to purge Israel’s sins, and the “goat for Azazel,” which bore Israel’s iniquity into the wilderness far away from God’s presence. Such an understanding of Jesus’s death did not strike theologians such as the author of the Epistle of Barnabas, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Origen, Jerome, Cyril of Alexandria, and the earliest Markan commentator as strange. Hasel died Thursday afternoon, August 11, in an automobile accident near Ogden, Utah. He was returning in a rented automobile to his mo- tel where he was scheduled to participate in the annual meetings of the Biblical Research Institute Science Committee (BRISCO) when he was killed. At the time of his death Dr. Hasel was the J. N. Andrews Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Theology and the Director of the Ph.D./Th.D. programs at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, Michi- gan. Many considered Dr. Hasel the foremost theologian in the church today, an opinion that I fully share. Since JATS plans a future memorial issue in honor of Dr. Hasel, I will just note that in addition to being a past President of ATS and its current vice-president for publications, Gerhard Hasel was my personal friend. Therefore, I would like to share with our readers a few of my personal thoughts about my dear friend, Gerhard, that it was my privilege to share with his family and friends at the funeral service in Berrien Springs: On August 16th, I came off the trail into the valley floor of Yosemite Na- tional Park.
