SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

ISSN: 0976-3104 ISSUE: Multidisciplinary Social Science & Management ARTICLE FUNCTIONAL-SEMANTICMUTUAL SUBSTITUTION OF CASES IN THE TURKIC-SPEAKING LITERARY MONUMENTS OF THE GOLDEN HORDE PERIOD Gulnara R. Shakirova*, Gulnaz F. Gaynullina, Liliya M. Giniyatullina, Muslima M. Shakurova, Department of General Management, Kazan Federal University, Leo Tolstoy Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication, Kazan, RUSSIA ABSTRACT The XIIIth – XIVth centuries were played the most important role of the development of the history and culture of Turkic nations and in the formation of the medieval Tatar ethnos. This period in the history of the Turkic literary language is marked, on the one hand, the beginning of kypchakizatsiya language monuments; on the other hand, Tatar literary language of a later period (XV – XVIII centuries) in its traditions goes directly to the literary language of the Golden Horde period that is to the written literary language of XIII – XIV centuries and Turkic-speaking monuments of this period are of direct relevance to the history of the Tatar language. This article attempts to analyze the functional-semantic mutual substitution cases in the Turkiс-speaking literary monuments of the Golden Horde period. And the Turkic-speaking monuments of this period are directly related to the history of the Tatar language. Turkological science has achieved significant success in the linguistic study of Turkish written monuments, which has the great importance both for tracing the evolution of the cultural and historical process of individual nations, and for recreating the history of Turkic languages. Despite this, written monuments of the history of the Tartar literary language of the earlier period (XIII – XIV centuries) have not been studied sufficiently.

Social Change and Marriage Patterns among Koryo Saram in Kazakhstan, 1937–1965* Natalya Yem and Stephen J. Epstein This article considers social forces set in motion when ethnic Koreans of the former Soviet Union (Koryo saram) were deported from the Soviet Far East to Central Asia under Stalin, treating these emerging phenomena as a context for understanding the community’s marriage patterns. Drawing on archival records from 1937 to1965 in Kazakhstan, we show how choice of marriage partner reflects changes in socioeconomic status, places of residence, gender roles and language use. Demographic data about interethnic marriages in Kazakhstan, we argue, serves as a useful tool for exploring relations between Koryo saram and the larger host society; these evolving trends in marriage patterns offer a window into the Korean diaspora experience locally and more broadly. Keywords: Korean diaspora, Koryo saram, interethnic marriage, census, Kazakhstan In recent years, scholars have turned increasing attention to the history of Koreans in the diaspora, outlining distinctive histories and patterns of settlement among Korean-Americans, Korean-Chinese (Joseonjok), Korean- Japanese (Zainichi), and Koreans of the former Soviet Union (Koryo saram) among others.1 With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of * This work was supported in part by the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies International Scholar Exchange Fellowship for the 2011–2012 academic year. 1. However, some more critical observers and academics point to an ongoing relationship of tension between the two forms of identity and between Ka- zakhs and non-Kazakhs in the real world. – The results of a ZOiS survey conducted among Almaty’s multiethnic popu- lation in autumn 2019 show a strong predominance of ethnic self-identi- fication among respondents for the first time; however, civic Kazakhstani identity also resonates so strongly that it is appropriate to refer to the popu- lation’s “multiple identity”. – However, several social and political factors indicate that there are multiple interpretations of the term “Kazakhstani” as well, with considerable differ- ences between Kazakhs and non-Kazakhs here.

  • Beginnings to AD 2000: a Comprehensive Chronology of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Iran
The Beginnings Beginnings to AD 2000: A Comprehensive Chronology of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Iran by Iraj Bashiri copyright 2001 The Beginnings Ancient beliefs in the region divide humanity's passage on earth into three cosmic, myhtic, and historical periods. Of the three, of course, only the third or the historical period is real. The other two have cosmological and mytheological values that enhance our understanding of the present-day peoples of the region. One day elemnets of the mythic period might prove to be real but for that we need more solid documentation than is available at the present. For the purposes of this comprehensive chronology of the region, the cosmic and mythic periods are presented in the sequential order preserved in ancient chronologies. No attempt is made at correlating those eras in any form with historical or real time. The Cosmic and Mythic Eras The initial 3000-year battle between the forces of Ahura Mazda (Good) and Angra Mainyu (Evil) leads to the defeat of the latter. The second cycle of 3000 years begins with Ahura Mazda's creation of the cosmic world, i.e., the creation of the sky, water, earth, plants, the sacred white bull, and the cosmic man (Gayomart). Truth, symbolized as fire, permeates Ahura Mazda's kingdom. file:///Volumes/BASHIRISCOM/CHRON/CosMyth.html (1 of 6)10/2/08 1:00 PM The Beginnings Creation continues with Ahura Mazda's creation of the Amesha Spentas or Holy Immortals. As Vice-Regents, the immortals serve as "governors" or administrators of the various realms of Ahura Mazda's Kingdom.

  • (Eds.) Language and Their Religion
In this book, scholars from disciplines like anthropology, history, linguistics and philology engage with the subject of how Koreans who live outside Korea had to (re-)define their own distinct cultural life in a foreign environment. Most Koreans in the diaspora define themselves through their ancestry, their Johannes Reckel and Merle Schatz (Eds.) language and their religion. Language serves as a strong argument for defining one´s own identity within a multi ethnic society. Ethnic Koreans in the diaspora tend to cultivate their own very special dialects. However, since the fall of the Soviet Union and the opening of China, most ethnic Koreans in Korean Diaspora - Central Asia, Central Asia, Manchuria and Siberia came again into close contact with Koreans especially from South Korea. There is a certain desire amongst many ethnic Koreans to learn the standard Korean language Siberia and Beyond instead of sticking to their own dialects.
