K. S. Iyengar, an invaluable resource for understanding the medical benefits of body bends and stretches. More recently, I would like to acknowledge Ana Forrest, yoga master extraordinaire, for her out- standing work in transforming bodies with apparently simple moves—something her yoga has much in common with the Daoyin practices studied in this book. On a third level, I wish to thank John Loupos, healer and martial arts in- structor of Cohasset, Massachusetts, for not only helping me with a bursitic shoulder but in the process introducing me to Hanna Somatics, thereby opening a completely new way of looking at exercise and the body that has pervaded the work on this book. Not only transforming my own practice, his guidance—in his book and in numerous patiently recorded audio sessions— has helped to create a clearer image of what needs to be done to a body to effect relaxation and healing. In a more academic and theoretical vein, I would like to thank several of my graduate students for doing outstanding work and raising my awareness and un- derstanding of different aspects of physical practice and healing. Stephen Jacko- wicz, highly gifted acupuncturist and graduate of Boston University in 2003, did outstanding work on the absorption of qi, successfully applying information from medieval Daoist materials to a twentieth-century patient. His in-depth analysis of how medieval Chinese understood the workings of the inner body and his thorough medical and therapeutic analysis of the process of qi -absorption have greatly influenced my interpretation of this rather advanced aspect of Daoyin practice. Another graduate student whose work and help were invaluable was Shawn Arthur, who graduated from Boston University in 2006. His dissertation is on the dietary and fasting techniques of Daoists and modern qigong practitioners, ex- amining them both on the basis of traditional concepts and in terms of modern physiology and pharmacology. His work on fasting and the replacing of ordinary food and drink with qi provided me with great insights into the Chinese under- standing of the body’s structure and the role of breathing and diet in the context of healing exercises. Besides aiding this project with his knowledgeable expertise, Shawn has also been invaluable in assisting the actual manuscript preparation. A third graduate student who provided knowledge and inspiration is Heidi Nugent at the Union Institute, Ohio. She has just completed a pathbreaking dis- sertation on breath, its understanding in different cultures, and the various ways people use (and abuse) it to create health or sickness. As she moved along in her in-depth study, she has greatly increased my understanding and awareness of breathing physiology and the role it plays in traditional forms of healing. Beyond the background practice and information necessary for the completion of this book, I also received enormous support and encouragement in the course of manuscript preparation. First, in the summer of 2005, I was given the great chance to present my findings on Chinese healing exercises to experts at the annual conven- tion of the National Qigong Association (NQA) in Boulder, Colorado.

Ecoutons par exemple ce discours tenu par le personnage d’un roman chinois du XVIIe siècle à un groupe de femmes qu’il a eu la surprise de rencontrer sur le chemin d’un temple où elles comptent faire leurs dévotions : 「是誰家沒禮義男子,放縱閨門婦女外游?有這等不知羞婦女,借口燒香,庵觀混雜。雖 然是釋門,清淨慈悲,普度善男信女,只恐藏奸導欲,引惹市井無賴頑心。女菩薩有這善 心,何不守婦道,不出閨門,在家堂焚香拜聖;何必瞞丈夫,信僧尼,入寺觀,出身露面 ,見像焚修! 」 « Quelle est donc cette famille dont les hommes, sans principes ni bienséance, laissent leurs femmes se promener librement ?     Flesh Bodies, Stiff Corpses, and Gathered Gold: Mummy Worship, Corpse Processing, and Mortuary Ritual in Contemporary Taiwan DOUGLAS MATTHEW GILDOW Harvard University It is well known that Han fear the metaphysical pollution they associate with death and especially corpses. Traditionally they believe family members of the recently deceased are temporarily polluted and those who work handling corpses are permanently polluted; people try to avoid such polluted others for fear that sickness or other unfortunate events may follow contact. 1 Yet strewn across the countryside of both China and Taiwan, and scattered throughout accounts in Buddhist historical texts, are mummified corpses venerated as deities: granting requests, sending dreams, enshrined, worshipped, often gilded, sometimes installed inside or below a religious statue or decorated to look indistinguishable or nearly so from a statue. What happens to most bodily remains? How is it that most corpses are feared, whereas certain others are worshipped? Are these divergent evaluations of corpses due to conflicting religious systems, or does it depend mainly on the identity of the corpse? The following article focuses on these questions as they apply to contemporary Taiwan. First, I describe in detail corpses that are worshipped, since their existence is less recognized or is mistakenly assumed to be nothing but a Buddhist aberration within an otherwise universal pattern of corpse avoidance. Jones, Chair My dissertation explores a cultural history of the body as reflected in meditative and therapeutic forms of the Chinese martial arts in nineteenth and early twentieth-century China. Precursors of the more familiar present-day taijiquan 太極拳 and qigong 氣功, these forms of martial arts techniques focus on the inward cultivation of qi 氣 and other apparently ineffable energies of the body. They revolve around the harnessing of “internal strength” or neigong 內功. These notions of a strength derived from an invisible, intangible, yet embodied qi came to represent a significant counterweight to sports, exercise science, the Physical Culture movement, physiology, and other Western ideas of muscularity and the body that were being imported into China at the time. What role would such competing discourses of the body play in shaping contemporary ideas of embodiment? How would it raise the stakes in an era already ideologically charged with the intertwined issues of nationalism and imperialism, and so-called scientific modernity and indigenous tradition? This study is an inquiry into the epistemological and ontological ramifications of the idea of neigong internal strength, tracing the popular spread of the idea and its impact in late Qing and Republican China vernacular discourse.

It starts with the etymological study of the term ‘friend,’ and the value attached to it, followed by an examination of the concept of friendship in a broader socio-historical context—in particular the Confucian role ethics and the Chinese literati tradition; finally it briefly reflects on the impact of this concept on Chinese society today. In traditional Chinese ethics, an individual is never defined by him-/herself, but by his/her various roles in relation to others around him/her. An etymological investiga- tion explains why the relationship between friends was included in the ‘five cardinal human relationships.’ These roles and relations not only constitute one’s initial condi- tions, but also operate within the grand matrix of heaven-earth-human. Examples of friendship and its various types in classical philosophical and literary texts are ana- lyzed to illustrate the significance of friendship as part of the narratives and moral particularities of Chinese people as well as its long-lasting impact.
