World Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 2012, 2, 89-105 http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/wjnst.2012.23015 Published Online July 2012 (http://www.SciRP.org/journal/wjnst) High-Level Nuclear Wastes and the Environment: Analyses of Challenges and Engineering Strategies Mukhtar Ahmed Rana Physics Division, Directorate of Science, PINSTECH, Islamabad, Pakistan Email: [email protected], [email protected] Received February 11, 2012; revised April 2, 2012; accepted April 19, 2012 ABSTRACT The main objective of this paper is to analyze the current status of high-level nuclear waste disposal along with presen- tation of practical perspectives about the environmental issues involved. Present disposal designs and concepts are ana- lyzed on a scientific basis and modifications to existing designs are proposed from the perspective of environmental safety. A new concept of a chemical heat sink is introduced for the removal of heat emitted due to radioactive decay in the spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste, and thermal spikes produced by radiation in containment materi- als. Mainly, UO2 and metallic U are used as fuels in nuclear reactors. Spent nuclear fuel contains fission products and transuranium elements which would remain radioactive for 104 to 108 years. Essential concepts and engineering strate- gies for spent nuclear fuel disposal are described. Conceptual designs are described and discussed considering the long-term radiation and thermal activity of spent nuclear fuel. Notions of physical and chemical barriers to contain nu- clear waste are highlighted. A timeframe for nuclear waste disposal is proposed and time-line nuclear waste disposal plan or policy is described and discussed.

Abstract In 2009, the Pakistani Supreme Court began granting rights to gender ambiguous people who are locally known as khwaja siras. The Court organized this population into taxonomic groups and ordered the government to ‘mainstream’ them. These actions were based on certain cultural assumptions and occurred amid uncertainties about who khwaja siras really were. Meanwhile, khwaja siras began to mobilize in an effort to control their public image. Based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork on the identity politics of khwaja siras in Karachi, this dissertation seeks to understand the ways in which gender ambiguous people constructed, negotiated and represented themselves both within their social networks and in the wider society, as well as the factors underpinning their public portrayals. I conceive khwaja sira politics as a ‘game’, that is, as the art of manipulation and concealment. I argue that the games of secrecy and deception in which this minority population engaged were responses to the stigma they experienced in everyday life.

MUSEUM COLLECTING AND CONSTRUCTIONS OF IDENTITY IN INDIAN PUNJAB, 1947-1970 Mrinalini Venkateswaran Girton College University of Cambridge September 2020 This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Page 2 of 399 ABSTRACT Museum Collecting and Constructions of Identity in Indian Punjab, 1947-1970 Mrinalini Venkateswaran This thesis takes an original approach to twentieth century south Asian history by linking long established research on partition and postcolonial nation building, with a new domain of enquiry and material: museum historiography and practice. If unpacking colonial museums and collecting practices revealed the workings of colonialism and the colonial state, what can studying postcolonial museums and collecting practices tell us about the nation-state? What sort of national discourse did they generate in these early years, especially when located away from the centre in a region like Indian Punjab? Collecting for a Punjab museum continued throughout the region’s unique experience of changing boundaries and polities from 1947-1966, beginning with partition, and ending with the linguistic reorganisation of states, with a phase of princely federation in between.

Copyright by Nabeeha Zahid Chaudhary 2021 The Dissertation Committee for Nabeeha Zahid Chaudhary Certifies that this is the approved version of the following Dissertation: Beyond the Drama— Developing Entertainment-Education Television Serials in Pakistan Committee: Karin Wilkins, Co-Supervisor Shanti Kumar, Co-Supervisor Joseph Straubhaar Syed Akbar Hyder Jennifer McClearen Beyond the Drama— Developing Entertainment-Education Television Serials in Pakistan by Nabeeha Zahid Chaudhary Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2021 Dedication To my father, Zahid Chaudhary, without whose encouragement and support over the years I never would have gotten this far. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Whenever we set out on our individual journeys—professional or personal—we ultimately make it to the other end because others assist us along the way. Some of this help comes from people we know, and some from strangers in the most unexpected ways. It is impossible to thank everyone who played a part in helping me conceptualize and carry out this project because so much of the support I have gotten over the years has been behind the scenes, so to speak. Before all else, I am grateful to God for making paths appear, for creating ease, and for guiding me along the way. A big thank you to my advisor, Karin Wilkins—I could not have done this without your encouragement, inspiration, and input. By reading your work and taking your class, I found a space for my work and was reminded that it mattered.
